London Zoo's participation in an international network for the conservation of endangered species, through captive breeding, played a large part in the zoo's survival. One success has been the golden lion tamarin - a monkey indigenous to the forests of Brazil - whose numbers in the wild had been decimated to the point of extinction. Over 50 of this species are born in zoos around the world each year and more than 100 have been released into a protected area in Brazil.
