In 1992 Zimbabwe's Department of National Parks and Wildlife Management received evidence that the country's black rhino population numbered 400. Just the year before, it had been estimated at 2,000. Conservationists in the field saw the news as a major catastrophe for animal conservation the whole world over. If an animal that attracts millions of dollars in donations cannot be saved, the prospects are extremely bleak for many other less publicised species.
