London Zoo, home of this gorilla, was originally opened in 1826 and rescued from closure in 1993. The human desire to gawp at the animal kingdom is ancient, visible in cave paintings, King Solomon's private menagerie and the Chinese Emperor's marble deer house built in 1150 BC.
