Whale meat on sale in Tsukiji Wholesale Fish Market, Tokyo. In 1900 there was an estimated world population of 195,000 blue whales. By the 1930s they were being killed at the rate of 30,000 a year, and today the world stock is reduced to near extinction: 6,000 animals all told.
