  1. In 1989 over 1,000 people turned up in Trafalgar Square to demonstrate against the continuing slaughter of animals for the fur trade. The decline of the fur trade - once one of Britain's most prestigious businesses - was brought about by similar anti-fur campaigns and a change in fashion.
