Most PCs come with two expansion cards already fitted: the display controller and the sound card. Once an expansion card is fitted, its input and output connectors are accessible from the back of the system unit. Typical add-ons that require expansion cards to be fitted include scanners, TV tuners and backup devices such as tapes and removable hard disks. Most PCs have several free expansion slots.
