- Rather different from the other guides here is Johansens Recommended Inns with Restaurants. This is a
- large, glossy book, priced around ú10 (also available on a CD-ROM including companion Hotel and Country
- House guides at ú30). Johansens was recently unfavourably mentioned on BBC TV's Watchdog along with
- another of other hotel guides that charge the featured businesses a hefty chunk of cash to appear. It was
- suggested that only limited effort is put into ensuring that the entries are impartial, effectively making it a large
- advertising supplement. Despite this, I have found Johansens to be reliable, and though it has no information on
- beer, it does give a clear feel for the atmosphere of a pub in full page entries that include good colour
- photographs. Directions are good, but details of food often tend to
- the flowery rather than the specific.
