  1.            Installing "What PC? Pages" on your Psion 3a
  2.        
  3.        Please read all of this section, before proceeding.
  4.  
  5. This product contains 3 sections from the What PC? magazine's Buyer's Guide, 
  6. being Desktop PCs, Portables and Printers.  Additional sections will be 
  7. added during 1996.  The CD-ROM also contains demonstration versions of 
  8. Expotel Pages and Transmedia Pages.  Expotel Pages includes a worldwide hotel 
  9. directory and offers preferential rates to Psion users booking through its 
  10. service.  Expotel book in excess of 1 million room nights per year.  
  11. Transmedia Pages contains directories of restaurants in the United Kingdom 
  12. and in Australia, which participate in the "Transmedia - The restaurant card 
  13. programme.  Transmedia have over half a million members, who enjoy 25% 
  14. savings on food and beverage at over 6,000 restaurants, worldwide.  Complete 
  15. the form contained in the file apply.txt and return it to Transmedia UK.  
  16. Psion members receive 6 weekly, diskette based directory updates, and, for a 
  17. limited period, also receive 6 months free subscription to Transmedia's 
  18. restaurant card.  You can copy any permutation of the supplied databases to 
  19. your Psion Series 3a, depending on your personal requirements and the storage 
  20. space you have available.  The databases, and their approximate sizes are 
  21. summarised below :

  30. Connect the Psion 3Link serial cable between the PC and your Psion 3a.  
  31. On the Psion, from the System screen, use Psion-l to set 'Remote link'  
  32. to 'On' and ensure the 'Baud rate' is set correctly.

  34. The installation procedure differs considerably depending on whether you 
  35. will use the DOS based RCOM or MCLINK programs supplied with earlier 
  36. versions of the Psion Serial Link, or whether you use Windows based PsiWin. 
  37.  
  38.      Go to SECTION 1, if you will use MCLINK or RCOM,       
  39.                   or       
  40.      Go to SECTION 2, if you will use PsiWin (or are a MAC user)
  41.  
  42. 1) Installation procedure  (Using RCOM or MCLINK)
  43. -------------------------------------------------
  44. On the PC, start RCOM or MCLINK.  If you are installing What PC? Pages from 
  45. a CD-ROM, or from your hard disk you should have selected the base directory 
  46. What PC? Pages is found in.  You can easily identify this directory, as it 
  47. will contain this 'readme.1st' file and the file 'pages.ini'.

  49. Upgrading from an earlier software revision - Delete the file 
  50.     \app\pages\mp_pages.opo on your Psion.  Then continue with the next step.
  51.  
  52. Copying the software - Copy the file pagesmgr.opa from your PC to any \app 
  53. directory on your Psion.  Use Psion-i on the Psion to install the PAGESmgr 
  54. program. Enter PAGESmgr on the Psion.  After you've answered a few simple 
  55. questions about which PC device you want to load from and which Psion device 
  56. to load to,  PAGESmgr will check there's enough space on the Psion device you 
  57. specified, and then copy the files to your Psion.
  58.  
  59. Copying the database(s) - PAGESmgr will ask you if you want to load a 
  60. database from the PC.  Answering "Y" (for YES) will present you with a menu 
  61. of databases available on the PC.  Select a database, answer a few simple 
  62. questions, and the database will be copied to the Psion.  You can repeat this 
  63. step for every database you want to download.  You can repeat it at any time 
  64. in the future, by simply entering PAGESmgr and selecting the appropriate 
  65. option.

  67. Exit PAGESmgr and use Psion-i to install PAGESi.opa on your Psion.  
  68. The PAGESi icon will then appear on the screen.  Pressing 'Enter' on the 
  69. PAGESi icon will take you into 'What PC? Pages', allowing you to access, 
  70. search and view the databases you have just downloaded.  
  71.    
  72. You will see that with the software now fully loaded, if you re-enter 
  73. PAGESmgr, you will be presented with a new menu.  You will only need to use 
  74. these options if, in the future, you want to download new software revisions 
  75. and/or databases.  Such advanced use is documented in the file readme.2nd.

  77. 2) Installation procedure  (Using PsiWin or the MAC's Psion Link)
  78. -----------------------------------------------------------------
  79. This procedure assumes you know how to use standard Windows "drag & drop" 
  80. techniques.

  82. Copying the software - Copy the 2 files in the \app directory to a \app 
  83. directory on any device on your Psion 3a and then copy all files in the 
  84. \app\pages directory that start with the 3 characters 'mp_' to a 
  85. \app\pages directory on the same device on your Psion.  You will have to 
  86. manually create the \app\pages directory on your Psion, if it doesn't exist.

  88. Copying the database(s) - For each database you want to copy to your Psion, 
  89. copy all files beginning with its 3 letter database code, (eg wpd ... see 
  90. Introduction section) from the \app\pages directory on the diskette, to a 
  91. \app\pages directory on any device on your Psion.

  93. Installing the software & database(s) - Use Psion-i to install the PAGESmgr 
  94. and PAGESi icons on the System screen.  Enter PAGESmgr and select 'Database 
  95. Install/Remove'.  Having selected the Install button, for each database you 
  96. copied to your Psion, enter the 3 letter database code (e.g.: wpd) to make 
  97. the databases active.  Exit PAGESmgr.  You will only need to use PAGESmgr 
  98. again if, in the future, you want to download new software revisions and/or 
  99. databases.  Such advanced use is documented in the file 'readme.2nd'.

  101. Press 'Enter' on the PAGESi icon, which will take you into 'What PC? Pages', 
  102. allowing to access, search and view the databases you have just downloaded.

  105. 3. Terms & Conditions of Use
  106.    -------------------------
  107. a. Great care has been taken throughout this product to be accurate.  However,
  108.    recognising that the information has been provided by a Third Party 
  109.    company, Mobile Software Ltd cannot accept responsibility for any errors 
  110.    or their consequences.

  131. b. Create your own "Mobile Pages" database
  132.    o "Pages Generator" is the PC based database generation package, used to
  133.      create relational, compressed databases, to be accessed on the Psion 3a
  134.      by our "Pages Viewer" software.
  135.    o "Pages Generator" can import information from virtually any corporate
  136.      database, via comma or tab separated text files, and as such,
  137.      is independent of the source database or application.

  140. 5. Other
  141.    -----
  142. a. The software supplied on this CD-ROM is the latest version available
  143.    and supercedes any previous releases.
  144.    
  145. b. Mobile Pages will always create small parameter files in the directory
  146.    m:\app\pages.  It will create this directory if it does not exist.
  147.  
  148. c. The file "pages.ini", stores information about databases held on the 
  149.    diskette, including their names and storage space requirements.  It is 
  150.    used as a part of the PAGESmgr based installation process described above 
  151.    and does not need to be copied to the Psion.

  153. d. Contrary to general expectation, very often, searches on the database
  154.    will get increasingly faster when you add more menu based search criteria,
  155.    ie items that, having been selected, are displayed in the top row of
  156.    the search criteria screen.  This position is only true when you have 
  157.    the multiple types option set to ALL, ie all of the selected criteria 
  158.    must be true.  The opposite happens when it is selected to ANY!
