They were stored by bronze-founder Hebrard who, between 1919-1922 made casts from 73 of them. Amongst these was an important group of 17 horse subjects - racing, galloping, trotting and rearing. Degas had sculpted in clay and wax between 1865-1912. He was largely self-taught, receiving some help and advice from his sculptor friends Cuvelier and Bartholomé.
