-
- 1. GENERAL NOTES
- ----------------
- There are 2 main concepts of creating a CD backup:
- 1.1 on a CD-R(W) media
- 1.2 on a hard disk or network drive
-
-
- 1.1 BACKUP TO CD-R(W):
- ----------------------
- You should know that it's not always possible to create a working copy on a
- CD-R(W). Your success depends on the CD protection, used CD Writer and burning
- software as well as many other factors (please visit our homepage for more
- information on how to copy protected CDs). In most cases the main problem is the
- CD writer as it cannot be replaced or updated so easily. This is one of the
- reasons why DAEMON Tools was created. One of our program's features is the
- emulation of most CD protection schemes. DAEMON Tools emulates the data
- (e.g. subchannel, unreadable sectors) your CD writer might not be able to write
- to a copy. Currently the following protections are emulated:
- Safedisc, Securom and Laserlock.
- These protections are emulated on HARDWARE level - nothing will be changed in
- the protected software. DAEMON Tools is NOT a crack/patch!! Anyway your backup
- (must be a '1:1 backup' - read our homepage for detailed explanation) will work
- like the original.
-
-
- 1.2 BACKUP TO HD OR NETWORK:
- ----------------------------
- Another feature of DAEMON Tools is the virtual PHANTOM CDROM driver, allowing
- the use of previously created CD images (on local hard disk or network drives)
- as they were physical CDs. During DAEMON Tools installation a new CDROM device
- is installed in your system - the virtual 'PHANTOM CDROM drive'.
- Currently almost any protected CD can be emulated! Protections like
- Safedisc (TM) v1 & v2, Securom (TM), Laserlock (TM), Lockblocks (TM) and many
- others are 'helpless' if the image was created correctly. Plz notice that the
- protection emulation mentioned in 1.1 is not needed if you run a program from an
- image mounted with DAEMON Tools' virtual PHANTOM CDROM. It can stay disabled in
- DAEMON Tools' menu.
- It's up to you to decide which way you choose to copy your protected CDROMs, but
- the first step is always to create an exact image of your original CD. DAEMON
- Tools currently doesn't contain it's own dumping engine to create CD images - it
- uses the images of many popular burning programs (like e.g. CloneCD, Blindwrite,
- DiscDump, CDRWin and others). And this is one of DAEMON Tools' biggest
- advantages - you can immediately mount a created image of your CD as a virtual
- CDROM! No additional conversion is needed. Just install and run the application
- from the image mounted to DAEMON Tools' virtual PHANTOM CDROM! This way you can
- also test your CD image(s) and verify if it was created correctly before burning
- it. It is even possible to create an image from a mounted image using any of the
- mentioned burning programs; e.g. if you want to create the image with burning
- program A but burn the image with burning program B - no conversion tool needed
- anymore! This image interchangeability between burning programs and
- 'PHANTOM CDROM' makes DAEMON Tools very convenient in use and a logical
- supplement to burning programs.
-
- The most suitable programs for making correct images are:
- Blindwrite (http://www.blindwrite.com)
- CDRWIN (http://www.goldenhawk.com)
- CloneCD (http://www.elby.de)
- DiscDump (http://come.to/ddump)
- DiscJuggler (http://www.padus.com)
-
- CD Images created by these programs are directly supported by DAEMON Tools.
- Exact copy instructions for these programs can be found on our homepage at
- http://www.daemon-tools.com.
-
- If you're not going to use a 'pure' CD Copy Program like e.g. CloneCD or Blind-
- write you must make sure you created a 1:1 copy (sector copy) from the original
- CD or the copy protection emulation of DAEMON Tools will not work.
- The same applies to images you may want to use with DAEMON Tools' virtual
- PHANTOM CDROM - these images must be created the same way or the application may
- not run if the original CD was protected.
- DO NOT simply copy files and folders from the original CD to the destination CD
- in your burning program (or even worse in Windows explorer; if you have a UDF
- driver like DirectCD, PacketCD or InCD installed)! Your application most likely
- won't run if the original CD was copy protected!
- Please visit our homepage and click on '1:1 copy' in the header if you are
- unsure how to create a correct 1:1 copy/image. You'll find a detailed descrip-
- tion there.
-
-
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 2. INSTALLATION
- ---------------
-
-
- 2.1 Windows 95/98/ME:
- ---------------------
- To run DAEMON Tools setup in Windows 95 you MUST have at least Win 95B with
- installed USB supplement, Year 2K Patch and/or Internet Explorer 4 or higher!
- It is highly recommended you install IE 5 as it isn't only a browser but
- updates A LOT of system files. It is either required for full Y2K compatibility
- of Win95. You may deinstall IE again if you don't want to use it - the system
- update remains!
-
- The installation of DAEMON Tools v2.60 and higher requires the latest version of
- Windows Installer (MSI). It is the latest MS installation technology and already
- integrated in Windows ME but also available as upgrade for Win 9x.
- The DAEMON Tools setup will automatically offer to download the latest version
- for you if it isn't found on your system.
- Alternatively you can download Windows Installer for 9x from the following
- location:
-
- Version for all languages (1513 KB):
-
- Anyway we recommend to just run DAEMON Tools setup as several newer programs
- (e.g. Office 2000, Disc Juggler 3.x) automatically install Windows Installer so
- you may already have it installed.
-
- Update:
- -------
- Mostly like 'New Install' below. Plz select 'Update/Repair DAEMON Tools' during
- installation. A reboot after install is ALWAYS necessary. All settings from
- previously installed versions are kept.
-
- New Install:
- ------------
- Unzip the DAEMON Tools archive (daemon*.zip) to any temporary folder and run
- 'setup.exe'. All necessary files will be copied and two new devices will be
- installed in your system, the "Virtual DAEMON SCSI Controller" and the
- "V386 PHANTOM CDROM". After setup has finished the 'DAEMON Tools' shortcut is
- placed on your desktop and the DAEMON manager icon will appear in the notifi-
- cation area of your taskbar. Right-click on it to see the popup menu. The
- 'DAEMON Manager' allows you to enable or disable Safedisc, Securom and Laserlock
- emulation. It is also used to mount and unmount images to DAEMON Tools' virtual
- PHANTOM CDROM drive, to set the number of how many PHANTOM CDROMs will be
- installed (the number can be '0' to '4') and to set several other options.
- Moreover you use it to access help menu. A left-click on the icon allows the
- quick mounting/dismounting of images. Directly after installation Windows
- assigns the next free drive letter to the newly installed PHANTOM CDROM drive
- but after the next reboot Windows automatically puts it in first place giving
- it the lowest drive letter of your current CDROM drive(s). This behaviour is
- common for ALL SCSI CDROM drives newly installed to your system, no matter if it
- is a virtual or physical drive. This behaviour is NOT special for DAEMON Tools.
- Anyway if you want to keep your old CDROM drive letter(s) go to
-
- "Start" --> "Settings" --> "ControlPanel" --> "System" --> "DeviceManager"
- --> "CDROM"
-
- then select "V386 PHANTOM CDROM" and click on "Properties". Select "Settings" in
- the window coming up and set "Reserved Drive Letters" (First AND Last) to the
- desired value (must be HIGHER than ALL letters used at the moment!!!). We
- suggest using "V" = Virtual.
-
- 2.2 Windows NT:
- ---------------
-
- The installation of DAEMON Tools v2.60 and higher requires the latest version of
- Windows Installer (MSI). It is the latest MS installation technology and
- available as upgrade for Win NT.
- The DAEMON Tools setup will automatically offer to download the latest version
- for you if it isn't found on your system.
- Alternatively you can download Windows Installer for NT from the following
- location:
-
- Version for all languages (1526 KB):
-
- Anyway we recommend to just run DAEMON Tools setup as several newer programs
You will be asked to reboot for changes to take effect.
- After reboot the DAEMON manager icon will appear in the notification area of
- your taskbar. Right-click on it to see the popup menu. The 'DAEMON Manager'
- allows you to enable or disable Safedisc, Securom and Laserlock emulation. It
- is also used to mount and unmount images to DAEMON Tools' virtual PHANTOM CDROM
- drive, to set the number of how many PHANTOM CDROMs will be installed (the
- number can be '0' to '4') and to set several other options. Moreover you use it
- to access help menu. A left-click on the icon allows the quick
- mounting/dismounting of images. When the installation has finished and your
- system has rebooted you'll notice that Windows has assigned the drive letter of
- your first CDROM drive to the newly installed PHANTOM CDROM drive. This
- behaviour is common for ALL SCSI CDROM drives newly installed to your system, no
- matter if it is a virtual or physical drive. This behaviour is NOT special for
- DAEMON Tools. Anyway if you want to keep your old CDROM drive letter(s) make
- sure you're logged in with administrative privileges and then go to
-
- "Start"-->"Programs"-->"Administrative Tools (Common)"-->"Disk Administrator".
-
- Right click on the CDROM drive you want to change and select "Assign Drive
- Letter". The selected drive letter will be assigned immediately.
-
- Note: You can activate DAEMON manager after install even without reboot, but
- Windows NT will assign drive letter for new CDROM ('PHANTOM CDROM') after
- reboot only. If it does not bother you, you can use all emulation features
- immediately without reboot.
-
-
- 2.3 Windows 2000:
- -----------------
-
- Update:
- -------
- Mostly like 'New Install' below.
After setup has finished the 'DAEMON Tools' shortcut is
- placed on your desktop and the DAEMON manager icon will appear in the
- notification area of your taskbar.
This behaviour is
- common for ALL SCSI CDROM drives newly installed to your system, no matter if
- it is a virtual or physical drive. This behaviour is NOT special for DAEMON
- Tools. Anyway if you want to keep your old CDROM drive letter(s) make sure
- you're logged in with administrative privileges and then go to
-
- "Start"-->"Programs"-->"Administrative Tools"-->"Computer Management"
-
- and open "Storage"-->"Disk Management" folder. Right-click on the CDROM device
- you want to change and select "Change Drive Letter And Path...".
-
- Since version 2.2 DAEMON Tools is compatible with Win 2K's "hibernation" and
- "standby" modes!
-
-
- 2.4 Note for ALL operating systems:
- -----------------------------------
- Virtual DAEMON Manager starts with Windows by default. You can disable this
- behaviour in the DAEMON manager's 'Options' menu by unchecking 'Autostart'! You
- can (re-)start the manager manually using the 'DAEMON Tools' shortcut placed on
- your desktop during setup. The protection emulation will not be active until you
- enable one or more of them in DAEMON manager's 'Emulation' menu. The DAEMON
- manager icon will turn green to signalize that one or more emulations are
- active. The protection emulations work for all your CDROM drives.
- After reboot previously mounted Images are remounted if 'Autostart' in 'Options'
- menu is enabled. Virtual drives are remounted already before manager loads and
- can be used with programs that access CDROM even before your Desktop is
- fully initialized.
- If you want to have emulation(s) automatically activated after boot up but do not
- want to see the DAEMON manager tray icon for some reason disable the 'Taskbar icon'
- option. To start the DAEMON manager manually use the 'DAEMON Tools' desktop icon.
- Since version 2.2 it is possible to disable ALL virtual PHANTOM CDROM drives.
- To do so right-click the DAEMON Manager icon and select
- "Virtual CDROM" --> "Select number of devices..." --> "Disable.
- In Windows NT you will have to reboot to see the effect.
-
- Note for Windows NT/2000/XP:
- ----------------------------
- Automatic remounting of network images after reboot requires user login and can
- be performed only when 'Virtual DAEMON Manager' starts. If you have Windows
- 'Autoinsert Notification' (AIN) enabled the automatically remounted images will
- 'Autorun' as the mounting of an image is nothing else as putting a physical CD
- to a CDROM drive.
-
-
- 2.5 Uninstalling DAEMON Tools:
- ------------------------------
- To uninstall DAEMON Tools go to
-
- "Start" --> "Settings" --> "ControlPanel" --> "Software"
-
- and select 'DAEMON Tools'. DAEMON Tools will be completely removed from your PC.
-
- Windows NT may require a reboot to completely uninstall the drivers. In Windows
- 9x/ME/2000 all drivers are removed from the system immediately. If you reinstall
- DAEMON Tools directly after Uninstall a reboot may be required to completely
- remove the previously uninstalled drivers.
-
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 3. USAGE
- --------
-
- 3.1 DAEMON Manager:
- -------------------
- DAEMON Tools is very easy to use. By default it's started during bootup (you
- can disable this behaviour by deselecting "Autostart" in DAEMON Manager
- "Options" (right-click the DAEMON icon in your systray).
- If you want to run an unperfect (missing unreadable sectors or subchannel data)
- 1:1 copy of a copy-protected original CD (see our homepage under '1:1 copy' if
- you're unsure what a '1:1 copy' really is) enable the correct protection
- emulation in DAEMON manager. Right click the tray icon and select the desired
- protection in the 'Emulation' menu. Our homepage can help you to identify the
- copy protection used on your original CD. Go there and select 'Instructionz' in
- the left frame of the DAEMONs Home.
-
-
- 3.2 PHANTOM CDROM:
- ------------------
- To use DAEMON Tools' virtual "PHANTOM CDROM" drive you must first create an
- image of a CD. You can use any burning program creating CUE-sheets (e.g.
- DiscDump, Blindread or CDRWin), CloneCD (creating .ccd files), Blindread
- (creating .BWT files) or simply mount any standard ISO image.
- The correct settings for the mentioned burning programs can be found on our
- homepage under 'Instructionz'. After having created an image just right-click
- the DAEMON Manager icon, select
-
- "Virtual CDROM" --> "Device X" --> "Mount Image"
- (where "X" stands for the number of your PHANTOM CDROM)
-
- and select the CUE-Sheet, CCD-File, BWT-File, CDI-File or ISO you created
- before. This is like putting a new CD in your CDROM drive. To check if the
- image is mounted properly start "My Computer" and press "F5". Now the label of
- the mounted CD should be shown as drive "V" (or whatever drive letter you
- chose for PHANTOM CDROM). Now you can use PHANTOM CDROM like every other CDROM
- drive. To change "CD" (image) do like explained above but just select a
- different image! Please note that the protection emulations are NOT needed for
- images mounted to a 'PHANTOM CDROM'. If the image was created correctly nearly
- every protected CD will run without ANY modification. Of course every
- unprotected CD will work, too.
-
-
- 3.3 Audio CDs:
- --------------
- Mixed Mode and Audio CDs are supported but to hear sound you must have a
- WDM-compatible soundcard driver and enable "Digital CD Audio" for the
- PHANTOM CDROM.
-
- In Win 9x/ME go to
- "Start" --> "Settings" --> "ControlPanel" --> "Multimedia" --> "CD Music".
- In Win 2K just right-click any drive in explorer and select "Hardware" tab
- under "Properties". Now select V386 PHANTOM CDROM and click the "Properties"
- button. In the next window select "Properties" tab.
-
- Now you can enable 'Digital CD audio'. If the "Digital CD-Audio"-setting is
- greyed out your soundcard driver is not WDM-compatible. This not too big a
- problem - you just won't hear the Audio Tracks!
-
-
- 3.4 Changing number of Virtual CDROMs:
- --------------------------------------
- By default one virtual PHANTOM CDROM drive is present in your system. However
- you can change the number of drives in DAEMON Manager's "Virtual CDROM" menu.
- Select "Set number of devices..." and select the desired number of virtual
- drives. If you choose "Disable" all PHANTOM CDROM drives will be removed!
- The virtual drives are connected/disconnected immediately.
- Windows NT ALWAYS needs a reboot to show the change of drives.
-
- Plz note that refresh/reboot is NOT NECESSARY to access the drives. You can
- mount images to the new drive(s) immediately after adding them and applications
- or games will find the CD if they try to read it. Refresh/reboot may only be
- necessary to have the new drive(s) shown in Windows Explorer or any other file
- manager. Some ASPI managers may also not recognize new CDROM without reboot.
-
- DAEMON Tools automatically remembers all your settings in registry and also
- remounts images to 'their' virtual drive after reboot.
- If you have images on a network drive the connection must be restored first,
- of course, to successfully remount image.
- If you do not like this behaviour you can turn the 'Automount' option off.
-
-
- 3.5 Command-line switches:
- --------------------------
-
- The following parameters can be used to create batch files or shortcuts to
- automatically mount an image when an application is started:
-
- -lock - used to lock the DLL operation to be sure no unauthorized
- program can load daemon.dll and use its functions. Used mainly
- in autostart (if 'Autolock' option is enabled), but can be used
- in command line too. Unlocking can be done from Virtual DAEMON
- manager or other GUI that is currently running. Note that
- locking has no effect on DAEMON Manager itself or other programs
- which have been 'authorized' by us to use the DLL.
- -noicon - this option is used to prevent DAEMON Tools from creating a
- taskbar icon. It has no effect if DAEMON manager is already
- running or you specified another command (except 'lock') in the
- command line! DAEMON manager automatically exits after command
- is executed and does not create taskbar icon.
- -mount - allows mounting images from command line (or shortcut).
- Syntax is: -mount <n>,<path>
- where 'n' means PHANTOM device number ('0' - '3' allowed)
- and 'path' is the full path to the image file. Example:
- daemon.exe -mount 0,"c:\My Images\nameofimage.cue".
- Do not forget to set the path in quotes if it contains spaces!
- -unmount - allows unmounting images from command line.
- Syntax is: -unmount <n>
- where 'n' means PHANTOM device number ('0' - '3' allowed).
- -safedisc - allows turning Safedisc emulation on/off from command line.
- '-safedisc on' enables emulation, '-safedisc off' disables it.
- -securom - allows turning Securom emulation on/off from command line.
- '-securom on' enables emulation, '-securom off' disables it.
- -laserlok - allows turning Laserlock emulation on/off from command line.
- '-laserlok on' enables emulation, '-laserlok off' disables it.
-
- All command line options can be combined.
-
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 4. PROBLEMS
- -----------
-
- We are working hard to eliminate all problems you may have.
- At last this emulator works in global mode like Pedro's good old Generic
- Safedisc Patch as many people complained about the shortcut and command line
- fiddling of our earlier 'Generic Safedisc Emulator'. And decision was made to
- put emulation on a new basis. Now it starts with Windows as kernel SCSI miniport
- driver and handles all I/O requests required for emulation on the system level.
-
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 5. KNOWN ISSUES
- ---------------
-
- - Analog CD Audio functions do not work - they are emulated only. It means
- you won't hear any sound from CD audio tracks. Try to enable the 'Digital
- CD Audio' setting if you have a WDM-compatible soundcard driver (see 3.3 in
- this manual. Analog CD Audio feature will be added soon.
-
- - System crash with Nero in some configurations where blank CD-R is inserted
- into your writer and one of the copy protection emulations is enabled. We are
- investigating the cause but could not reproduce it on our computers, so we
- would be thankful if somebody having this problem could describe his full
- configuration and running software.
-
- - Crash during installation on some 9x systems having Nero installed.
- The crash may be caused by nerocd95.vxd module when new devices are added to
- system. To solve this issue rename/remove this module (in SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS)
- temporarily, reboot and install Daemon Tools. Then you can rename/restore
- it nerocd95.vxd.
- Updated version on nerocd95.vxd will be soon available on Ahead site.
-
- - System lockup after image is mounted and accessed or after reboot with
- 'Automount' option enabled. This appears to happen only on some systems if
- you replaced the default hard disk controller busmaster drivers installed by
- Windows with an updated version from the chipset manufacturer.
- This issue has been fixed in all official versions of Daemon Tools after
- 2.80. Nevetheless please inform us if you still have such problem.
- Current solutions: Reinstall the drivers coming with your Windows
- version.
-
- - System crashes and/or blue screen of death on some systems having (or had)
- Adaptec (Roxio) EasyCD installed. Older versions of this burning program are
- known to cause lots of trouble in combination with other burning soft or
- DAEMON Tools. As EasyCD cannot create working copies or images of protected
- CDs we do not recommend to install it. However newer versions (4.2x and
- higher) seem to be less incompatible. Anyway these versions are still not able
- to create 'good' images or even copies.
- If you encounter problems and have or had EasyCD installed plz note that a
- standard uninstall of EasyCD DOES NOT solve your problems as some drivers of
- EasyCD are not deinstalled and still loaded when booting your system.
- The easiest way to remove or disable these drivers is to use the (very good)
- audio CD burning program 'Feurio' (www.feurio.com). This program runs a system
- check after installation (can also be started manually by selecting 'Extras'
- --> 'System Check') pointing to all potential 'trouble-makers' on your system
- allowing to disable/remove them.
-
-
