  6. ABOUT ICON HEAVEN
  7.  
  8. Icon Heaven is a Workplace Shell enhancement that simplifies
  9. the task of keeping icon libraries on your disk and assigning icons to
  10. objects. 
  11.  
  12. INSTALLATION
  13.  
  14. Simply unzip this file (FIH.ZIP) into an empty directory and double click 
  15. on the install.cmd object, or, in an OS/2 command session, type 
  16. install+<ENTER>.
  17. The installation procedure will ask you for a directory where 
  18. Icon Heaven should be installed. After selecting a directory, 
  19. the installation procedure will copy all the necessary files to 
  20. that directory and create a number of Workplace Shell objects. 
  21. After the installation terminates, Icon Heaven will be available 
  22. in a folder on the desktop. You can move this folder from
  23. the desktop to any other folder if you wish.
  24.  
  25. The installation procedure can clean up after itself when terminating.
  26. So the directory used to run the installation from will be empty. You 
  27. only have to save the Zip file if you want to do a re-install later.
  28.  
  29. DE-INSTALLATION
  30.  
  31. If, perchance, you really don't like Icon Heaven, you can easily remove it 
  32. from your system. The installation procedure will install a de-install
  33. object in the Icon Heaven folder. Simply double-click on it and answer
  34. the obligatory queries on whether you are absolutely sure you know what
  35. you are doing and Icon Heaven will be removed. During de-install, you can
  36. ignore the dialog box that asks you to confirm closing the de-install
  37. session, it will close by itself anyway.
  38. De-install should be performed after a reboot, before any Icon Folder
  39. is opened. An open Icon Folder cannot be correctly removed by de-install.

  41. THE APPLICATION
  42.  
  43. Icon Heaven uses a special type of folder, called an Icon Folder, 
  44. to store icons. These icons are not physically stored on disk where 
  45. they would take up far too much diskspace for the occasional time 
  46. you need them. Instead Icon Heaven stores icons in special 
  47. compressed libraries and only expands those when they are
  48. accessed. This reduces the storage cost of an icon to a mere 
  49. 7% of the space needed when using normal icons. (On a FAT disk)
  50.  
  51. LIBRARIES INCLUDED
  52.  
  53. This package includes a set of five icon libraries. They are:
  54.     - Wordprocessing icons
  55.     - Datacomm icons
  56.     - Games icons
  57.     - Compiler icons
  58.     - Utility icons
  59.  
  60. A separate set of libraries is available for download from the OS2BVEN forum
  61. on CompuServe. This is a big set containing some 2300 converted
  62. Windows icons. There is no need to download these if you already 
  63. have those as they've been roaming the nets for quite some time now.

  66. ASSIGNING ICONS
  67.  
  68. Icon Heaven also simplifies assigning icons to objects. Instead of having 
  69. to open the settings for an object and dragging the appropriate icon to 
  70. the General page, icons are assigned by dragging the object to the icon. 
  71. A simple one step operation.
  72.  
  73. MANAGING ICON LIBRARIES
  74.  
  75. Icon Heaven does not restrict you to using the icon libraries provided 
  76. with the software. You can easily expand the libraries provided or 
  77. create your own. This is done using normal Workplace actions, by 
  78. dragging a new Icon Folder from the Templates folder or by selecting 
  79. 'Create another' from the popup menu of an existing Icon Folder. Then 
  80. you can 'connect' the folder to a library by opening the settings and 
  81. specifying the name of a new iconlibrary (for instance: 
  82. 'C:\IHeaven\MyIcons.FIM').

  84. Now that you've created the library, you can open it and add icons to it.
  85. Adding icons to a library is simply a process of dragging Workplace objects
  86. to the folder (they don't have to be icon files). This will populate the
  87. folder and the library.

  89. THE ICONLIB TOOL
  90.  
  91. Also included is a small library manager called iconlib.exe. It allows you
  92. to list the contents of an icon library, pretty up the names of the icons,
  93. add new icons (icon files only) and set the folder name. This tool is useful 
  94. when you have big directories full of icons and you want to convert them
  95. into Icon Heaven libraries, just type:
  96.  
  97.     iconlib c:\IHeaven\cool.FIM c:\icons\cool\*.ico
  98.  
  99. and all the icons in the cool directory will be added to a Icon Heaven 
  100. library named cool.FIM.
  101. The iconlib tool also has a few other features. For an online help of
  102. the switches supported, just run iconlib without any parameters.

  104. REGISTERING
  105.  
  106. Icon Heaven is shareware. You are granted a 30 day trial period to see if you like
  107. the software. Feel free to pass it on to friends, neighbours and colleages...
  108. If you like Icon Heaven, please register it, support the shareware concept.

  110. Icon Heaven costs only $10. This is for a single OS/2 system lifetime licence 
  111. including any and all future updates to the product.

  126. The actual amount debited from your credit card will be slightly higher
  127. than $10, because of fluctuations in international currency rates. Payment 
  128. will  be done in dutch guilders, FL 20,- (about $11.50 at the time I write 
  129. this, the dollar isn't in very good shape right now)

  131. Users in the Netherlands can also register by transferring HFL 23,50 to
  132. bank account 45.17.71.214, tnv Van Keep Software BV.
  133. This price includes Dutch VAT.

  135. On CompuServe you can also register through the Shareware Registration
  136. Database. To access the database, use GO SWREG and select 'Register
  137. Shareware'. The registration ID for Icon Heaven is: 2983. The price
  138. for registering Icon Heaven through CompuServe is $13.50, due to the
  139. high fee CIS claims for handling registrations.

  141. Registering will get rid of (some of) the troubles with your conscience as
  142. well as the annoying popup of the about dialog the first time you
  143. open an Icon Folder after a reboot. 
  144. No other limitations are present that force you to register.

  176. PLANNED ENHANCEMENTS
  177.  
  178. The next version of Icon Heaven will support renaming of icons (You can 
  179. rename them now, but the changes won't be saved).
  180. I also want to add the possibility of editing icons by invoking the
  181. icon editor on a double-click, like normal icons.

  185. KNOWN PROBLEMS
  186.  
  187. Alas, once again no software without known problems. It appears that a 
  188. bug in the ATI Mach32 video drivers surfaces when Icon Heaven is used.
  189. This results in the Workplace Shell trapping.
  190. Don't drag an icon to the general page of an object. For some reason the 
  191. general page does not know how to handle the object being dropped. This
  192. results in drag & drop being unavailable in the whole Workplace Shell (at
  193. least on my system with 2.11).
