  4. To get a working system you will need both NewsBase and TTFN, if you have
  5. not downloaded both applications then do so before proceeding any further.
  6.  
  7. This document covers the installation of both !NewsBase and !TTFN.
  8.  
  9.  
  10. Introduction
  11. ------------
  12.  
  13. NewsBase & TTFN work together to provide similar functionality to that offered
  14. by other TCPIP aware newsreaders.  Those of you who are familiar with ReadNews
  15. will find a lot of the following material very familiar.
  16.  
  17. Newsbase - Is a news debatcher, server and database manager.  It performs
  18.    a similar role to that of !Incorp and much more.
  19.    
  20. TTFN - Is a newsreader that utilises NewsBase to present articles to the
  21.    reader.
  22.    
  23. The two communicate via WIMP messages.
  24.  
  25.  
  26. Recommendations
  27. ---------------
  28.  
  29.  + place all your internet related applications in one directory, either in
  30.    the root of your hard disc, or one directory below.  This is recommended
  31.    as the directory structure under !NewsDir becomes quite deep, and RISC OS
  32.    stops caching directory information after about 10 levels, making access
  33.    much slower.  Versions of NewsBase 0.44 and later address this problem to 
  34.    a certain degree, but long newsgroup names still mean the directory 
  35.    structure is deep.

  38. You will need:
  39. --------------
  40.    The latest version of NewsBase (at the time of writing v0.51)
  41.    The latest version of TTFN (at the time of writing v0.36)
  42.  
  43.  
  44. If you are switching from a version of readnews
  45. -----------------------------------------------
  46. Make sure your copy of !NewsDir has been seen by the filer *before*
  47. running NewsBase.  NewsBase will then automatically convert your NewsDir
  48. to the format required for NewsBase operation.  Do not worry - it's contents 
  49. will be preserved.

  52. Installing NewsBase
  53. -------------------
  54.  
  55.  1. Unpack !NewsBase from the newsbase archive to the chosen location on 
  56.     your hard disc (see "Recommendations" above).
  57.  
  58.  2. If you are a ReadNews user then you may migrate your existing !NewsDir
  59.     to the new system, a ReadNews 0.24 !NewsDir will be transparent in
  60.     operation - version 0.30 !NewsDir will be automatically detected and
  61.     confirmation of conversion will be required before it is performed.
  62.     
  63.  3. Run !NewsBase.
  64.  
  65.  4. Click with *adjust* on the NewsBase icon that has just appeared on your
  66.     iconbar.  The NewsBase choices window should open.
  67.  
  68.  5. Recommended settings for other options are set up as default, for a
  69.     detailed description of each option please read the documentation 
  70.     accompanying NewsBase
  71.     
  72.  6. Click on "Save" so the chosen options are written out to disk.
  73.

  75. Installing TTFN
  76. ---------------
  77.  
  78.  1. Copy !TTFN from the archive to the chosen location on your hard disc.
  79.  
  80.  2. Run !TTFN.
  81.  
  82.  3. Open the TTFN menu and choose "Users..."
  83.  
  84.  4. In section labelled "Create User", type in your chosen username and
  85.     click on "Create".  In the "User Details" section choose you newly
  86.     selected username, enter a real-life name and click on Set.
  87.     Close the User Management window.
  88.     
  89.  5. Change the currently selected user to the one you just created by means
  90.     of the submenu called "User" from the TTFN iconbar menu.
  91.  
  92.  5. Click on the !TTFN icon on your iconbar with *adjust*.  The !TTFN setup 
  93.     window will appear.  Change the default user to that of your newly 
  94.     created user-id.
  95.    
  96.  6. Change any other options you wish (see the documentation that accompanies
  97.     !TTFN for a full description of all the options), though the defaults 
  98.     should be adequate for the majority of users.
  99.  
  100.  7. Click on "Save" to write the new options to disk.
  101.  
  102.  8. Click on the !TTFN icon with *select.  If you have just migrated from 
  103.     a version of ReadNews (i.e. you have an existing !NewsDir), NewsBase 
  104.     will now generate an index for each of your groups.
  105.    
  106.     ** This may take some time **  please be patient - it's a one off thing,
  107.     if you want some progress indication, click on the newsbase icon with
  108.     select to reveal the NewsBase status window.
  109.    
  110. Eventually a list of newsgroups very much like ReadNews should appear on 
  111. your desktop.
  112.  
  113. You are now ready to begin using them in ernest!
  114.
