The Copy selection in the Edit menu enables the user to copy the contents of the Storm Tracking Map window to the clipboard for use in other applications. The data in this window may be copied in three different ways.
Copying the Storm Tracking Map
Whenever any storm is displayed and the Storm Tracking Map window is the front window, the Copy selection in the Edit menu becomes Copy Picture. The Copy Picture selection copies exactly the visible portion of the Storm Tracking Map window to the clipboard. From there, the user may paste it into any other application that will accept graphic data.
This clipboard may then be pasted into another application to be included in a report along with text and other graphics, but the resulting picture usually looks best when printed on an ImageWriter or other bitmap-oriented printer. If the report is to be printed on a PostScript-based printer like the LaserWriter, the storm tracks on the printout may be highlighted differently depending on the particular application used for printing. The problem is caused by an incompatibility between Quickdraw (used to draw the screen images and print to the the ImageWriter) and PostScript (used to print to the LaserWriter).
If the picture doesn't print well in a word processing document, try first pasting into an application like MacPaint, then copying again and pasting into the word processing application. If this step is skipped, the storm tracks on the printout will not look like the screen.
Copying Maximum Data for Selected Storms
The Edit menu will change slightly if the command key is pressed before selecting the Edit menu with the mouse.
If the command key is pressed when one or more storms are displayed and the Storm Tracking Map window is the front window, the Copy selection in the Edit menu becomes Copy Max Data. The Copy Max Data selection copies the selection information and the maximum strength data for each selected storm to the clipboard. From there, the user may paste it into any other application that will accept text data. The text is formatted with tabs between each value for easy use in spreadsheet or table-driven programs.
Since most spreadsheets for the Mac don't accept dates before 1901, you may run into some date conversion problems when older storms are selected.
Copying Position Data for Selected Storm
The Edit menu will change slightly if the option key is pressed before selecting the Edit menu with the mouse.
If the option key is pressed when exactly one storm is displayed and the Storm Tracking Map window is the front window, the Copy selection in the Edit menu becomes Copy Pos Data. The Copy Pos Data selection copies the location and strength information for each position of selected storm to the clipboard. From there, the user may paste it into any other application that will accept text data. The text is formatted with tabs between each value for easy use in spreadsheet or table-driven programs.
If the option key is pressed when more than one storm is displayed and the Storm Tracking Map window is the front window, the Copy selection in the Edit menu becomes Copy All Pos Data. The Copy All Pos Data selection copies the location and strength information for each position of each displayed storm to the clipboard. From there, the user may paste it into any other application that will accept text data. The text is formatted with tabs between each value and a "*" between storms for easy use in spreadsheet or table-driven programs.
As mentioned above, since most spreadsheets for the Mac don't accept dates before 1901, you may run into some date conversion problems when older storms are selected.
