Basically what we wanted to do was see what kind of things could be done with arcade-like animation. This game is more of a programming demo for the us then anything else, but we thought other people might find it entertaining. Your mission in this game is to defend your cities from waves of ICBM's. This is accomplished with the defense missiles you have. Because of tracking stations already destroyed in the war, you can only track two of your missiles at once. This means you'll have to choose your shots wisely. Have fun and save your cities! It was created as an experiment to see if this sort of thing is feasible, and also because I got tired of using a stupid Xerox copy of the existing campus map whenever I got a support call. Even if you don't go to UNT, check out the map! You can see a list of the buildings, select one and be shown where it is. Or, you can tap on a building and be shown the name. Have you always wanted a Tricorder of your own? You can aim it at your friends and send beeping sounds to them (no, the beaming mechanism does not yet work). This is a fun one! Name = TapStyles 1.0.sit Path = AMUG CD:Files:Newton:Util:TapStyles 1.0.sit Size: 4K Date: 2/28/94 Version: 1.0 Description: TapStyles 1.0 - TapStyles is a simple little applet that, when activated, places a small dot in the upper right area of the Newton screen that allows quick access to the styles palette. I wrote it primarily for my own use as I found all other similar type applets not quite right for my own needs. It is small, unobtrusive, and, as far as I can tell, bug free. Once installed, tap on the little fountain pen nib icon and it will place a small dot in the upper right area of the Newton screen. When you tap on this dot, which is always available from any app, it instantly brings up the styles palette. Tapping on it again puts the styles palette away. Just load it, and play away. If you don't know how to play these games, instructions for each are included. Everything you place in your Newton is stored in a “soup”. A soup is different from both a flat file (or document), and more flexible that a database, which is why Apple came up with a different term to describe it. But like a database, a soup has separate entries, which can be thought of as records with similar data structure. Unlike personal computers, soups aren’t tied to a directory/folder-like structure. This makes it easier in some ways, harder in others. StewPot lets you - Copy entries in a soup, move entries from one store to another (Newt card to another), see what shareware apps add, remove a soup entirely and more. Full documentation. (Grocery shopping is very much like "order picking" in a warehouse with many SKU's.). Shopping List has been steadily improved as it's been used as a test ground for new approaches to Newton software. We envision a version 1.4 that will link Shopping List to the Find and Intelligent Assistance features of Newton. New to this version - The pull-down store section menu has been replaced with a palette of icon buttons. Audio feedback is included. Scrolling the overview lists is now in page steps instead of line steps. Name = Safe Guard 1.sit Path = AMUG CD:Files:Newton:Util:Safe Guard 1.sit Size: 11K Date: 2/28/94 Version: 1 Description: Safe Guard 1 - Safe Guard is a utility that allows you to password protect your PCMCIA cards. In order to use the card, the person inserting the card must enter the password. In order to use, tap the Safe Guard icon in the Extras Drawer. Tap the "Password" button and enter your password to use. Now whenever the card is put into a Newton, a password screen will open asking for the password. Upon entering the proper password, Safe Guard will open itself if someone placed the card into a Newton. Safe Guard will not open if there is not a log of bad attempts. You may tap any of the bad attempts in the log to get more info about the attempt. To turn off password protection, set the password to nothing just as in the Prefs. Name = Pour.sit Path = AMUG CD:Files:Newton:Util:Pour.sit Size: 19K Date: 2/28/94 Version: Description: Pour - Pour is a little utility that will allow you to choose any soup from the available stores on your Newt (or an onion — er — union soup if you have a card) and will pour it down the serial port at 9600-8-N-1. Pour sends the soup as text, with frames enclosed between braces and their entries labeled and arrays enclosed between square brackets. Pour came about for two reasons. First, I wrote a little app to keep track of the hours I spend working for my various clients (anyone who would like a copy, please ask — I haven't distributed it just because I haven't yet decided just what I want to do with it) and then realized that I probably didn't want to let the data accumulate in my Newt forever. Hence Pour! Its icon in the extras drawer indicates whether password protection is currently turned on or off. Click on its icon to toggle the state. The built-in way of turning on/off password protection is somewhat cumbersome, especially if you do it often. To turn off password protection you use Prefs, enter your old password, and leave the new password line blank. To turn password protection back on, you return to Prefs and reenter your password. The Password utility is so much easier!! Use of Password is free of charge. Name = Memory.sit Path = AMUG CD:Files:Newton:Util:Memory.sit Size: 5K Date: 2/28/94 Version: Description: Memory - It's a simple app that displays memory used out of total memory (internal). It also has a GC() (garbage collection) button on it. It floats and is draggable and is small enough that it shouldn't get in the way. It updates every 5 seconds. It's interesting to delete notes and names and watch your total memory grow as well to write notes and watch it shrink. You can watch memory grow until it's about topped out and then - boom - the Newton does a garbage collection. The point of this tool was just to make for a very simple memory indicator. Name = MailSaver 1.2.sit Path = AMUG CD:Files:Newton:Apps:MailSaver 1.2.sit Size: 18K Date: 2/28/94 Version: 1.2 Description: MailSaver 1.2 - MailSaver is a one-stop NewtonMail assistant. It gives you access to your inbox, outbox, sprintnet access number (including keeping a list of your frequently used access numbers). It can put away mail enclosures, save the text of a message to a new notepad entry, and strip internet routing headers from messages before saving them. New in version 1.2 - MailSaver will break messages into multiple notepad entries if it otherwise would not fit. You can now set the font, size, and style in which messages are saved. You can now set the folder where MailSaver will save your messages. Stored access numbers are now sorted alphabetically. The strip headers option is now more robust. Unfortunately, accessing NewtonMail while you are on the go isn't as easy as using the Newton itself. The biggest problem is that, as you move around the country, the phone number you have to dial to access NewtonMail changes from city to city. Of course, Apple provides a booklet listing all of the current NewtonMail phone numbers for each city, but that booklet takes up valuable travel space. Wouldn't it be great if there were a piece of Newton software that would let you change your NewtonMail phone number with just a few taps of the pen? Well there is! And, you just downloaded it! Demo. The Newton utility program that will start to make Newtons independent of desktop computers and cables. Magic App will allow you to - Move applications between the Newton's internal storage and external storage cards; Beam applications to another Newton; and Remove applications with a single tap of the pen. The only caveat is that Magic App is constrained by how much working memory the Newton has. This working memory is called the Frames Heap Memory. It is a fixed size so you can only move and beam fairly small applications. Currently, 20-30K. HOWEVER, Apple has said they will be fixing this limitation so on future Newton devices, you may be able to beam much larger applications with this utility. GSTcalc is a simple tool for calculating the Canadian Goods & Services tax, as well as the provincial sales tax for the different provinces. Here are the percentages used for each province - Alberta, North West Territories and Yukon 0%, British Columbia & Manitoba 7%, New Brunswick & Nova Scotia 11%, Newfoundland 12%, PEI 10%, Ontario 8% Quebec (P) 8% (for products, calculated on top of GST), Quebec (S) 4% (for services, calculated on top of GST), and Saskatchewan 9%. Actually, this is a version for New Zealand. Here’s an undocumented feature - you can drag GSTcalc by it’s title! GSTcalc calculates on rounded numbers, which is the right way to calculate taxes (if you don’t do this, you will end up with a 1 cent difference.). Contact the author if you want him to produce a GST calculator for your area! Name = DateCaln 1.4.sit Path = AMUG CD:Files:Newton:Util:DateCaln 1.4.sit Size: 16K Date: 2/28/94 Version: 1.4 Description: DateCaln - These freeware applications are for those who have to synchronize their Newton calendar with an outside calendar. The first program, “DateList” is for extracting changes made on the Newton for addition to the calendar. The second program, “UpdateCal” replaces the Intelligent Assistant for adding entries into the Newton Calendar. “DateList” lists future calendar entries which have changed between executions. The lists may be printed, faxed or copied to the notepad. When the close box is pressed, “DateList” will ask to reset the date last synchronized. An “OK” will clear these entries from future lists, while “Cancel” does not reset the date. Name = Brain 2.0.sit Path = AMUG CD:Files:Newton:Util:Brain 2.0.sit Size: 11K Date: 2/28/94 Version: 2.0 Description: Brain 2.0 - Battery Brain for Newtons monitors your battery level and can alert you if the battery level drops below a user-defined threshold. If you've used your Newton a lot, you already know how quickly it can eat through batteries. But, you will probably be surprised at how fast your battery life decreases once your batteries drop below a certain level. Battery Brain monitors that decrease and will warn you as your batteries become weaker and weaker. Battery Brain will also automatically turn off sounds and the "Receive beams automatically" setting at user defined levels to help conserve battery power. This version is a complete rewrite from the ground up, with many changes! Name = Biorythms 1.0.sit Path = AMUG CD:Files:Newton:Apps:Biorythms 1.0.sit Size: 16K Date: 2/28/94 Version: 1.0 Description: Biorythms 1.0 - The biorythm theory is based on the assumption that the human body has inner clock or metabolic rythms with constant cycles of time. Currently, three cycles starting at birth in a positive direction are postulated. The 23-day or physical cycle relates with physical vitality, endurance and energy. The 28-day or sensitivity cycle relates with sensitivity, intuition and cheerfulness. The 33-day or cognitive cycle relates with mental alertness and judgement. For each cycle, a day is considered either high, low or critical. Now your Newton can display a two week biorythm after you input your name, birthdate and date to calculate. Biorythms also takes advantage of Newton's Assist function! This Ltd. version is limited to five accounts. Each of those accounts are limited to twenty transactions. If you decide to move up to Accountable, the data you create in Ltd. can be used in it. Accountable responds to many words and phrases via Assist. Accountable only adds the verb ‘Pay’ to the Assist menu, but it will also respond to - Charge, Deposit, Withdraw, Fly, and variations. Try running a phrase like “Charge $30 to Visa at Acme for shirt” through Assist, substituting your own credit account reference. Once you are ready to move up to the full working version, just send in the included order form. Typomatica lets you type into any Newt field from any computer with a serial port. KeyQUICK gives you instant access to Keyboard Pro from any application. KeyMAKER lets you build custom Macros for Keyboard Pro, install prebuilt keyboards and remove unwanted ones. Monitor lets you keep track of time, temperature, memory usage and battery levels. You start by entering the total, including tax and everything. Enter the tip rate - 15 percent...The tip will be calculated for you. Enter the number of people to divide the bill by. The great thing is the Extras section. Say you go out to lunch and your friend orders two drinks. You want to split the bill, but not pay for the drinks. Enter the cost of the drinks, and how many. That money will be subtracted from the split total. Then you each pay the split amount, and your friend throws in the extra for the drinks. It supports all standard Newton math and financial functions, allows the user to store multiple worksheets, has printing, faxing and mailing capability, and many other features. If there seems to be demand, I will expand QuickFigure Lite into a more complete version. The complete version would most likely include import/export capability from your Mac/DOS machine, graphing, scrolling, and online help. If you are interested in the full version (the price will be around $35), please let the author know. If not stored on a card, the program is called whenever the Newton is reset. This program will allow you to bypass the login screen if you happen to forget your password. It will then allow you to disable the password protection so that you may reset your password. At no time does it show the current password. This way the password itself stays protected in case of misuse of this program. I distribute this only as a utility for YOUR Newton and emergencies (i.e. you forget your password and you can't wait for the turn around from Apple). Without this program, if you forget your password, you have to ship your Newton to Apple!! These lists can consist of anything you wish. Some people use them as lists of things to purchase, others prefer to use them as a To Do replacement. So feel free to put in whatever you like! When you open List-It, the first thing you see is an empty list. This is where you’ll see the names of the lists you’ll create (ex - Grocery, To Do, whatever). To see a particular list, tap on that lists’s line. If you’re starting from scratch, just tap on the NEW button. There are now three types of lists to choose from, a plain list, quantity and price list, or a list with comments. You can also erase all checked items. You'll need a Newton for this one. GREAT!! The Newton will only let you see and access 30 programs from the Extras drawer. IceBox gets around that. It presents a scrolling list of your programs, allowing you to open those that you can't see in the drawer. Also included is minimize, which lets you have access at all times to the your list of programs. You must install these two before you've hit the limit of 30 (so you can see them and launch em). Caution, I've heard that loading up your Newton can cause a System Heap problem, and problems down the road. Just don't put 60 programs on!! There are a number of balls hidden on an 8x8 grid. You must try to find them by firing rays into the grid and observing if and where the ray exits the grid. The balls cause the ray to either stop if it hits one, or to bounce ninety degrees if the ray passes to the side of a ball. By examining the results, you must try to determine the locations of the balls in the least time and fewest nuber of shots possible. Have fun!
