  26.                                GENERAL DESCRIPTION
  27.                                ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  28.           Portfolio Manager is a record keeping system for investors.  
  29.           You may split your portfolio into as many as five accounts 
  30.           to separate your records for accounts such as an IRA, an IRA 
  31.           for a spouse or child, a special purpose account, etc.  PM 
  32.           measures portfolio performance to meet your long range goals.
  33.           It computes ROI, estimated & actual yields, as well as other 
  34.           analytical data.  It serves as an excellent tax planning and 
  35.           preparation tool.  The main features include the ability to 
  36.           maintain records on the purchase and sale of securities; enter 
  37.           dividend, interest and capital gains distributions; calculate 
  38.           gain/loss and total return on investments (ROI); automatically 
  39.           enter reinvested income distributions; perform stock splits; 
  40.           and periodically update security prices.  It will also allow 
  41.           grouped sales of multiple purchases using a variety of methods 
  42.           - first-in/ first-out (FIFO), last-in/first-out (LIFO), or 
  43.           specifically marked shares.  Purchase, sale, and distribution 
  44.           information can be viewed on the screen, printed or sent to a 
  45.           file, and the reports can be for one or more securities and 
  46.           one or more accounts.  Reports sent to a file may be combined 
  47.           to build a custom report combination.  There are 17 distinct 
  48.           reports and an unlimited number of report combinations.  PM is 
  49.           menu driven and mouse compatible.

  51.           In addition, recently added options allow you to generate 
  52.           Schedule B and Schedule D 1040 support statements, customize 
  53.           the screen colors and 13 other user defined options,  create 
  54.           a full disclosure report on investments, and select individual
  55.           accounts for reports.  See PM_FEATU.DOC for full list of the

  60.           Since PM calculates ROI and yields, income oriented investors
  61.           can determine performance including dividends.  Most other 
  62.           portfolio managers simply record distributions, but PM also 
  63.           factors distributions into calculated performance results.

  65.           Portfolio Manager provides a powerful and flexible alternative
  66.           to commercially available investment software - at a lower 
  67.           cost!  Registration: $49.00. (s&h $3.00 Canada, $5.00 int'l)

  69.                                  UNIQUE FEATURES
  70.                                  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  71.           Portfolio Manager automatically updates your investment if 
  72.           income is reinvested rather then require a separate entry.  
  73.           You may subdivide your portfolio in up to five separate 
  74.           accounts. Produces a check  list for your 1099's.  Creates 
  75.           supplemental tax statements that may be submitted with your 
  76.           tax return.  PM generates reports that provide the information 
  77.           needed to prepare your tax returns. Reports may be sent to a 
  78.           disk file for later screening or printing.  Maintains broker 
  79.           account records.  The program is menu driven with error 
  80.           checking, on line help, backup routines, and multiple report 
  81.           options.  Files may be automatically tested on program start.  
  82.           And, best of all, it's easy to use.  A bonus calculator 
  83.           program can import results to a numeric input request.  Two 
  84.           manuals (full & notes) are in a compressed file on disk # 3.

  86.                                SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  88.           Portfolio Manager requires an IBM or compatible.  Due to the 
  89.           size of the program, a hard disk is required.  It may be used 
  90.           used with any monitor and any printer.  For best results, you
  91.           should have a minimum of 440 KB of free memory - 520 KB is
  92.           recommended.  PM requires approx 1.8 MBytes of hard disk space.

  94.           The program was created using FOXPRO(tm) Ver1.02 and compiled 
  95.           with the FOXPRO (tm) compiler to produce the  distribution 
  96.           version.  Program features are accessed with a bar-menu.  The 
  97.           program uses extensive sub-menus which are  accessed by using 
  98.           the  bar-menu or entering the number of the desired feature.

  103.           about PM. I suggest you review all of them before installation.

  107.                         the form, PLEASE answer ALL the questions.)

  109.           PM_FILES.DOC (A complete listing of ALL files included in PM)
  110.           PM_OMB.ASP   (Instructions on how to resolve a dispute)
  111.           PM_LICEN.DOC (Complete license and warranty information)
  112.           PM_FEATU.DOC (A summary of basic and upgraded features in PM)
  113.           The full documentation manuals are on distribution disk # 3 in 
  114.           a compressed file named MANUALS.EXE.  They will be extracted
  115.           from the compressed file as part of the installation program.

  121.                             INSTALLATION & CONFIGURATION
  122.                             ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  123.           The Portfolio Manager program is quite large and therefore it's
  124.           stored in 3 self-extracting, compressed files on 3 distribution 
  125.           disks.  The compressed files were produced by the compression
  126.           program LHA written by Haruyasu Yoshizaki.  Unpacking to a hard 
  127.           drive is required due to the size of the program. 
  128.  
  129.           The program PM_INSTL.EXE has been provided to install the 
  130.           program.  I STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU READ THE FILE PM_INSTL.DOC 
  131.           BEFORE BEGINNING THE INSTALLATION PROCEDURE.  This "DOC" file 
  132.           contains expanded information on the installation sequence, 
  133.           however, the following is all that is required to initialize 
  134.           the installation routine.

  136.           If the active drive is NOT the drive containing the distribution 
  137.           disk, make it active.  Assuming distribution disk # 1 is in a 
  138.           floppy disk drive, at the DOS prompt type: 
  139.  
  140.                  A:\>PM_INSTL        -- or --        B:\>PM_INSTL
  141.                  press ENTER (RETURN) to start the installation.
  142.           
  143.           You'll be prompted for the necessary information.  Any hard disk
  144.           directories you name will be created if they don't exist.  After 
  145.           installation, the new PM directory will be the active directory.

  152.           One of the manuals, MANUAL.DOC, is the complete documentation on
  153.           the use of PM.  The second manual is an abbreviated version of the
  154.           full manual.  To create the second manual, I extracted all the
  155.           notes, suggestions, tips, warnings, etc. from the original manual
  156.           and placed them in the file PM_NOTES.DOC.
  157.  
  158.           Also included in the compressed file, MANUALS.EXE, on disk # 3 are
  159.           two programs, PRT-MAN.COM and PRT-NOTE.COM.  These programs will
  160.           send the respective manual to your printer to produce a printed
  161.           copy (See the file PM_INSTL.DOC for more info on the manual).

  171.           NOTE: You MUST make the drive and sub-directory containing 
  172.           Portfolio Manager active BEFORE entering the command "PM". If 
  173.           this is not the case, change to the appropriate drive/directory.

  177.           If you already have an earlier version of Portfolio Manager 
  178.           installed, install the new version in the same directory.  
  179.           The new version will NOT overwrite YOUR data files.  The 
  180.           install program will ask if you're upgrading from an earlier 
  181.           version.  If you respond (Y)es it will ask the location of 
  182.           the earlier version, confirm it, then install the required 
  183.           files.  An upgrade utility will be invoked automatically when 
  184.           PM is started for the first time.
  185.           IF YOU ARE UPGRADING, YOU MUST INSTALL THE NEW VERSION IN THE 
  186.           DIRECTORY CONTAINING THE PREVIOUS VERSION AND DATA FILES.

  189.                              THE FIRST TIME YOU USE IT
  190.                              ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  191.           Portfolio Manager is designed to activate a configuration 
  192.           utility the FIRST time the program is started.  Although the
  193.           configuration module may be called from a sub-menu, a first 
  194.           time user may find the program easier to configure with the 
  195.           automatic activation of this feature. 
  196.           
  197.           If you're a first time user OR even if you're upgrading from a
  198.           prior version, the FIRST time you start PM, it should go directly 
  199.           to a CONFIGURATION UTILITY.  If you start the program for the 
  200.           first time (new user OR upgrade) and you see an introduction 
  201.           screen with "CREATE BACK-UP OF DATA RECORDS  Yes  No", respond 
  202.           with a "Y" or press ENTER and the MAIN MENU will appear.  Next 
  203.           select "Misc" from the Main Menu then OPTION 9 (Configure...) 
  204.           from the Misc menu.  This will activate the Configuration menu.  
  205.  
  206.           TIP:   At the very minimum select Option 2 (colors) and select a
  207.           color (or monochrome) set from the available options.  This will
  208.           reset certain screen features for the current version. 
  209.           
  210.                          GETTING STARTED WITH YOUR RECORDS
  211.                          ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  212.           The most difficult part, in my opinion, of starting ANY new 
  213.           software package is bringing it up to date with YOUR data. 
  214.  
  215.           After you have installed the program, I STRONGLY recommend you 
  216.           review section 1.H in the manual, "Starting YOUR data", before 
  217.           entering any data in the records.
  218.           
  219.                             CREATING AND USING SAMPLE DATA    
  220.                            ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  221.           If you would like to experiment with entries prior to entering 
  222.           YOUR data, do the following: 
  223.               1. Start the program      (enter PM at DOS prompt)
  224.               2. Configure the program  (automatic first time the program 
  225.                  is started otherwise select MISC opt # 9) 
  226.               3. When you exit Config, the program will restart with the
  227.                  new settings.  The opening screen asks you to "Make 
  228.                  backup...".   Answer (Y)es !! 
  229.               4. Enter your practice data (or real data if you want to).
  230.               5. On subsequent starts, do NOT answer (Y)es to backup 
  231.                  question on the opening screen UNTIL you have decided
  232.                  to KEEP the entered data.

  237.               6. When you want to remove all the practice data, select 
  238.                  option # 9 from the MISC menu (Configure...) and then 
  239.                  option "F" from the submenu (Clear all data files).  
  240.                  This action will reset the files to the way they were on 
  241.                  the distribution disk (ie. you'll have to re-enter your 
  242.                  name, your account names, etc.).  You will then be ready 
  243.                  to enter YOUR real data. 
  244.           
  245.                                    MISCELLANEOUS
  246.                                    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  247.           It's our intention to support this program as well as add new 
  248.           features in future releases.  If you have a suggestion or idea 
  249.           of what you would like to see in a future  release, please drop 
  250.           me a note.  Future releases with additional features will be 
  251.           offered to REGISTERED users at a nominal cost.

  253.           Please forward bug reports, problems, questions, suggestions, 
  254.           or general feelings about PM to the address at the top of this 
  255.           document.  As of the preparation of this document, Shane 
  256.           Software is not large enough to support a full time office.  If 
  257.           you attempt to contact me by phone and don't get an answer, 
  258.           PLEASE try again.  I will accept calls at any REASONABLE hour 
  259.           (9am - 9pm Pacific time) seven days a week (evening is best).
