ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Hoops/2 ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Hoops/2 is an OS/2 application for managing a college basketball tournament
pool. Contestants pick the winners of all 63 games in the tournament and their
picks are proecessed against the actual winners and losers as the tournament
progresses. The program enables the user to quickly evaluate and order all
entries according to user selectable scoring options.
To use the application:
1. Select the scoring option(s) to be used. Weight by seeding can be turned
on or off. One of three round weightings can be used. These options can
be changed at any time during the tournament.
2. Set the team names in the tournament draw and the region names in the draw.
3. Enter the contestant's picks by entering the contestant's name and
selecting the contestant's winners to the 63 games. To speed entry, the
default picks are the favorites. Note that the color green indicates a
favorite was picked, red that an upset was picked.
4. Update the draw as the various game results become known.
5. View the results via the Reports menu choice. Note that the last three
columns in the Results list box contain the region numbers of the finalists
and the winner of the tournament (see data beneath "22W"). The data
contained beneath the "RegionFinalists" and "Final4" are seed numbers. You
must relate the region number of the final 2 and winnner to the seed number
of the Final4 data to determine the seed numbers (teams) for the finalists
and winner.
That is all there is to it.
Some suggestions:
1. Use the "Alt+F7" hot key along with the cursor direction keys
(up/down/left/right) to move any dialog box that overflows the computer
screen (especially for portable computers.)
2. Use the number of correct picks as a tie breaker. This number is provided
in the Results list box in the Rounds section and requires no additional
input data from the contestants.
3. Add a "CoinFlip" entry. Everyone wants to know if they are ahead of the
"CoinFlip." This entry is created and managed in the same manner as any
other entry. The user must provide the actual 63 coin flips that determine
the winners to the games.
4. Save the Hoops/2 data often using the File menu choice to avoid losing
data.
5. Experiment with the scoring options to determine the one right for your
pool.
