A very gracious Newton user, Kate Gladstone, called me to report a bug in one of my other apps. After a bit of dodging on her part as to why she hadn't paid a shareware fee for the app, we got to talking about what other apps were needed for the Newton.
Kate explained that there was no easy way to look up dates on the Newton other than scrolling endlessly in the Dates application. It was extremelty tedious if you needed to know what day of the week a certain date falls upon. Tap, tap, tap, etc. until you got to the month in question. Thus DateView was born.
Kate says she's no longer using e-mail since it was becoming an expensive addiction. (I wonder what a real drug habit costs per hour?) She's agreed to cough up a few bucks for my other apps and send me a disk. When I get the disk, this will go on it for her, free of charge. Hey, she was nice enough to fess up, pay up and make am interesting app request. I'm a nice guy, so this one's on the house. If you've got a similar cool idea, let me know.
DateView currently resides in the Extras drawer. If enough users request it, I'll hide it in the Formulas app instead. (Just like my nConverter app)
When you tap on the DateView icon, a window with the current month appears. You can enter a new date into the input line below the calendar. Use your local short date format. For US users this is mm/dd/yyyy or 4/12/1995 for example. Some international users switch the order of the month and day. This ends up as dd/mm/yyyy or 12/4/1995. Use whatever your local format supports.
Once you've entered a date, tap the little magnifying glass (search) icon to the right of the entered date. This will display that month.
If you'd like to jump to a date on the month view, tap it. This will open the built-in Dates application and turn to that date. You can keep DateView open while Dates is open.
You can move DateView by dragging on the "DateView" title text.
You can only view dates from 1/1/1904 to 12/31/2100. This is all the Newton supports for dates. If you really need older dates, let me know.
It's Install/Remove polite and will not leave anything behind in your Newton. It does not create any soups. You can put it on your card. You should, of course, close the app before ejecting the card.
If you have any suggestions for DateView, let me know. I'm currently considering adding a feature for Julian/Gregorian displays. I might also be able to support holidays and such. If you want a feature, ask me!
The idea I'm considering for holidays is a pop-up menu, possibly for each month. This would let you select the holiday and have it highlighted on the month view. I may implement this in an overview-like listing.
