server. These elements include:

Fforum). You can use message forums as forums for discussing everything
*from political debate to for-sale notices.

Message forum access levels
;For message forums, there are two types of access levels al

?Iaccess that governs whether an account can enter the message forum, and a

D access that determines whether an account can add his own messages.

FThe Read Level specifies who may be allowed to enter the message forum
Dwhile the Write Level specifies who may be allowed to post their own
Imessages. The Access Group specifies whether members of a specified group
Mshould be allowed access, whether they have the necessary read access or not.
Moderators
HThe Moderator Group specifies an individual or group that has Sysop-like
Pabilities (delete posts and release files) for this message forum only. To add a
Jmoderator you can either type in the name of the account or group, or drag
Jthe account or group from either the Accounts list or Group list window. A
9moderator always has read and write access for his forum.

JThe Purge after setting specifies how long a message should be kept before
GNLP deletes it. A value of zero indicates that messages should never be
automatically deleted.
KThe Use Threaded Style settings specifies whether messages
 replies will be
Gstored as threads or in a flat (non-hierarchical) format. The Send Post
LBulletins has NLP alert all on-line callers when a message is posted in this
Dmessage forum. The Allow Anonymous posts settings determines whether
Hposters can post messages without recording their identity. The List New
HFirst checkbox determines whether NLP will list the messages in older-to
2newer order, or the reverse, for NovaTerm callers.

Message forum structure
+A message forum structures its messages in
threads

Cis a parent message with a chain of responses after it. This format
Bmore closely mirrors the usual type of traffic in a message forum.
<Since several exchanges may be going on at once, this format
divides them conceptually:

DA regular message forum divides messages into streams or threads, so

EProfessional keeps only the time of your last visit when performing a

marked as old.

BFile libraries are repositories into which files (applications and
?documents) can be deposited and retrieved. Each file library is
Busually devoted to a single topic, such as clip art, music, games,
Dutilities and so forth. It is also possible to attach a CD-ROM drive
)with a ready-made CD disk full of pre-com
pressed files to

<In order to understand file libraries, it is important to un
derstand file

MInformation servers are particularly useful for transferring files (documents
Fand applications) between the host computer and the caller
s computer.

*-GA protocol determines how the file will be transmitted in an error-free
.fashion. NovaLink Professional supports two ba
sic types of file transfer
?/protocols for VT100 callers: XMODEM and ZMODEM.
MXMODEM is one of the original file transfer protocols for personal computers.
NIt is simple, robust and ubiquitous. It has two variations, the original and a
faster 1024 byte block ver
sion.
?CZMODEM is a faster and more modern protocol that has the ability to
Kresume a transfer that was interrupted for whatever reason. This feature is
?especially handy for large transfers and long-distance callers.

Batch downloads
NBatch downloads allow a caller to download several files in a single transfer.
EOnly terminal programs that support ZMODEM file transfer protocol can
take advantage of this feature.
OTo use batch downloads a user simply has to type A to add a file to his list of
Lfiles. On the last file, the user selects
 and the batch download begins.
IAlternately, a
 command in a file library immediately begins the batch
    transfer.

AOrdinarily, users will send their files to your server with their
Ntelecommunication program. If you wish to upload a file locally, you will have

uDIf you are operating a public server, you should always check a file
Bbefore making it publicly accessible. You will not want commercial
files, virus-in
)8:fected files, obsolete or inappropriate files making their
uBway onto your server, so first be sure to scrutinize carefully all
Fuploads. Remember that you will be legally liable if pirated files are
available on your server.
Downloading

3To download a file, you may either type in the file
4number, or its name. NovaLink Professional will then
9give you the long description of the file, and ask you if
you wish to pro

Deleting files

Notherwise the file will remain on the hard disk, but its name will be put on a
Flist of about to be killed files for you to delete later, if you wish.

GChoice K lets you exempt downloads from this library from counting in a

s total download. The call/post ratio specifies the ratio the user must
Kmaintain in order to download from this library. For instance, a value of 3
Pwould indicate that a caller must post, on average, every third call in order to
Qdownload from this library.  A value of zero indicates that no call/post ratio is
Gnecessary. The Upload access level specifies the minimum access level a
Ncaller must have to upload a file. Enforce download limits specifies whether a
Hcaller who is over his download limit may still download files from this
library.
NChoice S lets you add or remove Moderators for this library. Choice T lets you
Qspecify a maximum size for all the files in the library. For instance, if you set
Hthe maximum size to 1024K (one megabyte), NovaLink Professional will not
Oallow any more uploads if the combined size of all files in the library exceeds
1024K.

7The most important choice in creating a file library is

7A self-maintaining library always reflects the contents
Oof a specified folder on a Macintosh hard drive. For instance, you could create

)c3If you have a CD-ROM drive, you can purchase any of
3eral CD-ROM disks specifically designed to run with

Cmation servers. These disks contain thousands of already compressed
*public domain files ready for downloading.

?MSince a CD-ROM is a read-only device, a library that has file listings from a
ACD-ROM must be designated as read-only. This prevents anyone from

?LNovaLink Professional will also ask you for a folder name to place the files
Hinto on your disk. If you wish to keep them in the NLP Files folder, sim
press the Return key.

Using picture previews
INovaLink Pro lets you attach a picture preview (for NovaTerm callers) for
Iany file in a file library. If the file is a PICT file, NLP automatically
generates a picture preview.
NIf the file in the library is an archive created with Compactor
 or StuffIt
INLP looks for a PICT resource of ID 128 inside the archive. NLP uses this
Lpicture as the preview. This picture ideally should be 85 by 115 pixels, but
0NLP will scale the image if it is not this size.
PIf you wish to create picture previews for other kinds of files, you must follow
Ma different method. First you need to create a file in the NLP File Libraries
Kfolder. The name of this file must match the file library
s name and have a
.PICT
 extension. For instance, if you have library named
Fruit
 you would
Icreate a file called
Fruit.PICT
 in the NLP File Libraries folder. Next,
Lsuppose you have a file called Apple in this library. With ResEdit you would
Hinsert a PICT resource named
Apple
 into the
Fruit.PICT
 file. Now you

HBefore logging on to a NovaLink Pro server, you need to provide NovaTerm
Ewith some vital information about your connection settings.  Take the
0following steps the first time you use NovaTerm.

Ltwo more folders and label them "Configuration Files" and "Receive Files" as

Hmodem talks to the other modem. This ability lets the modem compress the
Mdata, and thus send it faster. Since the Mac is talking faster than the modem
Lis operating, the modem must be able to signal to the Mac to stop and resume
Mdata transfer, in order that no data is lost. A hardware handshaking cable is
Irequired so that these signals will be properly conveyed to the computer.
HThe speed should be the maximum speed of your modem, provided you have a
Ehardware handshaking cable. If you do not have a hardware handshaking
@cable (or if your modem is a 2400 bps model without MNP or other
Ccompression) then the maximum speed must be the speed at which your
modem talks to the other modem.

4Select a port from the "Connection Port" popup menu.
GSelect a volume level for your modem from the Modem Volume pop-up menu.
KYour global settings are now set. These settings are stored in the NovaTerm
Lpreferences file in your System Folder so you will not need to set them each
call.
K5. Select a NovaLink server you wish to call from the Server Menu. If there
Nare no configuration files in your "Configuration Folder",  the menu will look

File transfers
HWhenever you download a file, the Download Viewer window appears. If you
Mdownload a file while other files are being downloaded, they are added to the
Darea below the file currently being transferred. The Download Viewer
Lestimates the amount of time left on the current file and on all files being
transferred.
GThe Upload Viewer performs the same functions when you are transferring
files to the server.
ITo cancel the current file downloading, click on the Cancel button in the
Eupper portion of the window. NovaLink Professional will then begin to
Stransfer the next file in the list, if there is one. To remove a file from the list
Jof files waiting to be downloaded, select the file and click on the Remove
button.
NNote that while files are being transferred, you can still use the server. You
Jmay notice a slight delay in performance at times, since the server has to
'handle the overhead of a file transfer.
