  5. What is Substitute?
  6.  
  7. •Substitute 1.5 is a file utility.
  8.     Substitute 1.5, like Substitute 1.0 already, is able to copy, move, rename,
  9. delete files. But now Substitute 1.5 can also lock/unlock files and is able to
  10. make full aliases. Substitute 1.5 has also, since version 1.0, improved ability
  11. to move files: it moves, now, even locked files and remove, optionally, files
  12. with the same name, present in the new location (if the already present file in
  13. the new location is unlocked, otherwise Substitute 1.5 returns error -45).
  14. Should someone desire the deletion of locked files, please ask me; however I
  15. discourage this: security is very important! 
  16. If you want to move and rename a locked file, Substitute 1.5 moves it but
  17. leaving the original name.

  19.     Be careful: if you want to move and rename a locked file and, in the new
  20. location, a file with old name already exists, Substitute 1.5 leaves everything
  21. untouched: you were clearly kidding!

  23. •Substitute 1.5 is an info utility.
  24.     Substitute 1.5, like Substitute 1.0 already, gathers information about files
  25. and changes their attributes (type, creator, various flags, etc...).
  26. But    Substitute 1.5 returns more informations : file name, size, creation and
  27. modification date/hour, lock state. With reference to flags setting, now you
  28. can copy some type or some creator (or both) belonging to another file.

  30.     All these abilities are located in the menu  "Special" and in the window
  31. "Main Window".

  33. •Substitute 1.5 is a Drag&Drop utility.
  34.  Substitute 1.5 supports Drag&Drop of multiple files: after dragging, a window
  35. will appear returning the dragged files number, the current file and the
  36. available operation. When only one file remains (or if only one file has been
  37. dragged), after its performance Substitute 1.5 quits. Otherwise you may go in
  38. the Main Window.

  40.  Remember: Substitute 1.5 works only with files, not with folders or disks. 
  41.     Moreover, if you try to open an Alias Substitute 1.5 will open the original.

  45. •Substitute 1.5 is a format utility.
  46.     Substitute 1.5, like Substitute 1.0 already , is able to format and to verify
  47. 800 & 1440K diskettes with a "verification only" option available.
  48.  But Substitute 1.5 is able to format 400k in addition to 800k and 1440k.
  49. Substitute 1.5 allows even the catalog only deletion, with 400k, 800k & 1440k
  50. verification and initialization option.

  52. Be careful: if you want to format/initialize a 1440k diskette, whit 400k option
  53. checked, the result will be a 1440k diskette. If you want to format/initialize
  54. a 1440k diskette, whit 800k option checked, the result will be error -50.

  56. Now when the window "Substitute Format" is called and if a diskette is already
  57. inserted, it is not ejected, but only unmounted. You can eject the inserted
  58. diskette with the "Eject" button. 
  59. Every operation is performed on the disk drive selected by the proper radio
  60. button (external or internal).
  61. The window "Substitute Format", now, does not close itself automatically, but
  62. only through the "Exit" button.

  66. •Substitute 1.5 is a Finder replacement for emergency diskette.
  67.   With the release of System 7 the capability to fit more applications in
  68. an emergency diskette disappeared: the free space left by System and Finder is
  69. indeed too small.    Substitute 1.5 can efficently replace the Finder (remember
  70. to change Substitute's  name to "Finder"...). From the menu "File", you can
  71. launch all the applications and the Desk Accessories you want. From the
  72. "Substitute" menu, by selecting "Add Application..." or "Add Desk Accessory..."
  73. you can add up to ten Applications and/or Desk Accesories, and launch them from
  74. the menus "Applications" & "Desk Accessories".

  76.  Well, many people have written to me they have problems in booting their
  77. Macintosh with Substitute...A little clarification: the System launches any
  78. application named Finder, without any check. The same applies to Substitute. If
  79. you put System & Substitute 1.5 in the System Folder you can't reboot, because
  80. Substitute 1.5 is not a real Finder, it is only a substitute!!! So for
  81. rebooting you must place, on the emercency diskette, only System & Substitute
  82. 1.5 (and the likely System Enabler) without System Folder (that is: at the root
  83. level).
  84.     (Oh...well, to make a short story long, I should also remind you about this:
  85. it is possible, after changing Substitute's  name to "Finder", to set type and
  86. creator to 'FNDR' and 'MACS'. In this case System & Substitute 1.5 must be
  87. placed in the System Folder and it will be possible to exploit the potentiality
  88. of extensions and controls. A caveat: it will not open controls and every time
  89. you quit Substitute 1.5, the System will relaunch it, just as the real Finder.
  90. This is because I did not insert, in Substitute 1.5, a Shutdown procedure
  91. (Substitute 1.5 must be small). Should you want a Shutdown procedure, drop me a
  92. line...).

  96. The Menu "System" allows you to see which resources are currently installed in
  97. the System...

  101.  Substitute 1.5 requires at least System 7 to run!
  102.  
  103.  Substitute 1.5 has been tested on my Macintoshes: Powerbook 145, LCIII,
  104. Classic. Also it has been tested on Macintosh Quadra 700, LC(Quadra)630, Duo
  105. 210, Duo 280c, IIci. The testing has been performed with System 7.1 & 7.5. The
  106. usage as Finder replacement has been tested only with System 7.1.

  108.     Substitute 1.5 would like to have many more options, such as the HD
  109. formatting or scanning and  mounting SCSI peripherals. This options will maybe
  110. be present in future releases, but you do not rely on this: Substitute 1.5 must
  111. stay small, small...

  116. daughter to provide for; so the money is always insufficent, as is the time I
  117. should reserve to my child, spent in front of the monitor. So, unfortunately,
