I M P O R T A N T
ICOM QUICKSILVER "README.TXT" FILE
***************************************************************************
This file contains information not included in the printed manual or
help files.
DEMO DISK
---------
If you are using the demonstration disk, the program will run for 10
minutes before stopping. You can run the program again, but only for another
10 minute period. You will also not be able to save memory data. IN ALL
OTHER RESPECTS THE DEMO PROGRAM IS THE SAME AS THE FULL VERSION.
When you order the full version of ICOM Quicksilver you should delete
the "ICOM Demo" program group and erase the "C:\ICOMDEM" directory from your
hard disk. A new program group is created for the full installation.
SPEED OF TUNING OPERATIONS
--------------------------
The speed of tuning operations over RS-232 is much slower than
directly from the radio's front panel. This is because the radio must
receive RS-232 commands, process them and produce a response. No
communications handling is needed for operations from the radio's own
front panel. Under Windows, tuning operations are further slowed by
the response time of your system.
You can adjust the delay period used for tuning and S-meter reads,
for optimum performance, from the "Setup|Delays" menu option. Start with
an S-meter and tuning delays of approximately 100 ms and gradually reduce
the tuning delay until just before signals are missed during scanning
operations. You should also be able to reduce the S-meter delay slightly.
The maximum speed of tuning operations during scanning operations will probably
still be limited by the speed of your system when running Windows.
You can optimise your tuning speed by:
1. Choosing minimum tuning and S-meter delays that work with your radio
2. Not running other applications in the background
3. Covering the VFO status window, or minimising it, to reduce redrawing
As a guide, you should be able to obtain maximum scanning speeds
using the following timings:
4800 baud 9600 baud
Tuning 120 ms 70 ms
S-meter 80 ms 90 ms
Upload 250 ms 250 ms
Download 150 ms 150 ms
HELP INFORMATION
----------------
Extensive help information is available through the context sensitive
hypertext help system provided by Windows. The size of the user's manual has
been reduce to take this into account. Detailed printed manuals are no longer
needed by most Windows users.
RUNNING WINDOWS AND ICOM QUICKSILVER FROM THE DOS PROMPT
--------------------------------------------------------
Normally, ICOM QuickSilver should be started within Windows by double
clicking on the icon within the ICOM Quicksilver group in Program Manager.
However, it is also possible to start Windows and launch ICOM Quicksilver from
your DOS prompt using the following sequence of commands:
CD\QUICK
WIN QUICK
This assumes that the directory containing the program files is the
default "\QUICK" directory.
You may find it useful to create a batch file with these commands in
it if you frequently need to start ICOM Quicksilver in this way.
RUNNING MULTIPLE COPIES OF ICOM QUICKSILVER
-------------------------------------------
Windows allows up to four serial ports to be used by application
software. Normally, one is reserved for the mouse, which leaves three that
can be used by ICOM Quicksilver. More than one copy of Quicksilver can be
used at the same time if you have more than one ICOM radio connected to your
computer.
You can run more than one copy of ICOM Quicksilver by launching each
copy from the program group one after the other. Each additional copy of ICOM
Quicksilver uses the default setup obtained from "QUICK.INI". Use the
Setup|Communications option of the main menu to change the serial port to that
used with your additional radios.
The current serial port, and it's parameters, is displayed in the title
of the main ICOM Quicksilver window.
Only the original copy of ICOM Quicksilver can alter the "QUICK.INI"
file.
