  10. DEMONSTRATION VERSION
  11. ---------------------
  12.  
  13. Welcome.  The demo versions of MUFsight has fixed date and sunspot values
  14. but is otherwise fully working.
  15.  
  16. To install the demonstration, you just need to unzip the distibution file
  17. (if appropriate) and run the INSTALL.EXE program.  All the distribution
  18. files will be copied into a directory on your hards disk.  Note, no files
  19. will be copied into your Windows directory and your system INI files will
  20. not be edited.  This makes removal of the demo simple.

  33. COPY PROTECTION (not demo version)
  34. ---------------

  36. This software is copy protected using a system which places a token on
  37. your hard disk when you install the program.  The program will
  38. only work on the disk you installed it to.  There is no dongle or 
  39. key-disk, so once installed the program runs completely normally and you 
  40. will not be inconvenienced (unlike other schemes).  However, you cannot
  41. DISKCOPY the distrubution disk or duplicate it with COPY commands.
  42.  
  43. Specific points to remember:
  44.  
  45. 1. The distribution disk contains two tokens.  This means that you can 
  46. install up to two complete copies of the software on separate machines 
  47. at once.  You cannot transfer the program to another machine without 
  48. first moving one of the tokens back onto the original distribution disk 
  49. then re-installing.  The tokens can easily be moved with the MOVE.EXE 
  50. program that is provided.  Contact us if you need additional copies of #
  51. the software.

  53. 2. You should keep your original disk in a safe place away from strong 
  54. magnetic fields, high humidity or other environmental conditions that 
  55. could damage it.  You will not be able to re-install the software or move 
  56. it to another machine without the original distribution disk.
  57.  
  58. 3. Two hidden files are copied to a hidden subdirectory of the target
  59. directory when you install the software.  These contain configuration
  60. information for the copy protection scheme and are normal DOS format files.
  61. DO NOT DELETE THESE FILES UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.  If these files are
  62. deleted, your software will not run.
  63.  
  64. 4. If you are using a backup utility, make sure that the two hidden files 
  65. are not backed up otherwise, when restored, the copy protection scheme may 
  66. not be able to validate the installation and your software will not run.  
  67. Most backup utilities do not touch these files because they have the hidden, 
  68. system and read-only attributes set.  The two copy protection files also do 
  69. not have the archive bit set, so you should be able to exclude them from 
  70. backups by setting up your backup software to ignore files without an 
  71. archive bit.  Remember, it is not the backup but the restore that can 
  72. cause problems.

  74. 5. The /d+ option of the PC-Kwik disk cache software from Multisoft 
  75. Corporation is not compatible with the copy protection scheme and should be 
  76. temporarily disabled when installing your AOR software or moving the token.  
  77. HyperCache also affects the copy protection scheme in the same way because 
  78. of non-standard methods of accessing the floppy disk drive.  Again, it 
  79. should be temporarily disabled, but both caches may be used at other times.

  81. 6. The copy protection scheme is compatible with disk drives compressed with 
  82. SuperStor, Stacker and DoubleSpace.  However, you should temporarily remove 
  83. the token from the hard disk when installing one of these compression 
  84. utilities because the protection will appear invalid when the drives are 
  85. compressed.  The disk compression utilities warn you of this in their manuals.

  87. 7.  The copy protection scheme is known to be compatible with the following 
  88. disk defragmenters: Central PointÆs Compress, Digital Research's Diskopt, 
  89. Stac's Sdefrag and Microsoft's Defrag.

  91. 8.  The copy protection scheme is not currently compatible with Windows NT.
  92.  
  93. 9.  The copy protection scheme is not compatible with non-standard floppy
  94. disk systems.  At present (7/95) this includes the following PCs:

  96.     Evesham Vale Voyager laptop
  97.     Zeos Pentiums
  98.  
  99. It is possible to install onto a PC with a non-standard floppy disk (or no
  100. floppy disk) using a networked standard drive.  The easiest way to do this
  101. if you do not already have a network is to use the INTERLNK or INTERSVR
  102. utilities supplied with MS-DOS.
  103.  
  104. 10.  The copy protection scheme is compatible with Windows 95.  However,
  105. you can completely erase your tokens using Explorer to drag and drop the
  106. MUFsight directory onto the Recycle bin.  Although the token files are
  107. not deleted, they cannot be restored to their original positions on disk.
  108. EXPLORER DOES NOT GIVE WARNINGS LIKE FILE MANAGER UNDER WINDOWS 3.X!.
