UltraPak Version 2.1
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Welcome to UltraPak, the friendly packet radio terminal program. Version
2.1 contains some exciting new features. Read the file LATEST.TXT, or click
on the What's New icon to see what version 2.1 has introduced.
What is UltraPak ?
~~~~~~~~~~~~
UltraPak is a Windows program (Windows 3.1 or later) that talks to your TNC
in terminal mode. While some programs run the TNC in host mode they are
usually specific to one TNC. UltraPak, from 2.1 onwards, is usable with
almost all TNCs.
UltraPak has all the functionality that you would expect from a good terminal
program, plus the advantages and aesthetic appeal of running in a Windows
environment. UltraPak is not a DOS program that runs in a window - it is a
true Windows program.
The software is distributed on a shareware basis. The unregistered version
is fully functional - it does everything that the registered program does,
but sessions are limited to 30 minutes. When you register, you receive a
registration number and a key, which, when entered into the program, unlock
it and allow unlimited sessions. Registration also brings a comprehensive
manual and automatic notification of new releases. UltraPak is still
developing. If you use it and like it, and have suggestions or criticisms to
make, let the author know. The future development of the program depends on
what you want.
You should find the following files in this package :
CMDIALOG.VBX
COMMDLG.DLL
HISTORY.TXT

How to install UltraPak
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How you install UltraPak depends on how you obtained the UltraPak
distribution.
If you have obtained it from a BBS or via FTP, you will have a file called
UPAKnn.ZIP, where nn is the version number (e.g. UPAK21.ZIP). Copy this
file into a temporary directory on your hard disc and unzip the distribution
using the PKUNZIP utility. You should then have the files listed above in
that directory. Now run Windows, select Run from the Program Manager File
menu and enter the path for the SETUP.EXE file. For example, if you put the
files into a directory called TEMP on drive C:, then you would enter
C:\TEMP\SETUP. When you press Enter, the SETUP program will install UltraPak
for you.
If you have the UltraPak files on a floppy, then put the floppy into drive A: and select Run
from the File menu in Program Manager. Type "A:\SETUP" and press Enter.
The SETUP program will create a program group and items for you. You can run
UltraPak by double-clicking on the UltraPak "TNC" icon.
When running UltraPak for the first time, the default settings for port no.,
baud rate and parity etc. may not be compatible with your TNC. You have two
choices in this case:
1) Edit the file ULTRAPAK.INI located in your WINDOWS directory. The
parameters that you need to edit are located in the [PortSettings] section.
You may need to edit any or all of the settings in that section. After
editing, UltraPak should run normally.
2) Run UltraPak anyway. After a short delay you will receive an "error"
message telling you that the TNC is not responding and asking you if you
want to continue with UltraPak anyway. Continue, and then change the port
settings from within UltraPak. When you have changed the settings, exit
UltraPak and restart it.
For details of how to register UltraPak, read REGISTER.TXT or REGISTER.WRI.
The file LICENCE.TXT contains details of the licence agreement for UltraPak.
For details of the changes and new features in this version, see the file
LATEST.TXT or click on the "What's New" icon.
For help on connecting a TNC to UltraPak, see the on-line help under
"Connecting a TNC" and "TNC settings".
For help on configuring UltraPak for your TNC, in particular how to configure
streams, see "Configuring UltraPak" in the on-line help.
