  2. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  4. Welcome to UltraPak, the friendly  packet radio terminal program.  Version 
  5. 2.1 contains some exciting new features.  Read the file LATEST.TXT, or click 
  6. on the What's New icon to see what version 2.1 has introduced.

  8. What is UltraPak ?
  9. ~~~~~~~~~~~~
  10. UltraPak is a Windows program (Windows 3.1 or later) that talks to your TNC 
  11. in terminal mode.  While some programs run the TNC in host mode they are 
  12. usually specific to one TNC.  UltraPak, from 2.1 onwards, is usable with 
  13. almost all TNCs.
  14. UltraPak has all the functionality that you would expect from a good terminal 
  15. program, plus the advantages and aesthetic appeal of running in a Windows 
  16. environment.  UltraPak is not a DOS program that runs in a window - it is a 
  17. true Windows program.
  18. The software is distributed on a shareware basis.  The unregistered version 
  19. is fully functional - it does everything that the registered program does, 
  20. but sessions are limited to 30 minutes.  When you register, you receive a 
  21. registration number and a key, which, when entered into the program, unlock 
  22. it and allow unlimited sessions.  Registration also brings a comprehensive 
  23. manual and automatic notification of new releases.  UltraPak is still 
  24. developing.  If you use it and like it, and have suggestions or criticisms to 
  25. make, let the author know.  The future development of the program depends on 
  26. what you want.

  54. How to install UltraPak
  55. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  56. How you install UltraPak depends on how you obtained the UltraPak 
  57. distribution.
  58.  
  59. If you have obtained it from a BBS or via FTP, you will have a file called 
  60. UPAKnn.ZIP, where nn  is the version number (e.g. UPAK21.ZIP).  Copy this 
  61. file into a temporary directory on your hard disc and unzip the distribution 
  62. using the PKUNZIP utility.  You should then have the files listed above in 
  63. that directory.  Now run Windows, select Run from the Program Manager File 
  64. menu and enter the path for the SETUP.EXE file.  For example, if you put the 
  65. files into a directory called TEMP on drive C:, then you would enter 
  66. C:\TEMP\SETUP.  When you press Enter, the SETUP program will install UltraPak 
  67. for you.

  69. If you have the UltraPak files on a floppy, then put the floppy into drive A: and select Run 
  70. from the File menu in Program Manager.  Type "A:\SETUP" and press Enter.
  71.  
  72. The SETUP program will create a program group and items for you.  You can run 
  73. UltraPak by double-clicking on the UltraPak "TNC" icon.
  74.  
  75. When running UltraPak for the first time, the default settings for port no., 
  76. baud rate and parity etc. may not be compatible with your TNC.  You have two 
  77. choices in this case:
  78.  
  79. 1)  Edit the file ULTRAPAK.INI located in your WINDOWS directory.  The 
  80. parameters that you need to edit are located in the [PortSettings] section.  
  81. You may need to edit any or all of the settings in that section.  After 
  82. editing, UltraPak should run normally.

  85. 2)  Run UltraPak anyway.  After a short delay you will receive an "error" 
  86. message telling you that the TNC is not responding and asking you if you 
  87. want to continue with UltraPak anyway.  Continue, and then change the port 
  88. settings from within UltraPak.  When you have changed the settings, exit 
  89. UltraPak and restart it.
