  11.   Robot Helper is a Mirosoft Windows 3.1 application designed to assist
  12. in the use of a Robot 1200c color scan converter. Robot Helper (RH) permits
  13. slow scan tv images to be stored on your hard disk and provides an easy to
  14. use disk storage manager, complete with thumbnail previews of all images.
  15. Images can be displayed in two on-screen full color preview windows before
  16. uploading them to the 1200c scan converter. A separate panel allows you to
  17. control the operation and mode of the 1200c  directly from within RH. 
  18. Robot Helper comunicates with the 1200c through a standard 8255 based
  19. interface. The interface port addresses are fully configurable from within
  20. the software.
  21.   Robot Helper will also run in the background under Windows, permitting the
  22. simultaneous use of other Windows programs to provide paintbox and image
  23. processing functions. Images may be also stored on remote servers and 
  24. accessed over a local area network (LAN). Clip-art images can also be
  25. loaded directly off CD ROMs.

  27.   NOTICE: Robot Helper is a Shareware software product. You are encouraged
  28. to give it a try for a short period of time and to upload it (without
  29. changes) to any BBS or On-Line service.
  30. If you find the program useful and wish to continue to use it past the
  31. short (ie 10 days) evaluation period you are requested to register the

  64. Installation Notes
  65.  
  66. 1/If you downloaded RH from a BBS...
  67.     Unzip the file to a 1.44 meg (or 1.2 meg) floppy and run the
  68. setup program on the floppy from within the File Manager. If you have
  69. a RH.KEY file, place it in the same directory as you intalled RH.EXE.
  70. You should then have RH.EXE, RH.INI, RH.HLP, and RH.KEY together in the
  71. same directory.

  73. 2/ If you registered and received a setup disk...
  74.     Insert the disk into a floppy drive. From within the Windows File
  75. Manager double click on the SETUP.EXE file on the floppy. Next, use the 
  76. File Manager to copy the RH.KEY (Registration File) from the floppy
  77. disk into the directory where you installed Robot Helper (RH).

  80.     The setup utility will update some of the Windows DLL files 
  81. during installation. If you receive any messages during installation that
  82. file xxx.dll is locked or in use, you should quite out of any other
  83. Windows programs or drivers that may be using (& locking...) Windows DLL's.

  86. Notes:
  87.     If your 8255 ports are not at the 'standard' 300HEX address you
  88. should change the default port settings (Edit Menu->Setup) before
  89. sending any images to the Robot. Just run Robot Helper and select
  90. 'Setup' from the edit menu. The ports dialog box also allows you to
  91. increase the data delay to the 8255 interface and Robot 1200. On some
  92. fast machines ( 486 and up...) you may have to increase the dalay
  93. value to obtain reliable data communications with the Robot. On fast 
  94. computers it may also have to use fast (10 MHz) 8255A interface chips
  95. in both the Robot 1200 and the pc interface card, or add a 'wait state'
  96. to I/O cycles using your PC's setup program (Advanced Options Menu).

  98. Note:    If you are running in 8 bit (256 colors) VGA mode you will 
  99.     notice somewhat long delays whenever Windows must generate
  100.     a new color palette to try to match the real color images.
  101.     Robot Helper is MUCH FASTER when used with a 16 bit HiColor VGA
  102.     card or 24 bit TrueColor card. Image processing is poor at 
  103.     best on 8 bit cards.

  259.                  This currently only supports copying DIB
  260.                  (Device Independant Bitmap) clippings. These
  261.                  are the most common clipboard objects when
  262.                  dealing with image processing and (advanced)
  263.                  painting programs. Future versions may
  264.                  support DDB clippings also.
  265.                     If no selection rectangle is drawn, the
  266.                  whole Preview image is the source or target
  267.                  of the Copy/Paste operation. When pasting into
  268.                  a preview window clippings are scaled to fit
  269.                  the selection rectangle (if any).
  270.                 - Note: I would like to have Robot Helper
  271.                  run under Windows 95 in the future. The 
  272.                  current versions are mostly functional under
  273.                  Windows 95 final Beta with the following
  274.                  exceptions: 1/ the installer may complain a 
  275.                  bit but seems to work, 2/ selection rectangles
  276.                  are not visible (may be the VGA driver on my
  277.                  Win95 test machine.)

  289.                 This is basically a 'bug-fix' version.
  290.                 A somewhat nastey bug was introduced in version
  291.                 2.2 whith the addition of the [ON AIR] display
  292.                 and lockout of buttons the could talk to the
  293.                 Robot 1200. The basic idea works but RH had to
  294.                 read the front panel status during TX to
  295.                 determine when TX was done. This seemed to
  296.                 work fine (or at least the beta testers
  297.                 didn't catch it...) but some clones had major
  298.                 problems with slanted pictures during TX.
  299.                 On further investigation it appears that all
  300.                 1200s have increased 'jitter' in the image
  301.                 during TX. It appears that the 1200 gets
  302.                 upset when you request front panel status on
  303.                 a regular basis while it is trying to TX.
  304.                 Version 2.2.1 changes the TX lockout routine
  305.                 so that instead of requesting status from the
  306.                 Robot it uses a simple timer to determine the
  307.                 TX status.

  309.                 Bill DeWitt W2DD has also pointed out that RH
  310.                 will not handle all of his HiRez (.HRZ)
  311.                 images. It appears that there is a second
  312.                 HiRez image file format that is similar to the
  313.                 GEST C1 format and uses about 138K instead
  314.                 of the (Raw) 184K. Bill is sending me some
  315.                 files for testing and I expect to support
  316.                 the compressed (packed) HiRez files in a 
  317.                 future release.
