  8.     ScanBase is a Windows program that enhances the use
  9.     of your scanner radio.  The problem with most scanners is 
  10.     that once you've entered all your active frequencies it
  11.     is very difficult to remember what each one is.  This is
  12.     especially true of the newer scanners that can hold
  13.     hundreds of frequencies.  Well, ScanBase will remember
  14.     everything you need to know for up to 200 channels on your
  15.     scanner.  Besides keeping a description for each frequency
  16.     ScanBase will help you figure out which channels are active 
  17.     and will also keep track of which channels you've got 
  18.     locked out.

  20.     IMPORTANT -  If you have already been using an earlier
  21.     version of ScanBase be sure to read the UPGRADE.DOC file
  22.     included in SCBASE21.ZIP.

  26.     GETTING STARTED -
  27.  
  28.     ScanBase uses two data files to store all of the
  29.     scanner information.  Copy SCANBASE.DAT and SCANBASE.BNK
  30.     to your Windows directory along with the program file
  31.     SCANBASE.EXE.  ScanBase will not work without both data
  32.     files.  ScanBase is a Visual Basic program and requires
  33.     that VBRUNxxx.DLL be in your Windows path.  VBRUNxx.DLL is
  34.     a MicroSoft run-time file.  VBRUNxx.DLL is freely distributed
  35.     and can be obtained from many computer bulletin boards 
  36.     (including CompuServe).

  38.     Once you have Scanbase installed on your computer
  39.     you can run it just like any other Windows program.  The
  40.     first time you run it you will see the sample data from
  41.     my own scanner.  It is a good idea to play around with the
  42.     sample data before spending the necessary time to enter your
  43.     scanner information.  Feel free to experiment.  None of the
  44.     changes you make will be final unless you press the SAVE 
  45.     button or turn on AUTOSAVE (more about that later).  Pressing
  46.     the RESTORE button will undo any changes since the last save.

  48.     All of the frequency and descriptive information can
  49.     be directly edited by clicking on any text box and entering
  50.     information in the normal manner.  The tab key will move you
  51.     from one box to the next, or you can just use the mouse to  
  52.     select any text box at random.

  54.     If you feel like starting right in on your own data-
  55.     base you can use the CLEAR button to clear all of the sample 
  56.     information.  If you then press SAVE you will write the
  57.     blank info to disk and then you can start entering the data
  58.     from your scanner.  The rest of the documentation includes 
  59.     specific information on each of the controls.

  67.     INDICATOR LIGHTS-
  68.  
  69.     The red and green lights on the left side of the
  70.     screen provide a quick indication of which channels you are
  71.     actually using.  By default both lights are off.  If you
  72.     have entered the frequency information and then get a hit on
  73.     a particular channel pressing the counter button will increment
  74.     the hit count by one and turn on the green light.  If you
  75.     decide to put a channel on lockout (skip) you can turn on
  76.     the red light by clicking on it.  A subsequent hit on the same
  77.     channel will turn the light from red to green.  If you want
  78.     to turn either light on or off manually you can just click on
  79.     the light.

  83.     COUNTERS-

  85.     The counters along the right edge of the screen are
  86.     used to keep track of the hits on each frequency.  As you
  87.     listen to your scanner you can press the appropriate counter
  88.     each time you hear something interesting.  A short period of
  89.     scoring hits will soon show which of your frequencies are
  90.     really active and which ones you might want to think about
  91.     replacing.  Remember, you aren't going to get any hits on a
  92.     frequency that you've got locked out.

  96.     BANKS-

  98.     The row of numbered buttons below the descriptions
  99.     is used to instantly change from one bank to another.  ScanBase
  100.     stores 20 banks of 10 channels each, for a total of 200 channels.

  104.     SEARCH-
  105.  
  106.     Most scanners include a search feature that allows you
  107.     to search through a range of frequencies looking for frequencies
  108.     you may not already know about.  If you are using search mode
  109.     and don't know if the frequency you found is already in your
  110.     scanner you can use the SEARCH button to hunt through your
  111.     database.  The SEARCH button is also a quick way to locate a
  112.     frequency that you already know is in there somewhere.

  116.     CLEAR-
  117.  
  118.     The CLEAR button is used to clear frequency information,
  119.     descriptions, and reset the counters to zero.  The CLEAR button
  120.     will allow you to choose to clear the entire database or just
  121.     one bank at a time.  If you want to clear just one bank use the
  122.     numbered bank button to select the bank first and then press the
  123.     CLEAR button.  If you make a mistake you can press RESTORE to
  124.     get the information back, provided you haven't already saved
  125.     the changes (by pressing SAVE or having AUTOSAVE turned on).

  129.     RESET-

  131.     RESET is similar to CLEAR except that it only changes
  132.     the counters to zero.  Again, you can reset one bank (select the
  133.     bank first) or you can reset all channels.

  137.     RESTORE-

  139.     RESTORE will bring the database back to the point it
  140.     was at the last time you pressed SAVE.  If you have AUTOSAVE
  141.     turned on RESTORE will take you back to the last save (sometime
  142.     within the last few minutes).

  146.     SAVE-

  148.     The SAVE button writes the database to disk.  Once you
  149.     press the SAVE button all changes are final.  If you have entered
  150.     information you don't want to risk losing press SAVE.  You
  151.     should press SAVE before exiting the program to make sure
  152.     your database stays current.

  156.     AUTOSAVE-
  157.  
  158.     If AUTOSAVE is selected from the options menu the
  159.     SAVE button will automatically be activated every couple of
  160.     minutes.  The time interval will vary depending on the speed
  161.     of your computer.  Even with AUTOSAVE turned on you should 
  162.     press SAVE before exiting the program.

  166.     SCAN-

  168.     If SCAN is turned on you will see a scan across any
  169.     activated green lights.  The SCAN option doesn't really do
  170.     anything, it just looks cool.

  174.     TEXT COLOR-
  175.     The TEXT COLOR option allow you to choose the color
  176.     used in the data entry fields.  This is largely aesthetic,
  177.     but may improve the display on some laptops and monochrome
  178.     monitors.

  182.     PRINT-

  184.     PRINT is accessible through the File menu.  You can
  185.     print out the information for one bank or print the entire
  186.     database.  As with RESET and CLEAR you should select the 
  187.     bank number first if you want to print just one bank.
