I agree with all of this as I too have an Alinco DX-70. The noise
blanker has taken alot of heat lately, and yes it is less than ideal.
But, turn it on and the impulse noise does go down. The objection that I
have is that it tends to clip the audio peaks of people with high pitch
audio, thus causing distortion. The second and I think major issue is
the TX power on 6m. I talked to a technican at a ham store who claims
that Alinco uses the driver output for 6m because the final does not
work to 6m. For quite a long time 10w has been the standard on 6m, it
seems that Icom caught Alinco "with its pants down" on this one. I
saw a comment today that the fan runs most of the time on the Icom,
well on the Alinco it runs rarely, and when it does is as quiet as a
whisper. For me, the Icom has not been proven yet, and the $300-350
difference buys me other toys.

The 5100 has only one manual. Mine came with a slip of paper expalining how
to set it up for cross band repeat:
1. Tune both desired frequencies, tones, power levels in on each band.
2. Turn radio off
3. Turn back on while holding the RPT button.
The display will replace the first digit of the freq with a R. To turn
crossband repeat off, turn radio off, do steps 2 & 3 again.
No idea why Yaesu didn't include this function in the manual, but noticed that
Icom did the same with my dualband HT. Perhaps crossband repeat is illegal in
some countries?
Also scan the mods files at the ftp sites (QRZ or Buffalo). You WILL want to
do the mod to have the cooling fan on all the time - I didn't, it cost me my
finals running too hot. Also explains how to set up the front panel
light/dimmer much better than the manual.
