A VERY LARGE AREA IN OHIO FOR MILITARY PRACTICE REFUELING,INTERCEPTS ETC.
GROUPS OF TWO TO FIVE AIRCRAFT HAVE BEEN HEARD.
ON SATURDAYS TUNE IN TO "COFFEE TABLE" A.K.A. "BLUE ASH" NATIONAL GUARD
INTERCEPT CONTROLLERS USING A PORTABLE RADAR LOCATED AT THE GUARD BASE IN
BLUE ASH. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY FREQS (Aggressors and Defenders) ARE:
259.4 & 301.6 UHF A.M.
OTHER TIMES MONITOR 281.4, 239.25, 327.1 AND WAIT UNTIL THEY ARE IN THE
"R" AND TUNE TO THE TACTICAL FREQUENCY THAT THEY ARE GIVEN TO USE BY INDY
CTR. THE PILOTS OFTEN MENTION LANDMARKS SUCH AS ROCKY FORK LAKE. THE
OTHER LOCAL RESTRICTED AREA IS JEFFERSON PROVING GROUNDS IN S.E.INDIANA
USED FOR PRACTICE BOMBING. IN GENERAL ACTIVITY INCREASES TOWARDS WEEK'S
END FOR ALL OF THESE LOCATIONS (SUNDAY AND MONDAY ARE USUALY BORING).
IT HELPS TO KNOW THE CURRENT BAROMETRIC PRESSURE OR "ALTIMETER" WHEN
LISTENING TO THE AIRCRAFT "READBACK" INSTRUCTIONS WHEN YOU ARE UNABLE
TO HEAR THE CTR. THIS IS BECAUSE YOU COULD MOVE TO 298.4 ONLY TO REALIZE
THEY MEANT 29.84" mercury!
I HAVE HAD BEST SUCCESS WITH A RADIO SHACK DISCONE ANTENNA (BECAUSE OF
IT'S WIDE BAND-WIDTH) AND A SHORT (30') RUN OF RG-6 COAXIAL CABLE.
ALTHOUGH THE RESPONSE ROLLS OFF QUICKLY BELOW APPROX. 100 mhz BECAUSE MY
ANTENNA HAS NO EXTRA ELEMENT ABOVE THE DISC. PERHAPS AN ICOM AH-7000 OR
A DIAMOND D-100 WOULD WORK BETTER. THE WIND LOADING ON MY ANTENNA IS NILL
SO I CAN MOUNT IT HIGHER THAN MOST BIGGER ANTENNAS.

I GET A LOT OF GOOD INFO. FROM THE PILOT SHOPS AT SMALL AIRPORTS.
SECTIONAL AERONAUTICAL CHARTS (SUCH AS CINCINNATI, ST LOUIS, ATLANTA)
ARE OK AND SHOW MORE LANDMARKS BECAUSE THEY WERE MEANT TO BE USED FOR
VFR FLIGHT BUT MOSTLY SHOW JUST LOW BAND NAV FREQS.
BUT THE "ENROUTE LOW ALTITUDE MAPS SUCH AS L-21,L22 OR L23,L24 HAVE
MUCH MORE FREQ INFO AND COVER A MUCH LARGER AREA (ALL THE WAY TO THE
EAST COAST) CONSISTING MAINLY OF VECTORS AND CONTROL CENTER BOUNDARYS
THESE AREN'T AS PRETTY TO LOOK AT. HOWEVER,-THEY DO HAVE A WEALTH OF
MAJOR UHF FREQS. ARMED WITH ONE YOU CAN OFTEN TELL A PLANES GENERAL
LOCATION BY THE FREQUENCY IN USE.
REMEMBER THESE FREQS ARE JUST THE MAJOR FAA FREQS AND THEY HAVE MANY
ALTERNATES. YOU CAN QUICKLY FILL UP 100 CHANNELS WITH JUST UHF FREQS.
THE IMPORTANT THING TO NOTE IS THE AMOUNT OF ACTIVITY ON A PARTICULAR
FREQUENCY THEN YOU CAN SCAN LEANER & FASTER AND ONLY BRING IN THOSE
UNUSUAL FREQS. WHEN CALLED FOR BY THE PILOT/CONTROLLER.
THERE ARE ALSO HIGH ALTITUDE CHARTS WHICH COVER AN EVEN BIGGER CHUNK
OF THE USA. I DON'T HAVE ONE OF THESE YET BUT I'LL BET THE FREQ. 278.3
IS ON THE LOCAL MAP BECAUSE THERE IS ALWAYS SOME GUY JUST PASSIN THRU
AT A HIGH ALTITUDE ON THIS FREQUENCY.
MOST MAPS ARE SOLD FOR ABOUT 5 DOLLARS. (NO..YOU DONT HAVE TO BE A
PILOT TO PURCHASE ONE.)
THE FREQUENCY 123.45 IS A LOT LIKE CB-19 USED MOSTLY BY AIR CARGO
PLANES TO CHAT WITH OTHER PILOTS WHILE ENROUTE. THERE ARE SOME GOOD
CONVERSATIONS ON THIS CHANNEL ESPECIALLY WHEN A MAJOR AIRLINE IS IN
THE NEWS! SOMETIMES THEY'LL CLUE YOU IN TO THE POSSIBLE CAUSES OF
THE MISHAP AND MENTION OTHERS WHICH YOU MAY NOT HAVE HEARD OF.
CHECK THIS OUT (Mon-Fri) AROUND 9:30 PM.

IF NOT OUT SAVING LIVES THE PREFIX "HELICOPTER" IS USED; WHEN WORKING TO
SAVE LIVES "LIFEGUARD" LETS THE CONTROLLERS KNOW HE'S IN A HURRY. AT LEAST
ONE AIR CARE DISPATCHER IS AN EX-ATC CONTROLLER. MONITOR DISPATCH UNTIL A
HIGH TONE LOW TONE SEQUENCE AND DISPATCH INFO IS HEARD.
THEN TUNE TO THE PRIMARY AND LISTEN FOR MORE "SCENE" FREQUENCYS WHICH MAY
BE IN USE PRIOR TO LANDING AND THE LANDING COORDINATES.
THE AIR CARE PILOT USES "LORAN-C" NAVIGATION. WITH A MODEST MAP ONE CAN
DETERMINE THE LOCATION OF THE SCENE WHEN ONLY THE COORDINATES ARE GIVEN.
SOMETIMES POLAR COORDINATES ARE USED (A GROUND TRACK AND A DISTANCE) TO
GET HIM STARTED AND THEN THE COORDINATES ARE GIVEN WHEN HE'S ON THE WAY
TO ALLOW HIM TO "HOME IN".
DURING THE RETURN FLIGHT THE DOCTOR ON BOARD USUALLY DESCRIBES THE
PATIENT AND MOST OF THE EVENTS WHICH LED TO HIS/HER INJURYS. THE PILOT
CAN BE TALKING ON VHF WHILE THE DOCTOR IS USING UHF. AIR CARE'S RADIO
HAS CERTAIN PRESET FREQUENCYS (SUCH AS "SIDE A CHANNEL #6") WHICH CAN
BE CALLED FOR BY THE DISPATCHER. WHEN THIS IS DONE TAKE YOUR BEST GUESS
BASED ON THE LOCATION OF THE SCENE. 33.96 IS OFTEN USED IN HAM. COUNTY.
IF YOU FIND THE FREQ. FOR A GIVEN PRESET (SUCH AS "A-6") MAKE A NOTE OF
IT FOR NEXT TIME!
