  19.          INTRODUCTION

  21.          CWT 11.3 is a FREEWARE program. That is, you may copy, distri-
  22.          bute and use it without any restrictions but these:
  23.  
  24.          1. You are not allowed to charge any amount of money for it.
  25.  
  26.          2. All copied files must be handled over in their original form
  27.             and content.
  28.  
  29.          3. You are not allowed to use CWT 11.3 in a business, commercial,
  30.             government, or institutional environment except for evaluation
  31.             purposes.
  32.  
  33.          All texts and graphics of CWT 11.3 are carried out in German,
  34.          support for English or other languages has not been provided.
  35.          Nevertheless you will find the program comparatively easy to
  36.          handle even though you may not speak any German at all. And
  37.          CWT 11.3 offers some special functions not commonly found in
  38.          comparable freeware or shareware programs. Thus it still may
  39.          serve you well to some extend.
  40.  
  41.          The following gives you a brief overview of all files included
  42.          in the original distribution file. Those absolutely mandatory
  43.          for running the program are marked by the letter '*'.

  58.          WHAT CWT 11.3 HAS TO OFFER
  59.  
  60.          CWT 11.3 is a morse code trainer for radio amateurs providing the
  61.          following futures:
  62.  
  63.          - a clearly structured, neither cluttered nor primitive graphic
  64.            user interface closely kept to SAA standards which makes the
  65.            program pleasant and easy to use
  66.  
  67.          - a code generator capable of sending random groups of equal or
  68.            different length, common (German) words, abbreviations for CW
  69.            work, amateur text (automatically generated) and external text
  70.            files
  71.  
  72.          - an integrated editor for creating the latter mentioned text
  73.            files
  74.  
  75.          - a decoder which reads code characters from an externally con-
  76.            nected morse keyer and converts them into readable text (morse
  77.            keyer connected to the parallel port)
  78.  
  79.          - a »bar writer« which reads code characters from an externally
  80.            connected morse keyer and converts them into graphic bars
  81.  
  82.          - a possibility of saving all important configuration parameters
  83.            for later use

  85.          - support of SOUNDBLASTER compatible cards including several sound
  86.            effects like QRM, QRN, QSB and QSD

  90.          EQUIPMENT AND SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  91.  
  92.          - an IBM compatible PC equipped with a 286 series processor or
  93.            higher

  95.          - 450 kB free memory

  99.          - a VGA video adapter
  100.  
  101.          - a parallel port for connecting a morse keyer

  109.          HOW TO INSTALL CWT 11.3
  110.  
  111.          First copy all files into a common directory of your choice. If
  112.          you do not take further measurements you MUST then start the pro-
  113.          gram from within this directory. Otherwise CWT 11.3 will not be able
  114.          to find its files. Alternatively (and certainly more comfortable)
  115.          you may include the following instructions in your AUTOEXEC.BAT:

  123.          Assuming you have copied the files into a directory called »CWT«
  124.          on drive »C:«. In this case you must include:

  132.           If a »PATH« instruction already exists in your AUTOEXEC.BAT and
  133.           assuming the complete instruction to read like this:

  145.           Next reset your computer once. After this has been done you may
  146.           start CWT 11.3 from within any directory whatsoever by just typing
  147.           [CWT] at the DOS command line and pressing <RETURN>.
  148.  
  149.           As CWT 11.3 uses one of the system timers which function is al-
  150.           tered by software you should not try to run the program under
  151.           WINDOWS. But instead you may try run CWT 11.3 from an OS-2 com-
  152.           patibility box. The author has not been able to carry out a suf-
  153.           ficient series of tests because no OS-2 is installed on his com-
  154.           puter, but several users have frequently reported that it works.
  155.           Just be aware of the fact please that some functions of CWT 11.3
  156.           are a bit critical regarding time consumption. For this reason
  157.           you should avoid multitasking operation while running CWT 11.3
  158.           unless your computer is sufficiently fast.

  162.           USING A SOUND CARD
  163.  
  164.           SOUNDBLASTER compatible sound cards are supported. The default
  165.           setting forces CWT 11.3 into using the PC speaker as sound out-
  166.           put device. Thus you first must alter the setting if you have
  167.           a sound card installed and want to use it. This can easily be
  168.           mananged from within the program. Simply open the pull-down me-
  169.           nu named »Einstellen« by pressing <Alt>-<E>. Then move the cur-
  170.           sor to the row called »Blaster« and press <RETURN>. Please note
  171.           that CWT 11.3 automatically checks for a SOUNDBLASTER compatible
  172.           card. If none is detected the »Blaster« row in the above men-
  173.           tioned pull-down menu remains locked. Therefore make sure that
  174.           your sound card is set up properly for SOUNDBLASTER compatibi-
  175.           lity before starting the program. In case of troubles consult
  176.           the manufacturer's manual.

  180.           HOW TO CONNECT A MORSE KEYER
  181.  
  182.           For this purpose your computer must be equipped with a paral-
  183.           lel port. For connecting a keyer get a suitable 25-pole plug
  184.           and carry out the following job:
  185.  
  186.           The morse keyer must be connected to the parallel port by means
  187.           of a one-pole SHIELDED cable. Solder the cable's inner conductor
  188.           to PIN 10 and the shielding braid directly onto the plug's metal
  189.           flange. Both serve as the keyer's lead lines. The following dia-
  190.           gram illustrates the correct connections seen from the plug's
  191.           back.

  202.           In case your computer provides more than one parallel port you
  203.           should choose LPT 1 for connecting the keyer, because by default
  204.           CWT 11.3 assumes the keyer to be connected right there. But if
  205.           desired you may select another port from the menu »Einstellen«.
  206.  
  207.           Please note that there must be NO voltage on the keyer's lead
  208.           line. Therefore only mechanical hand keyers or elbugs with in-
  209.           built, separating relays at their output ports should be used.
  210.           Otherwise some sort of protective hardware interface would be-
  211.           come unavoidable to prevent the port from suffering severe da-
  212.           mage.

  216.           SOME BASIC HINTS
  217.  
  218.           Whenever you start running the program, the generator's window
  219.           will first appear on the screen. In order to start the character
  220.           generation simply press <Space> (called »Leertaste« in German).
  221.  
  222.           All important parameters for keying, group generation, character
  223.           set and sound can, of course, be altered. This can either be done
  224.           by opening the above mentioned pull-down menu »Einstellen« or by
  225.           just pressing the following function keys:

  237.           The <F4> function key is provided for toggling between genera-
  238.           tor and decoder. The bar writer (called »Morseschreiber« in Ger-
  239.           man) can be activated by pressing <F10>. All those other func-
  240.           tions which have not been mentioned here can be figured out
  241.           easily while running the program.

  243.           Of course I am aware that this text is by far too scarcely kept
  244.           to be called a documentation at all. The same by the way is true
  245.           for the German text version simply due to the fact, that all op-
  246.           erating instructions can be obtained from an extensive online
  247.           help system. You may probably not be able to benefit at all from
  248.           the latter but please consider, that CWT 11.3 in its present ap-
  249.           pearance has chiefly been developed to serve the needs of German
  250.           radio amateurs only. And after all, writing any reasonable manual
  251.           or online help in English would certainly be far beyond my capabi-
  252.           lities.
