Kurzweil VOICE for Windows
Release 2.0
READ ME
=================================================================
AUDIO INPUT
1. Confirming Correct Installation
Confirm correct installation by starting Kurzweil VOICE, adding
yourself as a new user, checking sound levels, and adjusting the
microphone gain as needed. Confirm proper operation by dictating
to the system. Follow these steps:
A. Start Kurzweil VOICE. Add your name to the user list as a new
user. Read the initial help dialog, and press OK. The Start User
screen appears. Select your name from the start user screen and
press OK. If a dialog appears saying "VOICE cannot control the
microphone gain," you will have to perform step C3, below.
B. Complete a sound levels check. If the sound levels meter
does not respond to your voice during the sound levels check,
refer to "Troubleshooting a deaf microphone" in on-line help
(search on the keyword "microphone"). To perform a sound levels
check, follow the prompts on the screen. They will tell you
to record four seconds of silence and to say nine words, "testing
one two three...six seven eight."
C. Adjust the Microphone Gain as Needed:
1. If the difference between the level of silence and the level
of your voice is not greater than two ticks on the sound levels meter,
press the Mike Gain button and raise the gain.
2. If the sound levels meter doesn't respond to your voice (even
after you've raised the gain), check the following:
- Make sure the microphone plug is connected to the microphone
jack on your sound board.
- If a microphone gain button is present in the Sound Levels dialog,
press it, and raise the gain by a couple of ticks.
3. If the gain button is not present, the microphone gain must be
set outside of Kurzweil VOICE. See "Adjusting the Microphone Gain
Outside of Kurzweil Voice" in on-line help (search on the keyword
"microphone").
4. If you still can't get a proper sound levels check, record a
test sentence using the sound recorder icon in the Accessories
program group to check the output sound quality of your sound
board. See the Troubleshooting section of the Kurzweil VOICE
Installation Card or see "Checking Sound Board Fidelity" in on-line
help for this procedure.
D. Dictate to Notepad using Kurzweil VOICE. When the microphone
indicator is green, say "open-notepad." Kurzweil VOICE may appear
deaf for a few seconds as the system initializes. After Notepad
opens, dictate a test sentence. If you experience problems,
record a test sentence using the procedure outlined in the
Troubleshooting section of the Kurzweil VOICE Installation Card.
2. Sound Board Compatibility
Extensive steps have been taken to assure that Kurzweil VOICE is
compatible with the widest possible range of Sound Blaster
16-compatible and 16-bit Windows-compatible sound boards. If you
experience recognition difficulty or find that the microphone
doesn't hear anything you say, the problem may be due to one of
the following:
A. Incorrect microphone gain. Because of the variations in
microphone gain among sound boards, Kurzweil VOICE's default
microphone gain setting may be incorrect for your sound board. If
recognition appears to be poor or erratic the first time you use
Kurzweil VOICE, see "Adjusting Microphone Gain Inside Kurzweil
VOICE" in on-line help for information about correcting the problem
(search on keyword "microphone").
B. Nonconforming sound board. You should be able to use Kurzweil
VOICE to control your microphone gain, but if your sound board
does not conform to accepted Windows conventions, you may need to
refer to "Adjusting Microphone Gain Outside Kurzweil VOICE" in
on-line help for information about correcting the problem (search on
keyword "microphone").
C. Insufficient power from the sound board. The Telex Nomad
Noise-Cancellation microphone that comes with Kurzweil VOICE
requires power from the sound board. If your microphone doesn't
hear anything you say, see "Troubleshooting a deaf microphone" in
on-line help (search on keyword "microphone").
KNOWN PROBLEMS AND WORKAROUNDS IN KURZWEIL VOICE 2.0
1. Windows 95 Network Clients
When performing a client install onto Windows 95, the server directory must
be mapped to a drive letter. This is accomplished by highlighting the
desired server directory in the Windows 95 Network Neighborhood program and
then using the "Map Network Drive ..." command from the File menu. You
should run setup from this mapped server directory (for example,
S:\<server>) and then select the mapped client directory (for example,
S:\<server>\clients\<client>), where <server> is the server directory name
and <client> is the client directory name. Absolute Windows 95 directory
names such as \\SERVER\<server> and \\SERVER\<server>\clients\<client> are
not yet functional.
2. Untrained and Unnormalized Commands
You'll find that some commands included with Kurzweil VOICE 2.0 are untrained
and appear with red diamonds in the Active Words window. You will have to
train these words from the Active Words window before you can say them.
Also, you will find some commands that do not follow the new spelling
normalization guidelines of lower case words separated by hyphens (for
example, "file-open" is correct, but "File Open" is not). These commands
will function properly.
3. Active Words Window
Occasionally, the Active Words window continues to display the
"Listen-To-Me" word list, even after the "listen-to-me" command has been
recognized and acted upon. If you switch focus to another application or
to Kurzweil VOICE, this problem will be corrected.
4. "Say" Command in the Active Words Window
In the Active Words window, do not select the "Say" command from the pop-up
menu because Kurzweil VOICE may crash. If this occurs, please restart
Kurzweil VOICE and continue. To avoid this, you can double-click
on the item in the Active Words window or access the "Say" command from the
Edit menu of the Active Words window.
5. Windows for Workgroups 3.11 Network Clients
Creating, loading and saving user profiles to and from Windows For Workgroups
FW 3.11 network clients can take minutes on slow networks. Performing a
client install over this network is very slow.
6. Switching Vocabularies in a Network Environment
The vocabulary switching feature in Setup does not check to see if the user
profile is locked, and does not lock the user profile while switching it.
You should be sure that no client machine is using a user profile when
switching vocabularies. You should also be sure that no client machine
tries to use the user profile while switching vocabularies.
7. Accessing Help Files in a Network Environment
The system administrator must set the security permissions of the Kurzweil
VOICE file KV.GID to 'No Access'. This is a hidden file in the server
directory. This file appears after one invocation of Kurzweil VOICE Help.
Failure to change these permissions will only allow one client at a time to
access Kurzweil VOICE Help.
8. Disk drive spinning during Setup
You may hear prolonged spinning of the disk drive during your setup of
Kurzweil VOICE. Do not be concerned; it is part of the mechanics of the
Install Shield.
9. Kurzweil VOICE Control Menu and DOS box
You cannot speak to the DOS box under either Windows 3.1 or Windows 95.
You also cannot manipulate Kurzweil VOICE control menus with the
Kurzweil VOICE Mouse or by voice. Kurzweil VOICE will stop responding.
You should raise the control menu by pressing the escape key or clicking
outside of the control menu with the mouse.
10. System Modal dialogs
You cannot speak to system modal dialogs using Kurzweil VOICE. For
example, you cannot say "OK" or "Cancel" to the "This will end your
Windows session" prompt. You must use the keyboard or mouse.
11. Application Menu and Dialog Tracking
Occasionally Kurzweil VOICE will encounter a menu or dialog which
it cannot track. Either it can't obtain the contents, or some extraneous
commands will be obtained from the menu or dialog. Thus, you may see some
unexpected commands in the Active Words window. These menus and dialogs can
normally be controlled using a combination of the arrow commands, tab-key
and enter-key. One example of a menu which Kurzweil VOICE cannot track is
the right mouse button menu under Windows 95.
FEATURES AND APPLICATION NOTES
1. Open-Application Paths
If you can't launch your application with the "open-" command, you may
need to edit the command.
Using the Active Words window, find the open command for your application
in the Open-Applications list and edit it. Choose the BROWSE button or
type the full path name of the executable in the "Command Line" window.
Example: The "open-word" command assumes the Word for Windows executable,
winword.exe, is installed in c:\msoffice\winword\ as part of the Microsoft
Office. However, anyone who has installed WORD for Windows as a
stand-alone application will have installed winword.exe in c:\winword\.
In that event, edit the command line for "open-word" to read
c:\winword\winword.exe.
If you have voice-enabled a new application, the new open-application
command should switch to an already running copy of the application
rather than launching a new copy. Under Windows 3.1, some open-application
commands will launch a second copy of the application. This problem can be
addressed by editing the open-application command and filling in the Alias
field with the module name. The module name is displayed in the right most
field of the Kurzweil VOICE Center window's status bar when the application
gets focus.
2. Changing Kurzweil VOICE System Files Using a Text Editor
When you add or edit commands using the Active Words window, Kurzweil VOICE
automatically formats these commands in Kurzweil VOICE .voc and .kvv system
files. If you are forced to edit .voc or .kvv files using a text editor
(Notepad or Wordpad), you must insert an asterisk after the equal sign. The
edited entry must be left justified. For example:
"MY ADDRESS" =* "123 Main St.", , TEXT, Y, N
3. Kurzweil VOICE 2.0 No Longer Supports the Following Applications.
123 version 4.01 Microsoft Forms 1.0
Lotus Ami Pro 3.0 Microsoft Access 1.10
Lotus Approach 2.1 Microsoft Office 4.0
Lotus cc:Mail 2.0 Lotus Notes 3.1
Lotus cc:Mail 2.1 Novell Office 4.0a

Lotus FreeLance Graphics 2.01 Novell Presentations 2.0
Frame 4.02 Borland Quattro Pro 5.0
Harvard Graphics 2.0 Intuit Quicken 3.0
Lotus Improv 2.1 Microsoft Word 6.0
4. Voice Enabling Kurzweil VOICE Help
There are some buttons and tabs which you cannot speak to in on-line Help. These
will require the use of the keyboard or mouse.
5. PowerPoint Slides
When initially inserting text into a PowerPoint slide, you may have to click
outside of the slide and then back into the it, before being able to dictate.
6. Word Perfect 6.0a
If you are running Word Perfect 6.0a, you will have to edit the KV31.INI file
or the KV95.INI file. To make the edits, find the following lines:
wpwin61=wp61
;wpwin60a=wp61
and make the following changes:
;wpwin61=wp61
wpwin60a=wp61
Open Word Perfect 60A and start Kurzweil VOICE. Open the Active Words Window.
Choose Edit from the Active Words Window Menu and then choose the Application Editor
Change the delete character for Word Perfect 60A from {BACKSPACE} to the two
characters {LEFT}{DELETE}.
7. PowerPoint 7
Microsoft has acknowledged a problem in the initial release of PowerPoint 7
that prevents Kurzweil VOICE from detecting this application. They have
assured us that an upcoming release will address the problem.
8. Shortcut Toolbars
If you run the Kurzweil VOICE Tutor via the Program Manager at the same
time as a Shortcut Toolbar, the colors and fonts of the Tutor will become
distorted and the Tutor may crash. You should exit any Shortcut Toolbars
before running the Tutor.
9. Microsoft Word ToolTips
In Windows 3.1x, if Toolbars are configured so they show ToolTips for each
button, and the mouse is over a toolbar button, you will not be able to
dictate into your document until you click on either a Word menu, or the
Kurzweil VOICE Center window.
10. Enrollment Calculation and Screen Savers
Disable your screen saver and other applications before beginning
enrollment. Enrollment calculations slow down considerably if a screen
saver interrupts them. Calculations should take a couple of hours
without a screen saver active.
11. Tutorials
Kurzweil VOICE does not work well with the following tutorials:
Microsoft Windows
Microsoft PowerPoint
Microsoft Access
Lotus Freelance Graphics
These tutorials take over the screen, mouse and keyboard, and assume that
users will run the tutorial to completion before activating other
applications. Also, WordPerfect Coaches have dialogs which require mouse
input (i.e., the keyboard and voice input will not work).
CONFIGURATION
1. Memory Requirements
For the 30,000 word vocabulary option, you will need at least 8MB of
DEDICATED RAM. For the 60,000 word vocabulary option, you will need at
least 16 MB of DEDICATED RAM. This does not include the memory required
for the Windows operating system and your applications. Your applications
and the operating system typically require 8 MB of RAM. Consequently, you
will need a total of 16 MB of RAM for the 30,000 word vocabulary option,
or a total of 24 MB of RAM for the 60,000 word vocabulary option.
2. Swap File Size
Under Windows 3.1x, be sure that your Swap file has at least 18 MB and is
permanent. Under Windows 95, be sure that your have at least 20 MB of free
disk space prior to performing enrollment.
3. 16 MBs of RAM
If you have 16 MBs of RAM on your PC, you CAN only use the 30K
vocabulary. Please remember to install this vocabulary on 16 MBs PCs.
However, if you intend to upgrade your RAM at some later point, you may
install the 60,000 word vocabulary option, even though you will not be
allowed to create a 60,000 word vocabulary user.
4. If the Kurzweil VOICE Tutor is mute or too quiet
Sound output is not available for the Kurzweil VOICE Tutor on the
following configurations: Windows 3.1x with Sound Blaster 16 compatible
sound boards; Windows 3.1x with the IBM Windsurfer sound board.
If you are using a configuration other than those above, the .WAV playback
volume control on your sound board mixer may be set too low. To diagnose
this, try playing the .WAV files in the Kurzweil VOICE Tutor directory with
the Windows Sound Recorder. If they sound too soft with the Windows Sound
Recorder, they will sound too soft with the Kurzweil VOICE Tutor. You
should raise the .WAV playback volume control to hear sound output with the
Kurzweil VOICE Tutor.
