  6. OVERVIEW
  7. ========

  9. Welcome to this international freeware release of PGP 5.0, commonly
  10. referred to as PGP 5.0i.  This archive contains PGP 5.0i binaries
  11. for Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0.  The source code is available in
  12. another archive named pgp50i-win95nt-src.zip.
  13.  
  14. The binaries contained in this archive are compiled from source code
  15. that was published in the following books by PGP, Inc.:

  42. The books were exported from the USA in accordance with the US Export
  43. Regulations, and the pages were then scanned and OCRed to make the
  44. source available in electronic form.

  46. More than 70 people from all over Europe worked for over 1000 hours
  47. to make this release possible.  We are pleased to be able to present
  48. a PGP version that is 100% legal to use outside the USA, because no
  49. source code was exported in electronic form.

  52. you start using PGP 5.0i.

  55. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN US AND INTERNATIONAL VERSION
  56. ================================================
  57.  
  58. The following changes have been made to the source code after it has
  59. been scanned in order to produce this version of PGP:
  60.  
  61.   1. The version number has been suffixed with an 'i' (for
  62.      'international')
  63.   2. The default keyserver has been changed from pgpkeys.mit.edu
  64.      to horowitz.surfnet.nl
  65.   3. The splash screen has been updated to reflect the new version
  66.

  68. DOCUMENTATION
  69. =============

  71. The file pgp50manual.pdf contains the PGP User's Guide for
  72. Windows 95/NT.  The manual is in PDF format, so you will probably
  73. need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view or print it.  Adobe Acrobat can

  85. INSTALLATION
  86. ============
  87.  
  88. Installation is usually straight-forward.  Just run Setup.exe and follow
  89. the instructions.
  90.  
  91. IF YOU HAVE BEEN RUNNING PGP 5.0 AND YOU WANT TO SWITCH TO PGP 5.0i
  92. THEN COPY YOUR SECRING.SKR AND PUBRING.PKR BEFORE UN-INSTALLING PGP 5.0
  93. BECAUSE THE UNINSTALL OF PGP 5.0 DELETES THESE KEYRINGS AND A PREVIOUSLY
  94. GENERATED KEY MIGHT GET LOST.
  95.  
  96. NOTE: If you have previously installed PGP 5.0, Windows may be locking
  97. many of the DLLs you need to update.  To unlock the DLLs:
  98.  
  99.   Exit any applications that may be using PGP (this includes PGPkeys,
  100.     PGPtray, Eudora, Exchange and Windows Explorer).
  101.  
  102.   If you're running Windows 95:
  103.     Ensure that you have an MSDOS window open.
  104.     Select Start/Shutdown
  105.     On the resulting dialog box, hold down control, alt and shift, and
  106.       simultaneously left-click "No."  This will shutdown the Windows
  107.       desktop.
  108.  
  109.   On all Windows platforms:
  110.     Enter the MSDOS window, and delete the following files:
  111.       c:\windows\system\pgpwctx.dll
  112.       c:\windows\system\pgp.dll
  113.  
  114.   On Windows 95:
  115.     To get your desktop back, execute:
  116.       explorer
  117.     Windows may complain about missing files (especially PGPtray); do
  118.       not accept any programs it finds as possible matches.  This
  119.       problem will be resolved after you finish installing PGP 5.0i.

  122. IMPORTANT, LAST-MINUTE RELEASE NOTES
  123. ====================================
  124.  
  125. 1) The Eudora plugin that is shipped with PGP 5.0 is not included in
  126. this release, because the .rc file necessary to build the plugin was
  127. missing from the source code books.  The Eudora plugin will be included
  128. in a later release.
  129.  
  130. 2) RSA key generation is not supported in this version.  If you want to
  131. generate RSA keys, use PGP 2.6.3i instead or download the source code
  132. (pgp50i-win95nt-src.zip) and build PGP 5.0i for Personal Privacy.
  133.  
  134. 3) Using Microsoft Word as your editor in Outlook is not currently
  135. supported.  The Exchange/Outlook Plug-in will not be available in Word.
  136. Switching your editor back to the Outlook editor will correct the issue.

  139. TECHNICAL DETAILS
  140. =================
  141.  
  142. The pages were scanned using HP ScanJet 4+ and Agfa StudioScan IIsi
  143. flatbed scanners and OmniPage Pro 7.0 OCR software.
  144.  
  145. The printed books contained line and page checksums to help
  146. validating the accuracy of the scanned code.  After the pages were
  147. scanned, they were proof-read and any errors corrected until the
  148. checksums agreed.  Because of this, you can be quite sure that no
  149. errors have been introduced into the files on their way from paper
  150. to electronic form, and that the files in this archive are
  151. (practically) identical to the original files, as published by PGP,
  152. Inc.
  153.  
  154. The source code books also contained a list of MD5 and SHA hashes for
  155. all the files, to make it easier to validate each file.  However,
  156. because the checksum algorithm used in the first edition of the
  157. source code books (from which most of the files have been scanned)
  158. does not take whitespace into consideration, we have not always been
  159. able to reproduce files that are 100% identical to the originals.
  160. They differ only in that they contain too many or too few spaces or
  161. TABs (which are irrelevant to the compiler anyway); apart from that
  162. they are identical to the originals.  Sadly, the MD5 and SHA hashes
  163. are sensitive to whitespace, so only a few of the files in this
  164. archive produce the same hashes as the originals. :-(
