Dear Jon Persky Games Users,
Some dissapointing facts lead me to write this text file today.
I REALLY hope that you find Target to be a fun and enjoyable game.
In version 3.0 I have added even more to it to try and make it a better
quality Windows program, with automatic help and savable options. However,
because nobody is registering my games, this go-round may be the last. I
have made 6 games for Windows since July, and uploaded them to 4 different
gamer's and programming forums on the CompuServe Information Service. I am
happy to report that at this rate my games will soon surpass 1500 downloads,
and that is about 1500 times as many as I thought I would get. <g> But what
I haven't heard from was 1500 people. I doubt that this game doesn't look
uninviting, in about a week 350 people downloaded Target v.2.1 from the
Windows Advanced Forum. However, NOBODY has been kind enough to send me a
registration fee. I don't know how other shareware authors make out, but
frankly, 0 for 1500 reminds me of my Little League years!
And only 3 people have sent me an E-mail about the games. One was
about how to solve 23 Pickup, another about about how to find the
VBRUN100.DLL file, and the other about the bug in Switch. I accidentally let
Switch v.1.2 go online with a serious bug in it, and out of the 50 or so
people who downloaded it, only one wrote to tell me about it, and that was
about three weeks after it went online and about a week after I had
discovered the bug myself. I'm happy to say that Switch 2.0 is picking up
some downloads now.
Let me personally say that the $5 registration fee I am asking for
is the lowest I have seen on any shareware game. If you enjoy and use the
game once or more a week, it is reason enough to register. Many shareware
games I've downloaded were considerably inferior in quality to this game and
still the author wanted $20 or more, and usually all you receive upon
registration is a decrease in your savings. However, remember that I am
promising to send you a disk with all the latest versions of my shareware
games. That means if you have What's My Number? 1.0 and register it, you'll
get What's My Number? 3.0 on registration and with it the latest versions of
the other 5 games. After disk and postage costs, this leaves only a couple
of bucks in my pocket. Registering electronically on CompuServe (GO SWREG)
is even easier, although it will cost you an extra $1. CompuServe takes 15%
out of your $6 registration (this is about 90ó) for processing costs, so I
am left with the original amount plus a dime (I'll make a real important
phone call with it <g>). When you GO SWREG, simply search for registration
#256 (games 1-6 go in order for my games; What's My Number, Game #1 is ID
#253, Jeopardy Scorekeeper, Game #6 is ID #258, so Target, Game #4, is ID
#256. I can't control the extra charge, it just wouldn't make sense to get a
lower registration fee just because the registrar did it online.
Also, I am working on another non-game application, The Periodic
Table (see section XII.B in the TARGET.TXT file.) When I complete that, I'll
throw it in with the package. The other applications in section XII.C of
TARGET.TXT are just distant ideas, it may be months before I finally get
around to it. But if I have them ready, they'll go on the disk too.
You've probably seen registration pitches in other programs saying
"registering will encourage the author to produce more games for your use."
Well, I'm just about starting to get discouraged. Now I know how a BBS sysop
feels after users just download and give nothing back in return.
If you register, or for any reason you decide not to register, a
quick E-mail to CompuServe ID# 70661,700 or note to my address (see below)
would be appreciated. If you didn't like the game, tell me why, and I'll
appreciate your criticism and consider using it toward the next version that
might be worth registering for you. In the meantime, I am running out of
excuses to keep going. Visual Basic programming is just a hobby, and I have
just started my sophomore year of high school and have several hours of
nightly obligation to chemistry, Spanish, algebra, history, and English,
not to mention getting some trumpet practice in once in a while.
If this text file hasn't been annoying enough, wait until I include
a *.WAV file with a personal "Please Register Me!" voice message imitating
Apu, the Quickie-Mart guy! (I'm just kidding, I don't have Sound Blaster!)
Whatever you do, please enjoy Target 3.0! It's better than ever, and
you'll find you'll use it enough to register it 20 times. <g>
That's all, have fun! (And try the all-new mystery throw!)
Jon :-)
