  1. XL-Recover version 1.1
  2.  
  3. This application allows you to recover Excel spreadsheets that have
  4. been corrupted.  If attempting to open your spreadsheet in Excel
  5. results in the message "Unable to read file," Recover can probably help.  
  6. Recover is not guaranteed to salvage every bit of data, but will try
  7. to create a copy of the spreadsheet that Excel will open.
  8.  
  9. Using Recover is simple: double click on the application's icon and after
  10. reading the information screen, pull down the File menu and select Open.
  11. You'll see a dialog box prompting you to select a spreadsheet file for
  12. recovery.  After you select your spreadsheet, a second dialog box will
  13. prompt for a new name for the fixed version of the file.

  15. A progress indicator will show how much of your file has been processed,
  16. as well as what portions have been recovered or rejected.  At any time,
  17. you can pull down the "File" menu and select "Quit" to terminate the recover
  18. process.  When the processing is complete, a dialog box will appear prompting
  19. you to click on "Okay" to continue.  The file created by Recover will most
  20. likely be missing some information that was stored in your spreadsheet,
  21. and could even have some corrupt information.  It is your responsibility to
  22. determine how much data is lost, and the accuracy of the data that is recovered.

  41. Advanced user information:
  42.  
  43. The "Configure" option in the "File" menu offers further control over how
  44. Recover processes your spreadsheet.  The choices you'll see there are:
  45.  
  46.     1.  Dump discarded records to file "XL-Recover log"
  47.     2.  Dump all records to log file
  48.     3.  Strip document protection
  49.     4.  Strip external references
  50.     5.  Beep when processing is done
  51.     6.  Strip records prior to rejected records
  52.     7.  Strip all data records
  53.     8.  Strip index record
  54.     9.  Strip formats
  55.     10. Strip formulas
  56.     11. Strip dimensions
  57.     12. Strip notes
  58.     13. Strip arrays
  59.  
  60. 1.  Dump discarded records to file "XL-Recover log"
  61.  
  62.     This option will create or overwrite a file called "XL-Recover log", and
  63.     put into it text descriptions of any records that are rejected or stripped.
  64.     Rejected records are the pieces of your file that are too corrupt to keep.
  65.     Stripped records are those you specify to be removed according to other
  66.     selections made in the configure dialog.
  67.  
  68.     The log file can be used to get a general indication of what data was lost.
  69.     It is by no means a complete description of the file or the missing data.

  71. 2.  Dump all records to log file
  72.  
  73.     This option will add all good records to the "XL-Recover log" file described
  74.     above.
  75.  
  76. 3.  Strip document protection
  77.  
  78.     If you have set document password protection and locked cells in a spreadsheet,
  79.     this option will allow you to unprotect the spreadsheet when you forget your
  80.     password.
  81.     
  82.     Note:  File protection (selected in the save as...) dialog of Excel cannot be 
  83.     removed.  If this kind of protection is present, Recover will stop processing
  84.     the file, since no data can be read without a password.
  85.  
  86. 4.  Strip external references
  87.  
  88.     This option removes links to other spreadsheets.  
  89.     
  90.     ** If you have trouble with a recovered file hanging when Excel tries to open
  91.     it, you should try removing external references.
  92.     
  93. 5.  Beep when processing is done
  94.  
  95.     Since some files take quite a while to process, you may wish the Mac to beep
  96.     upon completion.
  97.  
  98. 6.  Strip records prior to rejected records
  99.  
  100.     This option removes the last record prior to an area of file corruption.  It's
  101.     possible for Recover to mistake a bad record as acceptable.  This option depends
  102.     on the fact that errored records tend to be adjacent to one another in order to
  103.     provide additional filtering.
  104.     
  105.     This option will result in less recovered data, so it should be used only if
  106.     necessary.

  108.     ** If you have trouble with Excel still declaring a file is unopenable even
  109.     after recovery, you should try again with this option enabled.

  111. 7.  Strip all data records
  112.  
  113.     Removes all data from cells (and any formats set on individual cells).
  114.  
  115. 8.  Strip index record
  116.  
  117.     Removes the index record, which Excel will automatically rebuild when the 
  118.     recovered file is opened.  This feature is normally enabled.
  119.     
  120. 9.  Strip formats
  121.  
  122.     Removes format records which apply to multiple cells.
  123.     
  124. 10. Strip formulas
  125.  
  126.     Removes formula cells, and their current value.  All arrays will also be stripped.
  127.     
  128. 11. Strip dimensions
  129.  
  130.     Removes the record which marks the highest row and column accessed.
  131.     
  132.     ** If you've got spreadsheets that scrolling to the right or bottom
  133.     moves you far beyond the bounds of your data, strip this record, and
  134.     Excel will recalculate the dimensions.

  136. 12. Strip notes
  137.  
  138.     Removes cell notes.
  139.  
  140. 13. Strip arrays
  141.  
  142.     Removes formula arrays, and their current value.
