I tried e-mail, but I guess it didn't get through to you. Here's the
info on putting the buffer chip in. It IS a stock 32K x 8 SRAM. Now that
we can add a 32K buffer for under $15, does anyone have a way to
download fonts to the printer? The "l" and "1" are too similar on most
of the KX-P1124's fonts for my taste.
I've had the 32K buffer installed in my KX-P1124 for about 2-3 weeks,
and it works great. I got it from Jameco for about $12.00. And without
futher ado.......
(Well maybe a _little_ more ado. Just a note that Larry Howard (who I
got this from) called Panasonic, and their tech department gave him a song
and dance about a custom-built special-purpose buffer chip made
exclusivly for Panasonic, and obtainable only through them, for a mere
$69.95. :-)

Subject: Re: Wanted: Memory chip used in Panasonic Printers
Larry,
You're in luck. I just picked this up from a local BBS about two weeks ago.
I bought the chip locally, but I'm sure you can get it where you are. If not,
the instructions tell you where you can get it. I installed it in my
KX-P1124 and it works just fine.
Cheers!

TITLE: Panasonic 1124 printer memory upgrade....
To upgrade the 1124 buffer from the standard 6K to 32K:
Panasonic sells the 32K upgrade chip for $60. Turns out you can do it
yourself for about $12. All you do is plug in a standard 32Kx8 CMOS static
RAM chip. Steps involved are:
1. Purchase a 32Kx8 Low Power (CMOS) static ram, 120 nsec or better.
I bought Hitachi 62256LP-12 from Microprocessors Unlimited, Beggs
Oklahoma (918-267-4961) for $12 each.
2. Unplug printer, remove paper, etc.
3. Open front single page feed door, then GENTLY pry the front
faceplate off the printer by inserting a screwdriver in the
vertical seam that is about 1/2 behind front face. (The faceplate
is the portion above door which contains the selector panel and
KX-P1124 logo). Be careful not to damage the ribbon cable and
wire connected to front control panel.
4. After faceplate is removed 3 brass phillips head screws holding on
top shell are exposed. Remove them and lift off top shell -- it
hinges at back. You have to pull off the knob on right side of
printer to get it all off.
5. Looking down in printer from the front there is one -- and only one --
socket suitable for holding the ram chip. It is near the back one or
two inches inboard of signal cable connector. The number 1 pin
position is painted on PC board beside the socket. Install RAM chip.
6. Reverse steps 4 to 1 to close up printer. You've now got a 32K
buffer, which can also be used to hold downloaded fonts if desired.
