A-Label V0.84
by
Shawn M. Cyr
Welcome to "A-Label" V0.84. This is the first release of a
utility to create, print, and store mailing labels for dot matrix
printers. This version of "A-Label" is being distributed as
shareware. The registration donation that I ask is only $3.00.
I urge you to consider supporting shareware authors to continue
to bring you utilities, such as mine, or full-blown programs.
In my case, the shareware fee will allow me to keep track of
"A-label's" distribution. This alone will determine if much
needed enhancements will completed.
Installing "A-Label"
Alright, enough soapbox talk. "A-Label" is simple to use
and requires (I hope) little instruction on how to operate. You
must first rename "hi.library" as "hisoftbasic.library." Put the
hisoftbasic.library and the arp.library (unless you
already have them) in the "Libs:" directory of you boot disk.
For example I issue the following command sequence.
COPY DFx:hisoftbasic.library TO SYS:LIBS/hisoftbasic.library
COPY DFx:arp.library TO SYS:LIBS/arp.library
Where "x" denotes the drive number such as "DF0:" or "DF1:" or
where those libraries are currently residing. You can put "A-
Label" anywhere you want but the library files must be on the
boot disk.
Starting "A-Label"
To start "A-Label," simply double-click on its icon. Or
issue the command "RUN A-Label" from within the Command Line
Interface (CLI). A blank window will open. To use "A-Label" you
must select options from the two pull-down menus. You may be
alarmed to find the "Print" function "ghosted." You very well
cannot print a label until it is loaded or created now can you?
As soon as you perform one of the above functions, the "Print"
function will happily become available. "A-Label" uses the
standard Amiga printer escapes codes, so any preferences printer
(dot matrix) will operate correctly. Laser printers are not
currently supported due to the nature of the laser paper media.
Creating a Label
Creating a label takes no more effort than to select "New"
from the menu. You may type up to five lines of data. A white
rectangle will appear in the upper-left of the screen. This
rectangle is a representation of the label. Now start typing
away your label. Be careful not to exceed the end of the white
triangle even though "A-Label" will allow you to do this. Press
"Return" or "Enter" after each line. If you are done typing your
label and you didn't use all five lines, keep pressing "Return"
or "Enter". You will see a line in the middle of your screen
asking you if your label is correct. Reply with an "Y" or "N".
A "Y" reply will make the question disappear. Your label is now
ready to print, save, or do nothing. A "N" response will blank
the screen as if you had just started the program.
Loading a Label
You may also load an existing label. "A-Label" uses the
"ARP" file requester so you must have the ARP.library in your
boot disk's "LIBS" directory. Selecting "Open" from the menu
produces the file requester which is self explanatory.
Saving a Label
You may save you newly created label by choosing the "Save
As" option from the pull-down menu. The save option uses the
same file requester as the "Open" function so it should be self
explanatory. Saving a label will produce an icon for it in the
same directory as "A-Label" itself.
Quitting "A-Label"
Leaving "A-Label" is very simple. You may either choose
"Quit" from the menu or use the "Close" gadget in the upper left-
land corner of the screen. Note that "A-Label" will not allow
you to quit the program while typing in a line of label data. It
will however quit the program as soon as you press "Return" or
"Enter."
Coming Attractions
If there is enough support, I will improve "A-Label." These
updates will only be available to registered users. There will
be no charge for updates if you send me a blank disk. Otherwise,
a $2.75 charge will be levied to compensate for the cost of a
disk. I will notify all registered users of any updates. Be
sure to include your address. For even quicker response , if you
belong to People Link or GEnie, include those addresses as well.
Scheduled improvements include:
More label sizes
Better menu support- Amiga "Hot" keys
Improved file system- More than one label to a file.
Support of Printer Preferences- Elite, Pica, Fine.
I will try to incorporate those as well as other improve-
ments in the next release. Remember to send in your suggestions.
Endnotes
That's it. A rather simple utility that I prefer to keep in
my utilities drawer on the WorkBench disk. Of course you may put
it anywhere, including the erase head of your disk drive. I
welcome any and all constructive comments about "A-Label" at the
home address and electronic mail boxes below. Please tell me the
program and version in any correspondence. Thank You!
