Net BattleShip
Net BattleShip is a version of the classic naval strategy game brought to the
network. You can have up to 10 players join in a single game, each maintains
their own flotilla of ships, each taking turns shooting at any of the other
players screens. Net BattleShip monitors the action, recording hits, and
keeping all players updated with the action.
To play Net BattleShip, you must be on a network that supports file sharing.
You can use Windows for Workgroups or Win95 file sharing also. The file
NETBS.EXE and the sound files *.WAV must be placed into a shared directory
available to all players, with read and write access. Each player needs to
have a program item (or shortcut in Win95) set to run the NETBS.EXE in this
shared directory or folder.
Each player launches NETBS.EXE from their own computer, enter their name,
and press the 'Accept' button. The playing field appears as a grid of water,
with five warships displayed in the top, left area. Each player must set
their ships in valid locations on this grid, ships cannot overlap, hang off
the edge, or run diagonally. To change the orientation of a ship from either
vertical to horizontal or horizontal to vertical, press the RIGHT mouse
button with the cursor over the ship. Once all ships have been positioned,
the player presses the 'Start' button. The player at the top of the column
of buttons is the Admiral, when the Admiral presses 'Start', the game is then
closed to new entrants and no more players may join in (as each player enters
their name and presses 'Accept', they are registered in that game until the
Admiral presses 'Start').
Once all players have pressed 'Start', the light next to the Admirals button
turns green, signifying that it is that players turn to shoot. Players take
turns shooting by selecting a grid to shoot at (use the player buttons on the
right), placing the center of the crosshairs on a button on the grid, and left
clicking with the mouse. The results of the shot are played out and the
button turns to either empty ocean or burning oil. Play continues to the next
player with the green light. If a player scores a hit, their score counter
will increase by 1. The sinking of a ship is not indicated in any way, nor
does the player shooting the sinking shot get any more points than 1 for the
hit. If a players entire flotilla is sunk, that players light will turn red
and they will no longer be able to shoot. The last player with floating ships
is the winner.
This shareware version of Net BattleShip is limited to 5 minutes of play time,
enough time to try the game with as many players as you would like, to score
hits and feel the thrill of naval battles, but not enough time to play a full
game to conclusion. The $15.00 registration fee will remove this time
restriction and provide you with free unlimited technical support and
notification of upgrades and other products offered by Dynamic Application
Programming. To avoid the $3.00 shipping and handling fee, use Compuserves
Software Registration, SWREG #14157.
