Unlike some other books, Proverbs makes
explicit statements on authorship. The first
sentence professes not only to describe its
contents, but also to make known its author:
"The Proverbs of Solomon, son of David, King
of Israel".
There are many differing theories as to
the meaning of this introductory phrase, but
there is no reasonable alternative to the
suggestion that Solomon was either the author
or collector of the contents of the book in
its original form. However, it is clear that
he was not the sole author of the book as we
now have it, nor was he the sole collector.
The section starting at 25:1 says that
Solomon was the author but that "the men of
Hezekiah King of Judah copied it out". The
words "these also" indicate that this
collection was added to an already existing
volume by a later hand.
It is also clear from internal evidence
that parts of the book were written by other
authors. The section starting at 22:17 is
ascribed to "the wise"; chapter 30 is by
"Agur, the son of Jakeh", chapter 31:1-9 is
by "King Lemuel".
