  5. Loading

  8. Q: I get a message CRITICAL FILE MISSING when trying to run the
  9. demo.
  10.  
  11. A: You have either one of the ZIP files missing, or you have not
  12. used the -d option when using PKUNZIP.
  13. There are up to four files required to run the Z demo :
  14.  
  15. e_zdemo1.zip
  16. e_zdemo2.zip
  17. e_zdemo3.zip
  18. e_zdemow.zip
  19.  
  20. (Note, the e_ prefix may be different depending on the
  21. language/version of the demo.)
  22.  
  23. The e_zdemow.zip file is only needed if you intend to play the
  24. demo under Win95.
  25.  
  26. To extract the files, use : PKUNZIP -d *.zip.

  30. Q: I get a message that says 'Mouse Driver Not responding' when I
  31. try to load the demo.
  32.  
  33. A: If you are running the demo in DOS you must load a DOS mouse
  34. driver before you start running Z.  Please refer to the
  35. documentation that was supplied with your mouse.

  39. Q: I get a message that says 'Not Enough Memory' when I try to
  40. load the demo.
  41. Q: I get a message that says 'Insufficient Extended
  42. Memory' when I try to load the demo.
  43.  
  44. A: Z will only work on computers with 8Mb or more.  If you think
  45. you have enough memory but see this message, it will be because
  46. you are running programs which use up your extended memory.  This
  47. is mostly likely to be due to programs like RAMDRIVE or
  48. SMARTDRIVE that are launched automatically by CONFIG.SYS or
  49. AUTOEXEC.BAT when your computer starts up.  Please refer to the
  50. MS- DOS documentation that came with your computer on how to
  51. adjust or remove them to free up some memory.

  55. Q: I get a message that says 'Sound card not responding.' when I
  56. try to load the demo (or possibly the demo hangs during loading.)
  57.  
  58. A: This is probably because your sound card is configured
  59. incorrectly.  Follow the instructions in the installation guide
  60. to run SETSOUND, configure your sound card and then use the menu
  61. items to test your choices.

  65. Q: The demo crashes or hangs during loading.
  66.  
  67. A: Ensure that your sound card is selected correctly and that
  68. you have tested it using SETSOUND.  Try changing the settings for
  69. UniVBE, using the SETVIDEO utility, as detailed below.

  71. Sound Cards
  72. -----------

  74. Q: My sound card is not detected by SETSOUND correctly.
  75.  
  76. A: If you are running under DOS make that the drivers supplied
  77. with your card are installed and working correctly (this should
  78. be automatic under Win95).  SETSOUND needs this setup information
  79. to able to detect your card properly.  If all else fails try the
  80. Sound Blaster or 100% compatible options for both MIDI and
  81. Digital at the top of the list for each.  Remember to test any
  82. choices you make using the menu items.  If you have a Sound
  83. Blaster clone that is not directly supported by SETSOUND then you
  84. must make sure that it is set up correctly into Sound Blaster
  85. emulation.  This will normally involve setting the BLASTER
  86. environment variable and possibly running a TSR.  Refer to the
  87. documentation that came with your sound card for further
  88. information.

  92. Q: There's more than one sound card in my machine with one being
  93. used for MIDI sound and one being used for Digital and the demo
  94. crashes in the cut scenes.
  95.  
  96. A: Use SETSOUND to configure the sound system so that both the
  97. MIDI and Digital are being driven by one card.

  101. Q: The sound was too loud so I reduced the volume settings from
  102. within the in-demo sound control panel.  There was a significant
  103. degradation in digital audio quality.
  104.  
  105. A: The volume levels for midi music & sfx have been pre-set
  106. within the demo to achieve optimum audio performance. If for any
  107. reason these levels are too loud or too quiet for your sound
  108. card, it is important to adjust the relevant settings in your
  109. sound card sound control panel.  Consult your sound card users
  110. manual for instructions.  Recommended Volume Settings for In-demo
  111. Sound Control Panel:  Music: Set fader to maximum.  SFX:   Set
  112. fader to half-way.

  116. Q: Media Vision Pro Audio Spectrum is not detected properly by
  117. SETSOUND.
  118.  
  119. A: This card will only be detected if you have the drivers
  120. MVSOUND.SYS installed.  The latest version of the drivers will
  121. install PROS.SYS instead.  With this driver installed the card
  122. will be detected as a Sound Blaster Pro and should be set up as
  123. one.

  127. Q: The Pine Wagner  iDEMA Meastro 16 is not detected properly by
  128. SETSOUND.
  129.  
  130. A: This card uses the driver ES968.COM in CONFIG.SYS to
  131. configure its addresses and IRQs.  It must be set to the Sound
  132. Blaster defaults i.e. A:220 I:5 D:1 before SETOUND will detect it
  133. properly

  137. Q: The MWAVE card in the IBM APTIVA is not detected by SETSOUND
  138. in Windows 95.
  139.  
  140. A: If you 'Shut down to DOS' the card is detected without any
  141. problems.  APTIVAs are supplied with all the DOS drivers
  142. installed correctly so there should be no problems in this mode.

  144. Video Cards
  145. -----------

  147. Q: The SVGA button is greyed out on the demo Control menu
  148.  
  149. A: This can be caused by two different things :-
  150. 1) You don't have enough free extended memory, see above.
  151. 2) Your video card will not run the demo in SVGA (see the next
  152. section for a possible solution).

  156. Q: I'm having problems with my video display.
  157. I can't my demo to go into SVGA mode.
  158. The display seems to be running slowly, particularly in SVGA
  159. mode
  160.  
  161. A: It is quite probable that UniVBE will help.  If your video
  162. card has VESA 1.2 or greater support UniVBE will not have been
  163. installed.  Run the utility SETVIDEO and select the option FORCE
  164. UNIVBE ON It is possible, that on a few video cards, UniVBE may
  165. cause instability. If you are experiencing problems run the
  166. utility SETVIDEO and select the option FORCE UNIVBE OFF
  167.  
  168. A MATROX PCI card requires UniVBE to be specially configured,
  169. Type UVCONFIG -s28 -c1
  170.  
  171. The Viper VLB card requires its own VESA driver to be run. Run
  172. VPRMODE
  173.  
  174. Windows 95
  175. ----------
  176.  
  177. Q: I'm running Windows 95 and the demo can slows down repeatedly
  178. whilst a level is being played.
  179.  
  180. A: Due to amount of memory used by Windows 95 on some
  181. installations, Z can slow down due to memory swapping on 8Mb
  182. machines.  If this happens 'Shut Down to DOS' and run the demo
  183. from there. Ensure that your 'Hardware Acceleration' setting is
  184. set on Full. Double click on the System icon within the System
  185. Panel group, click the performance tab and then the Graphics
  186. button to view the current setting.

  190. Q: I was running the demo in SVGA mode and I pressed the Windows
  191. key and now the demo cannot be restored.
  192.  
  193. A: Don't press the Windows key!
  194.  
  195. Performance
  196. -----------
  197.  
  198. The demo will play cut scenes and load levels better if you
  199. are running a disk caching utility.  Make sure your AUTOEXC file
  200. calls SMARTDRV after you have loaded all your CD ROM software.
  201. Refer to your DOS and CD ROM documentation for more information.
  202.  
  203. Q: I've changed my detail level but now I want the demo to
  204. re-assess my computer's specification and decide on my optimum
  205. detail level.
  206.  
  207. A: Delete the file called OPTIONS.CFG that has been created in
  208. the directory from which you run the demo.  The demo will create
  209. a new file with default settings the next time it is run.
