o=o=o WORLD WIDE WEB PAGES o=o=o¢ by Alan Sharkis, Editor¢ OHAUG Newsletter¢¢ The World Wide Web is a series of¢ sites on the Internet that are¢ capable of producing very fancy¢ graphical "pages" for viewing on IBM-¢ compatibles and Macs. These pages¢ can contain TEXT and GRAPHIC IMAGES¢ in the form of .gif or .gpeg files. ¢ They can contain LINKS to other pages¢ and sites. They can contain FILES¢ for downloading. They can even¢ contain AUDIO CLIPS (.wav files) and¢ FULL-MOTION VIDEO in a number of¢ different formats.¢¢ The World Wide Web is accessed¢ through software called a BROWSER. ¢ Your Internet Service Provider will¢ either have the browser on line when¢ you call, or ship you a copy to run¢ on your machine. For Atari 8-bits,¢ one way to get onto the World Wide¢ Web is through Genie. In order to do¢ this, you need a terminal program¢ capable of 80 columns of text per¢ line and VT-100 emulation. Genie¢ runs LYNX, which is a text-based¢ browser. You'll see the text of the¢ page, together with references in¢ parentheses wherever there is a¢ graphic image or a link to another¢ page. You can click on some of these¢ and download the image, but that is¢ very time-consuming. If you're using¢ LYNX through Genie, you can also¢ download files by clicking on their¢ references. The files are downloaded¢ to your personal storage space. You¢ then download them from Genie. The¢ procedures for using LYNX are¢ somewhat complicated. A demo is much¢ better than any written description I¢ can give you.¢¢ The World Wide Web allows you to look¢ at Web pages, but also allows you¢ access to some other, classic¢ Internet services, such as FTP and¢ ARCHIE. In the FTP document, I've¢ given you an example of how this is¢ done.¢¢ A Web page is accesed through its URL¢ (universal resource locator.) If¢ you're interested in URL's you can¢ probably see a pattern in them that¢ will tell you where the server for¢ that page is located and what kind of¢ institution it is at. Any book on¢ the Internet will give you more¢ information about that. In the URL's¢ listed below, you'll often find the¢ sequence of characters, "%7E." The¢ tilde, on those machines that have¢ it, can substitute for that string. ¢ Unfortunately, our 8-bits don't have¢ the tilde.¢¢ Below are some WWW pages that I've¢ tested recently. The name of the¢ page is in capitals, and the URL is¢ listed directly below it. Be careful¢ when typing URLs. They are quite¢ long (too long to fit on one line in¢ this newsletter, but type them as one¢ line) and must be done exactly the¢ way you see them here. If they don't¢ work, or if you find links to pages¢ not listed, please let me know.¢¢¢ABBUC¢http://rpool1.rus.uni-p1stuttgart.de/%7Einf1492/abbuc/index/h¢¢ANTIC ONLINE PROJECT¢1http://www.northcoast.com/savetz/antic/dap.html¢¢A.P.E.HOME PAGE¢http://www.nacs.net/%7Eclassics/¢¢ATARI COMMERCIALS¢http://intrepid.mcs.kent.edu/%7Eclisowsk/movies¢¢ATARI EMULATION PAGE¢http://www.users.fast.net/%7Esmol/8bitemu.html¢¢ATARI EMULATOR FOR UNIX AND AMIGA¢http://www.signus.demon.co.uk/david/atari/atari.html¢¢ATARI EMULATOR UTILITIES¢http://www.net.link.co.uk/users/helix/atari8¢ATARI INTERNET RESOURCES¢http://pmwww.cs.nl/home/poorten/Atari.8bit.Homepage/Resources.html¢¢ATARI 8-BIT RESORT¢http://www.uni-karlsruhe.de/%7EMarek.Tomczyk/8bit.html¢¢ATARI ON THE INTERNET¢http://www-und.uda.liu.se/%7Et94pasta/atari.html¢¢ATARI ON THE WEB¢http://www.ncc.ac.uk/%7Edlms/atari.html¢¢ATARI SITES/NEWSGROUPS¢http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/rlink/siteinfo.htm¢¢ATARI XL/XE HOMEPAGE¢http://rpool1/rus.uni-stuttgart.de/%7Einf1492/Atari¢¢ATARI XL/XE SYSTEM¢http://rzserv2.fh-lueneburg.de:8080/Atari_2¢¢BIG ATARI 8-BIT HOMEPAGE¢http://student.uci.agh.edu.pl/%7Etatar/Atari/hp.html¢¢BRANCH ALWAYS SOFTWARE ONLINE MAIN MENU¢http://www.halcyon.com/brasoft/¢¢BRITISH UNDERGROUND ATARI 8 BIT¢http://intrepid.mcs.kent.edu//%7Eclisowsk/8bit.html¢¢CAPTIAN BLADE'S ATARI BOOKMARKS¢http://www.3rdplanet.com:80/%7Estarship.atari.htm¢¢CLASSIC ATARI ONLINE¢http://ourworld/compuserve.com/homepages/dschmud/dsatari.htm¢¢HOMEPAGE NYMAN: ATARI 8BIT¢http://geocities.com/SiliconValley/2741/8bit.html¢¢INDEX OF ANNATAR¢http://cow.pasture.com/%7Eannatar/8bit/¢¢NEW BREED SOFTWARE'S PAGE!¢http://zippy.sonoma.edu/%7Ekendrick/nbs/index.html¢¢NIR DARY PAL-NTSC CONVERTER¢http://www.pacificnet.net/%7Enirdary/palntsc/palntsc.htm¢¢NWPAC HOMEPAGE¢http://www.yab.com/%7Ecoolzip¢¢OTHER ATARI LINKS¢http://ace.cs.ohiou.edu/personal/mleair/others/html¢¢RAINBOW EMULATOR PAGE¢http://www.cityscape.co.uk/users/jx91.rainbow.html¢¢SOME ATARI 8-BIT STUFF¢http://er4www.eng.ohio-state.edu/%7Efunkr/Atari/¢¢THE ALTERNATE REALITY HOME PAGE¢http://www.ksk.sola.se/%7Esp93rob/dungeon/¢¢THE BLACK STUMP ATARI PAGE¢http://werple.net.au/%7Elions/atari.htm¢¢THE CLOSER TO HOME WEB PAGE¢http://brutus.bright.net/%7Etomhunt/¢¢THE INDUSTRIAL STOMP: ATARI¢http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/dschmud/dsatari.html¢¢UMICH ARCHIVE INFORMATION¢http://www.umich.edu/%7Earchive/atari/info¢¢UMICH ARCHIVE 8-BIT¢http://www.umich.edu/%7Earchive/atari/8bit¢¢XL-IT HOME PAGE¢http://www.htw.uni-sb.de/people/mgietzen/atari/xl-it.html¢¢XFSIO HOME PAGE¢http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Park/1211/xfsio.html¢¢ o=o=o=o=o=o¢¢¢
