  1. ThinkPad Essentials

  4. ThinkPad Essentials provides IBM Sales Representatives, IBM 
  5. Resellers and Customers with a variety of ThinkPad evaluation 
  6. and sales tools. ThinkPad Essentials is produced twice a year by 
  7. IBM Multimedia Solutions in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A.  For information
  8. about producing a similar tool for your organization, contact

  12. Hardware Requirements:
  13.  
  14. - 486 DX4 75Mhz, or faster processor
  15. - 8MB of memory 
  16. - 10MB of free hard drive
  17. - 256 colors (64K colors recommended)
  18. - Windows 3.1, Windows 95 or WIN-OS/2
  19.  
  20.  
  21. A. To Install under Windows 3.1, WIN-OS/2 or Windows 95: 
  22. (WIN-OS/2 users please refer to important information below)
  23.  
  24. Run d:\setup.exe (where "d" is the letter of your CD-ROM drive).
  25.  
  26. RUN THE INSTALL PROGRAM EVEN IF YOU HAVE INSTALLED A PREVIOUS 
  27. RELEASE OF THINKPAD ESSENTIALS.  
  28.  
  29. The install program will search your hard drive to see if Adobe 
  30. Acrobat, Video for Windows and PointCast should also be installed.
  31.  
  32. The installation options are:
  33.  
  34. ThinkPad Essentials, which is always pre-selected
  35.  
  36. Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0, which is pre-selected if Acrobat 3.0 or later 
  37. was not found on your hard drive.       
  38.  
  39. PointCast, which is pre-selected if PointCast is not already installed. 
  40. On OS/2 systems this option is grayed out.
  41.  
  42. Video for Windows, is pre-selected if VFW was not located. On Windows 95 
  43. systems, this option is grayed out. 
  44.  
  45. The ThinkPad Essentials installation program will invoke the Adobe Acrobat,
  46. Video for Windows and PointCast installation programs (as needed). 
  47. The ThinkPad Essentials installation program will then search your 
  48. hard drive for the location of Freelance for Windows, Adobe Acrobat, 
  49. and either Netscape or Internet Explorer. You can manually adjust the 
  50. path location of these applications by selecting the SETUP option from 
  51. the ThinkPad Essentials main menu.

  54. B. Important information for installing with OS/2 Warp 
  55.  
  56. 1. Before you begin installing ThinkPad Essentials, make sure
  57. your system is set to run WIN-OS/2 in Enhanced mode.
  58.  
  59. - Double click on  OS/2 System
  60. - Double click on  Command Prompts
  61. - Single click on  WIN-OS/2 Full Screen, then right mouse click
  62. - Click on  Settings
  63. - Click on the  Session tab
  64. - Verify  WIN-OS/2 full screen is selected
  65. - Click on  WIN-OS/2 settings button
  66. - Verify  All DOS and WIN-OS/2 settings is selected, click on OK 
  67. - Click on  3.1 Enhanced Compatibility, click on  Save button
  68.  
  69. 2. To start ThinkPad Essentials installation, double click on   
  70.  WIN-OS/2 Full Screen (do NOT run SETUP directly from the OS/2
  71. Desktop).

  73. 3. Insert ThinkPad Essentials CD #1
  74.  
  75. 4. Click on  File, click on  Run
  76.  
  77. 5. d:\setup    where "d" is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive
  78.  
  79. 6. A ThinkPad Essentials program group should have been created as part
  80. of the installation
  81.  
  82. 7. Open the ThinkPad Essentials program group and double click
  83. on the "Essentials" icon.

  87. If you want to create an icon on the OS/2 desktop the path is:

  89. c:\tpessen\present.exe c:\tpessen\start.iwn

  93. Trouble shooting guide
  94.  
  95. 1. MPEG videos do not play:
  96.  
  97. MPEG 1 videos will work only on systems such as the 760CD/ED that
  98. have a hardware MPEG decoder or on the ThinkPad 380, 560 and 760 with 
  99. a software MPEG decoder. MPEG 2 files require a hardware MPEG 2
  100. decoder and are not supported under OS/2.

  102. 2. I select an item and nothing happens
  103.  
  104. ThinkPad Essentials cannot find the program required to view this item.
  105. Select the "Setup" option from the main menu and verify that all 
  106. application paths are correct. If you recently added, removed or moved 
  107. one if the required applications it may be easier to re-install ThinkPad
  108. Essentials and have the installation program automatically search the 
  109. applications.
  110.  
  111. 3. Message: Freelance not installed 
  112.  
  113. During the installation of ThinkPad Essentials, the program was unable
  114. to locate either Freelance for Windows 3.1 or Freelance96. If you select 
  115. "Setup" from the main menu, you will see that the path is blank. 
  116. To correct, install Freelance and then manually add the path location in 
  117. the "Setup" screen, or re-install ThinkPad Essentials after installing 
  118. Freelance.
  119.  
  120. Please note that Freelance for OS/2 does not work with ThinkPad Essentials.
  121.  
  122. Freelance is only used in the Presentations section of ThinkPad Essentials.
  123. If you do not have a copy of Freelance for Windows, you may still view 
  124. the presentations by selecting the Adobe Acrobat version.
  125.  
  126. 4. Message: Acrobat not installed 
  127.  
  128. During the installation of ThinkPad Essentials, the program was unable to 
  129. locate Adobe Acrobat 3.0 or later. If you select "Setup" from the 
  130. main menu, you will see that the path is blank. To correct, re-install 
  131. ThinkPad Essentials and make sure to select the Adobe Acrobat option.
  132.  
  133. 5. Message: Browser not installed 
  134.  
  135. During the installation of ThinkPad Essentials, the program was unable to 
  136. locate either Netscape or Internet Explorer. If you select "Setup" from the 
  137. main menu, you will see that the path is blank. To correct, install a 
  138. Windows based browser and either manually add the path location in the 
  139. "Setup" screen, or re-install ThinkPad Essentials after installing the 
  140. browser. If you are using another Windows based browser, you must manually 
  141. add the path.

  143. ThinkPad Essentials cannot automatically launch OS/2 based browsers.
  144.  
  145. 6. White screen with "Loading Files" is displayed
  146.  
  147. ThinkPad Essentials displays contents by calling other programs such as 
  148. Adobe Acrobat, Media Player and Lotus Freelance. In order to return to 
  149. the ThinkPad Essentials menu it is important to first close the other 
  150. application. You will get a "white screen" if the other application is 
  151. minimized instead of closed. To correct, use the "Alt-Tab" keys and 
  152. activate the minimized application, you will return to ThinkPad Essentials 
  153. once the application has been properly closed.
  154.  
  155. 7. Adobe Acrobat does not run under OS/2
  156.  
  157. Your WIN-OS/2 session must be set to run in Enhanced mode. Please refer 
  158. to OS/2 installation instructions above.
  159.  
  160. 8. I cannot find the icons on my OS/2 desktop or WIN-OS/2 session
  161.  
  162. If you run SETUP.EXE directly from your OS/2 desktop, the installation 
  163. appears to have executed correctly but not icons will be found in either 
  164. the OS/2 desktop or WIN-OS/2 session. 
  165.  
  166. To correct: Run SETUP.EXE from a full screen WIN-OS/2 setup.  You can 
  167. manually add the icon to your OS/2 desktop, the path is:
  168.  
  169. c:\tpessen\present.exe c:\tpessen\start.iwn
