Scientists said that the rivers of gas travel about 10 percent faster than surrounding gases and resemble Earth's jet streams--bands of fast-moving air currents that occur at high altitudes. The streams are about 17,000 miles (27,000 kilometers) across and are found several thousand miles below the Sun's surface, according to scientists. Observations from the European Solar and Heliospheric Observatory spacecraft, launched in 1995, led to the discovery. </P>
