  144. Installation Advice
  145. -------------------
  146. 1. "Hype - the Time Quest" is a high-performance
  147.    multimedia program.  This game was created to get the most
  148.    out of your multimedia computer.  Before installing the program,
  149.    or before starting to play, you are advised to close any
  150.    applications that may still be open. 
  151.  
  152. 2. Make sure you have the latest drivers for your 3D card.
  153.    This is extremely important for maximum game performance.
  154.    Refer to "Installation Options According to your 3D Card".

  158. III. INSTALLATION OPTIONS
  159. =================================
  160.  
  161. You can choose different types of installation on your
  162. computer. This option will depend on your 3D card and how much
  163. memory you have on your computer.
  164.  
  165.  
  166. According to your 3D Card
  167. -------------------------
  168. "Hype - the Time Quest" is optimised to function
  169. with two types of 3D card drivers: DirectX 6.1 and Glide3.01
  170.  
  171. By default, the installation will suggest the DirectX6 version,
  172. as this is the easiest to install.However, if you have a 3Dfx card, the game's performance
  173. will be increased with the Glide 3.01 version.
  174. If you do not want the default installation option,
  175. click on "change", then choose an installation type
  176. from the list suggested to you.
  177.  
  178. 1- If your card works with 3Dfx technology and you are
  179.    ready to update the drivers for your card,
  180.    choose version Glide3.
  181.  
  182. 2- If your card is not a 3Dfx card choose DirectX 6.1.    In both cases, refer to your video card user's manual 
  183.    for relevant details and requirements. 
  184.  
  185. If the installation system detects an out-of-date version of  
  186. the drivers required, it will install the up-to-date versions
  187. if necessary. Only with these versions will you 
  188. be able to play "Hype - the Time Quest".
  189. When you start the game, the driver versions will be tested
  190. and an error message will inform you if you do not have the
  191. latest drivers (See "3D card drivers").
  192.  
  193. Note:

  195. * If you are using an AGP 3D card.
  196. The game requires a minimum 8Mb of AGP memory. You can adjust 
  197. this amount on your computer's BIOS.  
  198. If you do not have enough AGP memory, you will get an error message when you start the game.

  201. * If you are using an AGP 3D card,
  202. you may have difficulties running the game properly.
  203. Refer to the "UbiConfig_EN.txt" for further information.
  204. * If you are installing the game in Windows NT,
  205. the default installation type will also be
  206. DirectX6, but you are advised to choose Glide3. In this case,
  207. refer to the "Installation of Glide3.txt" document to update
  208. your 3D card's drivers.

  213. IV. 3D CARD DRIVERS

  216. It is EXTREMELY important that you have all the latest drivers
  217. for your 3D card. All 3D card manufacturers frequently update
  218. their drivers and it is very likely that the drivers you installed
  219. when you purchased your card have since become outdated. 
  220.  
  221. Find the latest DirectX drivers Kit at www.microsoft.com 
  222. You need the 6.1 or better version.
  223.  
  224. Find the latest Glide drivers at www.3dfx.com
  225. You need the 3.01 or better.

  227. V. HINTS
  228. ========

  230. "ALT" + "TAB"
  231. ------------
  232. You are strongly advised against switching to other applications
  233. by pressing "Alt" + "Tab" during the game.
  234.  
  235. Loading a level
  236. ---------------Loading a level in "Hype - the Time Quest" can take
  237. a while owing to the large number of graphic elements
  238. contained in the level. The progress bar for the time taken to load is not always 
  239. accurate, since this time depends on your system.
  240. Don't worry if your progress bar is full
  241. and you still have to wait a few more seconds.

  244. How do quit the game?
  245. --------------------
  246. From the game, press "ESC" to pause the game.
  247. Choose "Main Menu".

  249. From the main menu, select "Quit".  You will be asked
  250. to confirm your choice.

  254. VI. MAXIMISING THE GAME'S PERFORMANCE
  255. =====================================

  257. You will be able to play "Hype - the Time Quest" perfectly well
  258. on some systems and less well on others.  The game's
  259. performance and fluidity are directly linked to the performance of
  260. your PC, 3D card and sound card.
  261.

  263. Here is some advice on maximising the game's fluidity.
  264.  
  265.  
  266. 1. If your card supports Glide3 technology (all Voodoo cards),
  267.    select this type of installation rather than the one proposed by default. 
  268.    Refer to the "3D card drivers" section.
  269.  
  270. 2. Reduce the quality of the textures. Proceed as follows:
  271.    * Choose "Options" from the main menu
  272.    * Then choose "Picture"
  273.    * Choose adjust cursor from the "Textures" line
  274.  
  275. 3. If you want to optimise the game in more detail, 
  276.    there is a utility to change graphic and sound characteristics.
  277.    Refer to the "ubiconfig_EN.txt" document on the CD-ROM.

  280. VII. UNINSTALLING THE GAME
  281. ==========================

  284. If you have already installed the game on your computer, you can
  285. uninstall it or change the type of installation.
  286.  
  287. If you want to change the type of installation, it is best to
  288. uninstall the game first, otherwise some files may take up
  289. unnecessary space on your hard disk.

  291. To uninstall the game, choose the uninstall option
  292. in the main menu or from the Windows "Start" menu
  293. via the following path: "Programmes\Ubi Soft\Hype - the Time 
  294. Quest"

  303. Adjusting the graphic quality
  304. -----------------------------
  305. "Hype - the Time Quest" offers a very high graphic
  306. quality.  However, depending on your computer's configuration,
  307. the graphic workload can slow down the game.
  308.  
  309. You can access the picture control menu by selecting "Options"
  310. from the main menu, then "picture".
  311.  
  312. You can adjust the "Graphic quality", the "screen size" and the
  313. "textures" using the cursors.
  314.  
  315. "Graphic quality" allows you to modify the importance
  316. of certain visual elements which require a lot of processing - for
  317. example, Hype's shadow.
  318.  
  319. "screen size" reduces the display surface on your screen
  320. and improves the fluidity of the game.
  321.  
  322. "Textures" modifies the quality of the textures.  The lower
  323. the level, the more fluid the game.

  328. Adjusting the Volume
  329. --------------------
  330. Some sound cards do not respond well when you adjust
  331. the volume in certain applications.  If you have trouble 
  332. adjusting the volume from the game, adjust the volume of your 
  333. computer manually by double-clicking on the speaker icon
  334. at the bottom right of your Windows screen or by going into
  335. the control panel on your PC.

  407. X. TROUBLESHOOTING

  412. Non-existent or faulty files

  414. The game may not be able to find the right files on your hard drive if they do not exist or if they are faulty.

  416. In this case, you must reinstall the program. 
  417. To do this, you do not need to uninstall the game.

  431. Graphic Resolution Problem in Windows

  436. bigger than usual and you will no longer see the application icons.
