  63. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  64. ===================

  66. To run Internet Explorer 4.0, your system must meet the following 
  67. minimum requirements:
  68.  
  69. - A 486 with a 66 Mhz processor (Pentium processor recommended)
  70. - For Microsoft Windows 95:
  71.   12 MB of RAM minimum, 16 MB with Active Desktop
  72. á For Microsoft Windows NT:
  73.   16 MB of RAM minimum, 24 MB with Active Desktop
  74. - For Microsoft Windows NT: 
  75.   You must be running Service Pack 3 (or higher)
  76. - 40 to 70 MB of hard-disk space (depending on installation type) 
  77. - Mouse
  78. - Modem
  79. - CD-ROM

  82. SETUP
  83. =====
  84.  
  85. - Before you install Internet Explorer 4.0, you should make sure that no
  86.   scheduled tasks are running, because they might interfere with the Setup 
  87.   process.
  88.  
  89. - CAUTION: Do not install any previous version of Internet Explorer over 
  90.   Internet Explorer 4.0. If you need to install an earlier version of Internet 
  91.   Explorer, you must uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0 first.
  92.  
  93. - If you have been using Platform Preview 2 release of Internet Explorer 
  94.   4.0, you should uninstall that version before installing the final version. 
  95.   During the uninstall process, you will be prompted to save your Outlook 
  96.   Express preferences; they will be used to set up Outlook Express when you 
  97.   install Internet Explorer 4.0. 
  98.  
  99. - It is recommended that you download Internet Explorer 4.0 to a 
  100.   directory that does not contain any other files and that will not 
  101.   be used for any other purpose. If for some reason you want to 
  102.   uninstall the Setup files, the download directory will be removed. 
  103.   For information about removing the Setup files, see "Installing Internet 
  104.   Explorer 4.0."
  105.  
  106. Installing Internet Explorer 4.0
  107. --------------------------------
  108. Whether you choose to install over the network or to download the 
  109. installation files to your hard disk, the Setup files are copied to 
  110. your hard disk. This is so you can reinstall more quickly if you need 
  111. to. If you want to reclaim the disk space, you can remove the Setup 
  112. directory by double-clicking the Add/Remove Programs icon in Control 
  113. Panel and then clicking Internet Explorer 4.0 Setup Files.
  114.  
  115. You cannot install Internet Explorer 4.0 to or run it from a 
  116. network drive. However, you can download it to a network drive. 
  117. To do this, you must map the network drive to a drive letter on 
  118. your computer. You cannot download Internet Explorer 4.0 to a 
  119. UNC path.
  120.  
  121. If Internet Explorer 4.0 appears to stop responding at the end 
  122. of Setup, you need to restart your computer manually. 
  123.  
  124. Running Internet Explorer 4.0 on Windows NT
  125. -------------------------------------------
  126. NOTE: You must have administrative privileges to install and 
  127. uninstall this program on Windows NT. This includes having 
  128. administrative privileges the first time you start your computer 
  129. after installing or uninstalling.
  130.  
  131. You must restart your computer after installing Internet Explorer 
  132. 4.0. This is also true for some add-on components.
  133.  
  134. If you're running Internet Explorer 4.0 on Windows NT, you must 
  135. set user permissions to Full Control for the Temporary Internet 
  136. Files folder (cache). The user must have write permission in order 
  137. for files to be stored in the Temporary Internet Files folder.
  138.  
  139. If you must reinstall Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 (SP3) after 
  140. you install Internet Explorer 4.0, you must specify when prompted 
  141. that you do not want it to overwrite any files that are newer. 
  142. After SP3 is reinstalled, carry out the following steps to update 
  143. the registry:
  144.  
  145. 1. Click the Start button, and then click Run.
  146. 2. Type the following: regsvr32 rsabase.dll
  147. 3. Click OK.
  148.  
  149. Running Internet Explorer 4.0 on a Dual-Boot Operating System
  150. -------------------------------------------------------------
  151. If your computer is set up to dual boot between two operating 
  152. systems, you must install multiple instances of Internet Explorer 
  153. 4.0 in a separate directory for each operating system. For example, 
  154. if you are running Windows 95 and Windows NT, you might want to 
  155. install Internet Explorer 4.0 in C:\IE95 for Windows 95 and in C:\IENT 
  156. for Windows NT. Do not try to use the same installation of Internet 
  157. Explorer with two operating systems. If you later uninstall Internet 
  158. Explorer 4.0, one of your operating systems may be left unbootable if 
  159. you don't follow these steps.

  161. Note also that if you dual boot between two operating systems 
  162. that are configured to share a Program Files folder, and you 
  163. uninstall an add-on component from one of your Internet Explorer 
  164. 4.0 installations, it will be removed from both of them. This is 
  165. because the add-on files are stored in the Program Files folder.
  166.  
  167. Uninstalling Internet Explorer 4.0
  168. ----------------------------------
  169. You can uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0 by carrying out the 
  170. following steps:
  171.  
  172. 1. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  173. 2. Click Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, and then click Add/Remove.
  174. 3. Follow the instructions on your screen.
  175.  
  176.  
  177. Adding or Removing the Windows Desktop Update
  178. ---------------------------------------------
  179. To add or remove the Windows Desktop Update, carry out the following 
  180. steps:
  181.  
  182. 1. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  183. 2. Click Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, and then click Add/Remove.
  184. 3. To remove it, click "Remove the Windows Desktop Update component 
  185.    but keep the Internet Explorer 4.0 Web browser."
  186.  
  187.    To add it, click "Add the Windows Desktop Update component from 
  188.    Web site," and then follow the instructions on the screen.
  189.  
  190. NOTE: For this release, clicking "Add the Windows Desktop Update 
  191. component from Web Site" opens the Internet Explorer 4.0 components 
  192. download page so you can download and install the Windows Desktop 
  193. Update. If you have previously downloaded or installed the Windows 
  194. Desktop Update, you can enable it without connecting to the Internet 
  195. by running IE4setup.exe from your local Internet Explorer 4.0 Setup 
  196. folder. When prompted, click Yes to enable the Windows Desktop 
  197. Update, and then choose to upgrade only newer items.

  199. Installing Internet Explorer in a Language Different 
  200.   from the Operating System Language
  201. ----------------------------------------------------
  202. If you install a version of Internet Explorer in a language 
  203. different from the language of the operating system you are 
  204. running, the Windows Desktop Update will not be installed.

  207. CONFIGURING SUBSCRIPTIONS IN AMERICA ONLINE
  208. ===========================================
  209.  
  210. If you want, you can manually update your subscriptions through 
  211. America Online by carrying out the following steps:
  212.  
  213. 1. Right-click the Internet Explorer icon, and then click Properties.
  214. 2. Click the Connection tab.
  215. 3. Select the "Connect to the Internet using a local area network" 
  216.    check box.
  217. 4. In the Proxy Server area, make sure that the "Access the Internet 
  218.    using a proxy server" check box is not selected.
  219. 5. Connect to America Online, and then log on.
  220. 6. Open Internet Explorer.
  221. 7. Click the Favorites menu, and then click Update All Subscriptions.
  222.

  224. NOTE TO FRENCH USERS OF INTERNET EXPLORER 4.0
  225. =============================================
  226.  
  227. In order to comply with French laws on the use of encryption 
  228. material, the following features have been disabled for users 
  229. in France:
  230.  
  231. - S/MIME support in Outlook Express
  232. - The Microsoft Wallet secure storage feature
  233. - PCT 1.0 support
  234.  
  235. However, SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0 support are authorized, and are 
  236. still enabled.
  237.  
  238.  
  239. KNOWN ISSUES
  240. ============
  241.  
  242. PICS Support in Internet Explorer 4.0
  243. -------------------------------------
  244. The Internet Explorer Content Advisor uses PICS (Platform for 
  245. Internet Content Selection) ratings. Please be aware of the 
  246. following items:
  247.  
  248. - The PICS rating is not used for documents using the file:// 
  249.   protocol.
  250.  
  251. - If you have ratings enabled, they will apply to items that 
  252.   you have added to your Active Desktop. A "Navigation Canceled" 
  253.   message will be displayed instead of Web content for Active 
  254.   Desktop items that are blocked due to content ratings. 
  255.  
  256. Some Programs Do Not Detect Browser Version Correctly
  257. -----------------------------------------------------
  258. Some third-party Internet-based programs use nonstandard 
  259. methods of detecting the current browser version. If you 
  260. experience this in a program you are running, please contact 
  261. the program vendor for an update.
  262.  
  263. Temporary Internet Files are Replicated 
  264.   to the Home Directory of Roaming Users
  265. ----------------------------------------
  266. The Temporary Internet Files folder is replicated to the home 
  267. directory of users with roaming profiles. If you are running 
  268. Internet Explorer 4.0 on a Windows NT system, this may cause 
  269. disk-space problems on servers with numerous roaming users or 
  270. with several users who have with large caches. To set cache size, 
  271. click the View menu, click Internet Options, and then click the 
  272. Settings button.

  274. Access Aptiva Issues with Internet Explorer 4.0
  275. -----------------------------------------------
  276. The Access Aptiva component of the IBM Aptiva PC does not render 
  277. properly with Internet Explorer 4.0. To get an updated version of 
  278. the Access Aptiva program, you can either go to the IBM home page 
  279. at http://www.us.pc.ibm.com/aptiva, or click IBM Update Connector 
  280. on the Start menu, which automatically downloads the updated 
  281. components.

  284. APPLICATION COMPATIBILITY
  285. =========================
  286.  
  287. Adobe Acrobat: Using Internet Explorer 4.0 with 
  288. Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0
  289. -----------------------------------------------
  290. Using the Adobe Acrobat .pdf viewer in Internet Explorer 4.0 
  291. may not work. You can download the latest version from 
  292. http://www.adobe.com.
  293.  
  294. Also, if Content Advisor is turned on in Internet Explorer 4.0, 
  295. you cannot view .pdf files in the browser.
  296.  
  297. CleanSweep: Critical System Files Replaced
  298. ------------------------------------------
  299. If you are already running Internet Explorer 4.0, installing 
  300. CleanSweep 3.0 is not recommended. CleanSweep replaces vital 
  301. system files and will cause both Internet Explorer and the 
  302. Active Desktop not to work properly.
  303.  
  304. If you must install CleanSweep, please visit this site for

  309. DEC ClientWorks: Remove Xdmisrv.exe Before Installing 
  310.   Internet Explorer 4.0
  311. -----------------------------------------------------
  312. If you are running DEC Client Works on a computer with Windows 95 
  313. and with no networking services installed, you should remove the 
  314. file Xdmisrv.exe from your startup group before installing Internet 
  315. Explorer 4.0. Otherwise, you may see the following error message when 
  316. your computer restarts after installation: "RPCSS caused an invalid 
  317. page fault in module OLE32 at 015F:7FFBAD35." This error does not 
  318. occur if any networking services are installed, including Dial-Up 
  319. Networking. This issue has been fixed in DCOM95 1.1, which you can 
  320. download from http://www.microsoft.com/com/.
  321.  
  322. Microsoft Money: Requires Updated 128-bit Extensions
  323. ----------------------------------------------------
  324. If you install Microsoft Money 97 on a computer running Internet 
  325. Explorer 4.0, please go to the following Web site:

  327.      http://www.microsoft.com/ie/ie40/download/128bit.htm
  328.  
  329. in order to get the updated 128-bit extensions required for online 
  330. banking with Microsoft Money (U.S. and Canadian users only). Until 
  331. these extensions are installed, you will not be able to do online 
  332. banking.

  334. Norton Utilities and Norton Navigator
  335. -------------------------------------
  336. - Norton Utilities version 2.0 is not compatible with the Internet 
  337.   Explorer 4.0 Recycle Bin because of new features that have been 
  338.   added to Internet Explorer.
  339.  
  340. - If you are running Norton Navigator, note that the Control Panel 
  341.   shortcuts on the Start menu do not work.
  342.  
  343. - If you reposition the taskbar to the left or right side of your 
  344.   desktop, the Norton Navigator quick launch area disappears.
  345.  
  346. - If you are running Norton Navigator, you need to disable the 
  347.   Norton Taskbar feature in order to use the functionality of 
  348.   the new Internet Explorer 4.0 taskbar.
  349.

  353. Procomm Plus 95: Browser Properties Control Doesn't Work
  354. --------------------------------------------------------
  355. In the Procomm Plus 95 Web browser, the Browser Properties control on 
  356. the Setup menu does not work. However, you can set browser properties 
  357. by double-clicking the Internet icon in the Windows Control Panel. 
  358. Property settings for the Internet Explorer 4.0 browser will also 
  359. apply to the Procomm browser.

  361. Telcom Fax: Unable to Send Network Faxes
  362. ----------------------------------------
  363. This product currently does not work with Internet Explorer 4.0. 
  364. For information about Telcom Fax 4.0, which is compatible with 
  365. Internet Explorer 4.0, contact the manufacturer or visit their 
  366. eb site at http://www.ltc.com.
