  18. Welcome to Symantec's Visual Page Evaluation for Windows 95 
  19. and Windows NT.  This is a fully functional version of the retail 
  20. product, but with a 30 day end-user license agreement. Please take 
  21. a few minutes to read this file which contains the latest information 
  22. regarding this release.

  28. II. Minimum System Requirements

  30. IBM PC or 100% compatible
  31. Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 
  32. 486-66 Mhz or above
  33. 20 MB free hard disk space
  34. VGA (256 colors are required for previewing Java Applets)
  35. 8 MB of RAM for Windows 95
  36. 12 MB of RAM for Windows NT

  41. III.  Installation Notes
  42. =================================================================

  44. Installing from Symantec's Web Site
  45. -----------------------------------
  46. If you download the files from our Web site, please copy them 
  47. into an empty directory.  To expand the installation files, run 
  48. the executable from File > Run, or at a DOS prompt.  Once 
  49. expanded, run SETUP.EXE to install Visual Page.  
  50.  
  51. If you choose not to download the full version of the Evaluation,
  52. you may at any time download individual supporting files, such 
  53. as the Tour (Getting Started).  Place these supporting
  54. files; e.g. tour.bin, into the directory containing the 
  55. installer and then run Setup.exe.
  56.  
  57. Note: When downloading individual components (*.bin)
  58. Netscape Communicator may incorrectly append an extension 
  59. to the file name.  Once the file has been downloaded to your 
  60. computer please rename the file to contain the appropriate 
  61. extension; e.g. help.bin, tour.bin, or template.bin.
  62.  
  63. In the web release we have included the Getting Started manual in
  64. PDF format which is optimized for printing, because of this
  65. some images may appear blurry when viewed through Acrobat Reader. 
  66.  
  67. Instructions for running the Getting Started tour are located
  68. in \Visual Page\Tour\tour.pdf.
  69.  
  70. As with any new software, please install Visual Page into a 
  71. clean directory.

  74. Installing Starbase's Versions Software
  75. ---------------------------------------
  76. An evaluation copy of Starbase's Versions source control software has 
  77. been included on the Visual Page CD and is also available as a separate
  78. download from our Web site. During the installation process you will be
  79. prompted for a serial number and a key. Click the Next button to continue. 
  80. You will be asked if you want to install an evaluation copy. Select Yes.

  93. IV.  User Tips
  94. =================================================================

  96. Q: How do I retain my entries in the custom dictionary if I 
  97.    reinstall Visual Page to a different drive, directory or 
  98.    another machine?
  99.  
  100. A: The Visual Page uninstaller will not remove the custom.pd file
  101.    in the \Visual Page directory containing custom entries for
  102.    the user dictionary.  If you choose to install Visual Page into 
  103.    another directory or machine and wish to retain the dictionary,
  104.    copy the custom.pd file into the Visual Page root directory of 
  105.    the new install. The installer will also not write over an 
  106.    existing custom.pd.

  108. Q: I noticed after uninstalling Visual Page the install directory 
  109.    was not deleted. 
  110.  
  111. A: The Visual Page installer logs all files installed with the 
  112.    exception of the initial spell checker's custom user
  113.    dictionary, custom.pd. Should you choose to uninstall Visual
  114.    Page, this file, and other files created after installation, 
  115.    will not be uninstalled.

  117. Q: I'm using frames with mixed border widths, however Netscape 
  118.    displays the entire frameset using the border width of the first 
  119.    frame.
  120.  
  121. A: Netscape uses the first border width value encountered
  122.    and applies it to the entire frameset.   
  123.  
  124. Q: How do I run QuickTime Movies?
  125.  
  126. A: In order to run QuickTime Movies in Symantec Visual Page, you 
  127.    will need to obtain the QuickTime software from Apple Computer,
  128.    Inc. At the time this file was written, the QuickTime files 
  129.    were available at http://quicktime.apple.com.

  133. Q: I have 256 color video capabilities but my applets do not 
  134.    appear in preview mode.  
  135.  
  136. A: It is not uncommon for vendors of Java applications to
  137.    install any supporting virtual machine (VM) or Just-In-Time 
  138.    (JIT) compiler files into the system directory.  Check your 
  139.    Windows and system directories (system32 for NT) for 
  140.    JAVAI.DLL and AWT.DLL.  Rename the file(s) to *.SAV and 
  141.    relaunch Visual Page.

  144. Q: How can I determine why my applet won't run in preview mode?
  145.  
  146. A: Place the HTML file in preview mode. Select Show Java Console 
  147.    from the View menu. All Java errors are displayed within this window.  
  148.    In many cases, it is likely that Visual Page is unable
  149.    to find one or more supporting class files for the applet.  This 
  150.    may occur if your applet contains a custom component. Create an 
  151.    environment variable for the Classpath variable. Point the 
  152.    Classpath variable to the zip file that contains the class file.
  153.    
  154.    In Windows 95, place a statement similar to the one below in the 
  155.    AUTOEXEC.BAT:
  156.  
  157.    Set Classpath=C:\directoryname\classfile.zip.
  158.  
  159.   
  160.    In Windows NT Choose Start > Control Panel > System. Select the 
  161.    Environment Tab in the System Properties dialog box. Enter the 
  162.    word Classpath in the Variable field. Enter the path to the zip 
  163.    file containing the classes in the Value field.

  167. V.  Known Problems and Workarounds  
  168. ================================================================
  169. o   List boxes and drop down lists do not function in Preview mode.
  170.  
  171. o   Canceling a remote file download leaves a zero byte file.
  172.  
  173. o   When converting 24 bit (true color or 16 million color)
  174.     BMP files to GIF files, the palette may not be saved with the 
  175.     image.  As a result the image may appear as a black square.  
  176.     We recommend you manually convert the image with an external
  177.     program and then add the GIF to your HTML file. 
  178.  
  179. o   Columns that span across multiple pages may not appear when 
  180.     printing from the Visual Editor.
  181.  
  182. o   The Printer Setup dialog fails to appear when invoked a second
  183.     time on an invalid or unavailable printer.  To reinstate the 
  184.     dialog you must select a valid printer in the Control Panel 
  185.     before selecting Printer Setup in Visual Page.

  187. o   The entities.htm file is located in the same directory as 
  188.     VPAGE.EXE.
