The file format used by Money 98 let the Money team create powerful features such as the Expert Assistant, the Goal Planner, and the Monthly Report (for Financial Suite users). You might notice that your converted Money 98 file is bigger than your old Money 95 or 97 files. However, youÆll find that MoneyÆs backup files are much smaller than your regular fileùso if you need to transfer a smaller version of your Money file, youÆll want to use the File/Backup command.
The Internet Quotes connection in Money works directly with the 32-bit
WinSock included with Windows 95. Most full-service Internet providers
(those not requiring custom software to access their service) will
support the 32-bit WinSock. If your provider uses a different method
? for example, if you use a non-Windows version of America Online or CompuServeùyou might need to start your Internet connection before starting Money.
If you have questions about your Internet connection compatibility, ask your service provider if they support the Windows 95 32-bit WinSock. Money does not include an Internet service provider.
You may also need 32-bit WinSock compatibility to use Online Banking, depending on your bankÆs type of Online Services.
MoneyÆs Internet Quotes will automatically start the connection to the Internet if your service provider uses the standard connection method included with Windows 95.
MONEY DOES NOT SUPPORT ONLINE QUOTES FROM FOREIGN STOCK EXCHANGES
The Money98 Help incorrectly states that it is possible to access
online quotes from quote servers in the US, Canada, Italy, France,
Germany, UK and Australia using a two letter prefix. Money98 does not
support this feature. Additionally, there are no online quotes
available for Australia in Money 98
3: Using a fast modem
Using a high speed modem (faster than 9600 baud) with an older UART (the computer chip that controls the serial port) can result in transmission errors. Any 14.4 Kbps or faster modem requires the 16550AFN UART. Older UARTs might be labeled 8250 or 16450.
To find out what kind of UART your computer has:
1. On the Windows 95 Start menu, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Modems.
3. Click the Diagnostics tab.
4. Highlight the port you want to check, then click the More Info button.
5. Windows will test your modem and report the results.
6. The type of UART you have will be listed in the Port Information section.
7. If you have an 8250 or 16450 UART, click OK, then follow steps 8-13. If you have a 16550 UART, your hardware is up to date.
8. Click the General tab.
9. Click Properties.
10. Click the Connection tab.
11. Click Port Settings.
12. Make sure the Use FIFO Buffers checkbox is NOT checked. Click OK.
13. Try your modem connection again. If you still have problems, you should upgrade your serial card to one with the 16550AFN UART.
4: DISPLAY COLOUR SETTINGS
Money 98, including its multimedia tours, is designed to work in 256-colour mode.
Money 98 does not support 16-colour mode.
To check/change your colour mode:
1. On the Windows 95 Start menu, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Display.
3. Click the Settings tab.
4. Check the Colour Palette setting to see which mode your computer is running in. If your video card supports 256 colours, youÆll see that option in the Colour Palette drop-down menu.
5. Choose 256 Colour from the list, then click OK. Windows will ask if you want to restart the computer so the change can take effect.
5: ONLINE SERVICES WITH WINDOWS NT
Money can not automatically establish an Internet connection in Windows NT. If you use Windows NT, you need to connect to the Internet before starting Money to access any of MoneyÆs online features.
If youÆre using NT 4.0 and you have problems changing your dialling properties or creating a network connection, you might need to simply configure RAS to use TCP/IP:
1) Go to Control Panel, then to Network. Under the Services tab, click Add, and select Remote Access Service. Click OK and restart your computer when prompted.
2) If you get errors indicating that the service didnÆt start, go to the Protocols tab of the Network control panel and install the Point to Point Tunnelling Protocol.
3) After you reboot, go back to the Services tab in the Network control panel.
Select Remote Access Service and click Properties.
4) Your modem should be listed. If it isnÆt listed, you need to add it in the Modem control panel. Select your Modem and click Configure.
5) Make sure that Dial out only or Dial out and Receive calls is selected. Click OK.
6) Click the Network button.
7) Make sure TCP/IP is the only protocol selected.
8) Click OK and restart your computer when prompted.
If you still have trouble, the following might help you diagnose your problem:
1) From My Computer, select Dial-Up Networking.
2) Select New to create a new phonebook entry
3) Type a fake phone number and select the server tab.
Make sure TCP/IP is selected as your protocol.
4) Click OK.
6: SETUP FAILS TO REGISTER SCHANNEL.DLL
If you use Windows 95 and Money setup fails because it could not register Schannel.dll, try removing any networking applications from your Windows StartUp folder. Then reboot Windows and run Money Setup again.
To remove applications from your StartUp folder:
1. On the Windows 95 Start menu, point to Settings, then click Taskbar.
2. Click the Start Menu Programs tab.
3. Under Customise Start Menu, click Remove.
4. Click the plus sign beside the folder Programs, then click the plus sign beside the folder StartUp.
5. Highlight any networking program you see.
6. Click Remove. This will not delete the program. It will only remove it from the menu.
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for all of your networking applications, then click Close.
8. Restart Windows and reinstall Money.
9. To put networking applications back in the StartUp folder, see Windows Help.
7: DISPLAY DRIVERS
If youÆre using an ATI display driver and you notice graphics problems in Moneyùsuch as badly drawn graphs and charts, or black bars where your account balances should beùplease use the SVGA display driver that comes with Windows.
To check/change your display driver:
1. On the Windows 95 Start menu, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Display.
3. Click the Settings tab.
4. Click Change Display Type.
5. If you see an ATI driver in the Adapter Type field, you may wish to change to the Windows driver.
6. To switch drivers, click the Change button next to the Adapter Type field.
7. Select Show All Devices, then, on the ManufacturerÆs menu, highlight (Standard Display Types) from the top of the list.
8. On the Models menu, highlight Super VGA, then click OK. Windows will ask if you want to restart the computer so the change can take effect.
8: PRINTER DRIVERS
If you have a Canon BJ-330, C-Itoh 8510, or IBM PPII 2381 printer, you might experience problems printing cheques. You can get an updated driver from the manufacturer.
9: PROBLEM PRINTING PARTIAL SHEETS OF CHEQUES ON INKJET PRINTERS.
Printing partial sheets of cheques (single-sheet style) is not supported with inkjet-printer technology. (A partial sheet of cheques is when you have removed at least one of the cheques from a single sheet prior to loading the sheet of cheques into the printer.) Inkjet printers include the Hewlett-Packard (HP) DeskJet models and Canon Bubblejet series printers.
You can print partial sheets of Laser Voucher cheques with inkjet-style printers, or print Laser Standard or Laser Wallet cheques in batches of three.
Because the DeskJet and Bubblejet series printers do not support manual feed, it is difficult to align and print on partial sheets of cheques. Depending on the feed mechanism of the printer, the following method might work to feed partial cheque sheets:
1. Load the partial sheet (2 cheques) into the printer as if it were a full sheet. Push the sheet all the way into the tray.
2. From the File menu, choose Print Cheques.
3. Verify the number of cheques to print.
4. If the number of cheques to print is incorrect:
a. Choose Select Cheques, or Selected Cheques in Money 4.0 and 5.0.
b. Select up to the number of cheques remaining on the partial sheet.
c. Choose OK.
5. Make sure the correct cheque number for the first cheque is entered.
6. Make sure the number of cheques remaining box is cleared. Click OK.
NOTE: This method works well with DeskJet, Bubblejet, and Stylus printers.

10: HOW TO INSTALL MICROSOFT VIDEO CODECS IN WINDOWS 95.
CODECS are used to play compressed files by decompressing them in memory.
Adding a specific Codec lets you play files compressed in that file format. Removing and reinstalling a Codec may solve problems playing a particular file type.
If the codec used to compress the file is not listed, use the following steps to install that codec:
1. In Control Panel, double-click Add New Hardware.
2. Click Next, click No, and then click Next.
3. Click Sound, Video, And Game Controllers, and then click Next.
4. Click Microsoft Video CODECS from the manufactures list, then select RLE.
5. Click OK.

1. In Control Panel, double-click Multimedia.
2. Click the Devices Tab.
3. Click Add.

12: TOUR REQUIREMENTS
? You must have the Money 98 CD in your CD-ROM drive in order to view any of MoneyÆs multimedia tours.
? If you installed Money from floppy diskettes or have a trial version downloaded from the Web, you wonÆt be able to view the tours.
? To run the tour you need to have RLE CODECS installed. See #10 and #11 above.
? The tours are best experienced when your speakers are turned on and the volume is set appropriately.
? You must have Active Movie 1.0 or later and IE 3.02a or later installed.
Money installs these automatically when you install Money 98; if you have manually removed either of these applications, youÆll need to reinstall Money from your CD in order to view the tours.
? Your IE security settings must be set to the default or lower.
13: IE SETTINGS.
1. Select View from the Internet Explorer
2. Click on Options, and select the Security tab.
3. Ensure that the checkboxes in Active Content are selected.
4. Click the Safety Level button, and select Security Method, High (recommended for all users)
Note: IE302a or later needed, but will still allow you to use your default browser.
14: Reinstall Money after installing Netcom
Installing Netcom after you have installed Money 98 will put Money in an unstable state. You need to reinstall Money 98 after you install Netcom.
15: Reinstall Money after installing early versions of Netscape
Installing a version of Netscape prior to Communicator 4.0 after you have installed Money 98 will put Money in an unstable state. You need to reinstall Money 98 after you install a pre-Communicator 4.0 version of Netscape.
16: Money not compatible with IE 4.0 BETA
Please upgrade to the release version of IE 4.0 before using Money.
17: Money not compatible with Memphis BETA
But it will be fully compatible with the released version.
Please upgrade to the final release of Memphis to use Money 98.
18: The version of MSN supplied on the Money CD ROM not compatible with IE 4.0
If you install IE 4.0, you will not be able to use the version of MSN installed with Money 98.
19: Money and IE 3.02a
Installing Money 98 over IE 3.02a might produce warnings that ask whether you want to keep some of the files that are already on your hard drive. Answer ôNo,ö and let Money 98 overwrite those files.
20: Disable remote Winsock if you dial up directly to the internet
If you are establishing Dial-Up connections directly to the Internet (using an Internet Service Provider or Dial-Up connection through MSN), you need to disable remote Winsock. You do NOT need to disable Remote Winsock if you are dialling into a LAN or using a corporate Intranet.
1. Click Start, Settings, then choose Control Panel.
2. Click Winsock Proxy Client.
3. Clear the checkbox for ôEnable Winsock Proxy Client.ö
21: Run Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack #3
If you are running Windows NT 4.0, you need to install Service Pack #3 (or later) in order to use Money 98 successfully. You can find the latest Service Pack at http://www.microsoft.com/NTServerSupport/Content/ServicePacks/Where.htm. Just click the NT SP3 (128 bit version) link.
22: If you have trouble with online features and youÆre using IE 4.0
If you install Money 98 after youÆve installed IE 4.0, you might need to download schannel.dll from the Money web site in order to use Online Statements and Online Bill Payment. Install this fix ONLY if you are using IE 4.0 and have received an error message telling you that you need to.
To install the fix, connect to the Microsoft Money Home Page. You can do this
from within Money 98, by choosing Microsoft on the Web from the Help menu. Or
simply use your browser to connect to http://www.microsoft.com/Money/
