OCR: Factfile B The newspaper's launch on May 4, 1896, was the beginning of a great adventure, and the birth of modern journalism. At the close of the century, newspapers had lost their way. They amounted to little more than verbatim accounts of political speeches, un- edited court reports, and lists from the money markets, presented in column after column of close-spaced type with few or no illustrations. Newspaper bosses despaired about circulation figures and wondered why they did not increase. The answer was that they provided nothing more than ponderous reading for businessmen, with limited appeal to the ordinary man, and even less to the ordinary woman who was regarded as unworthy
