  54. The setup program will also install QuickTime for Windows on
  55. your system.  QuickTime is used to play the movies contained
  56. within (and is required to run) Discovering Endangered Wildlife.
  57. If you already have QuickTime on your system, it will be updated.
  58.  
  59. Note: If you see any error messages during the setup of QuickTime
  60. for Windows, you may need to make system adjustments (i.e. free up
  61. some hard disk space or close other programs to free up memory),
  62. and then reinstall QuickTime for Windows.  You may reinstall Quick
  63. Time for Windows without reinstalling Discovering Endangered
  64. Wildlife by running the SETUP.EXE program located in the QT sub-
  65. directory of the CD.

  70. If you experience any difficulties installing or running DEW, you
  71. may wish to scan the notes below as well as those in the
  72. Troubleshooting section of the online "Wildlife User's Guide".

  74. Video ----------------
  75.  
  76. * If SETUP told you that your video adaptor does not currently
  77.   support 256 colors, yet you're sure that it does (or so the ad
  78.   for your computer said...), the problem is most likely that the
  79.   current video driver loaded by Windows supports only 16 colors.
  80.  
  81.   First, run Windows SETUP and see if there is a 256 driver
  82.   available.  Windows ships a SVGA 256 color driver that will
  83.   work with most video cards.  Install the Windows SVGA driver,
  84.   restart Windows, then restart the game.  
  85.  
  86.   If you couldn't find the Windows SVGA driver, check to see 
  87.   if your computer or video card came with a diskette which 
  88.   contains the proper video driver...
  89.  
  90.   If that doesn't work, check CompuServe, AOL, or Prodigy for
  91.   drivers...
  92.  
  93.   If that doesn't work (at which point you're probably ready to
  94.   throw something... but relax, life's too short...),  check with
  95.   either (a) the company you bought your computer from; or
  96.   (b) the video card manufacturer.  One of them should be able to
  97.   supply you with the latest drivers.

  99. * If your PC's video card supports more than 256 colors (eg,
  100.   32,000 or 64,000), and you wish to use Windows in one of these
  101.   video modes, you may need more than 8 MB of memory (RAM) to use
  102.   DEW.  If you run into problems, try switching your video driver
  103.   to it's 256 color mode, which uses less memory.

  105. Audio ----------------
  106.  
  107. * Discovering Endangered Wildlife uses "Extended Midi" (as opposed
  108.   to Basic Midi).  Most sound cards sold in the past couple years
  109.   are automatically setup for Extended Midi.  If you do not hear
  110.   any music when you run the program, check the MIDI MAPPER
  111.   section of the Windows Control Panel to make sure that Extended
  112.   Midi is enabled.

  114. RAM ----------------
  115.  
  116. * DEW tends to run better when you don't have many other apps
  117.   open at the same time.  If you fail to hear either midi (music)
  118.   or narration, try closing some windows and trying again.
  119.  
  120. * If pictures mysteriously disappear, it is almost definitely a
  121.   low RAM situation (we're pushing a lot of 256 color images
  122.   around...).  We've found that systems without a permanent swap
  123.   file need to have 10 MB of free disk space before you start
  124.   Windows in order to provide Windows with enough working storage.
  125.   Check in CONTROL panel.

  127. Fonts ----------------

  129. * If you get some strange looking font instead of Lyriq's
  130.   Discovery Bold, run CONTROL panel and install Discovery Bold
  131.   from the D:\DEW\FONTS directory (assuming that D: is your CD-ROM
  132.   drive).

  135. Getting: your videos to run quicker/smoother:
  136. To make your videos run more smoothly (ie. on slow machines), check that
  137. the DEW.INI file in your installation directory contains the line
  138. CPU=1
  139. If you have a faster machines eg. pentium, and wish to view better
  140. quality videos, then set the line to be:
