  3. text x_scr1=     The Bengal tiger has several cousins.  In fact there were once eight kinds of tigers: the Bengal, Siberian, Caspian, Indochinese, Chinese, Sumatran, Javan, and Bali tigers.
  4. text x_jig1=     Siberians were the first subspecies of tiger.  They lived in very snowy, cold climates and had the most FUR of all tigers.~     Thousands of years ago, they moved to the warmer south, where their heavy coats became thinner.
  5. text x_jig2=     Did you know tigers are excellent long-distance SWIMMERS?  They've been known to swim across rivers that are six miles wide.  One strong Bengal tiger swam 18 miles in just one day!
  6. text x_tic1=     Tigers can make amazing leaps.  One tiger's LEAP was measured at 33 feet!  Thats about the length of three small cars parked end to end!

  14. text x_sclMed=    You're right!~   Male Bengal tigers can be up to nine feet long, not counting their TAILS, which can be as long as three feet.  Bengals are the second-largest tigers in the world!  Only Siberians are larger.  Adult male Bengal tigers can weigh up to 550 pounds, the females can weigh up to 350 pounds.

  16. text x_sclSml=    I don't think so!~   A Bengal tiger this size would likely go hungry.  It would certainly have a difficult time catching the large animals it usually eats.
  17. text x_cls1=     Just like a house cat, tigers have retractable front claws. They flex their claws to snag their prey or pull them back so they don't trip when walking across the tangled jungle floor.
  18. text x_cls2=     The Bengal tiger lives in swampy or grassy areas, where its striped coat provides perfect camouflage.  Bengal tigers have lush coats of reddish-orange fur marked with striking black stripes.  Each tiger's facial stripes are different - some experts think that's how tigers recognise each other.
  19. text x_snd1=   The tigers' mighty roar is feared by every animal in the jungle.  In addition to their roar, tigers communicate to others by growling and purring.

  23. text x_bok1=   About 40 years ago, a rajah found a tiger cub who was WHITE with black stripes.  The rajah had heard stories about white tigers, but no one had ever found a living one.  So, he took the cub back to his palace.
  24. text x_bok1a=   When the cub grew up, the rajah found a yellow female to be the white tiger's mate.  Their cubs, it turned out, had one chance in four of being white.  Today, all the white tigers in the world are descended from that one male white tiger.
  25. text x_eat1=   Bengals hunt for many large animals - antelope, buffalo, deer, pigs, and an animal that looks like an ox called a gaur.

  27. text x_hab1=   Bengal tigers make their homes in many places, including tropical rain forests, pine forests, SWAMPS, grasslands, savannahs, and even rocky areas.  A tiger can survive in its habitat as long as it has animals to hunt, water for drinking and keeping cool, and a safe place for its cubs.
  28. text x_uni1=   Tigers prowl the night. That's when they do most of their travelling and hunting. They may be active also at dusk and dawn.
  29. text x_uni2=   Tigers need to stay cool in the steamy jungles of India. Often the tiger will go to the nearest river or stream and plop right in.  After its swim, the tiger lounges in the shallow water and uses its long tail to COOL itself by splashing water onto its back.

  31. text x_sil1=   A female Bengal usually has two to three cubs in her litter, although she can have as many as six. The father provides no help raising his cubs, although he may hunt with the mother.
  32. text x_MainThreat=   Tigers need lots of room to live in the wild.  The population of India is growing, and the Bengal tigers are losing parts of their habitat to farms and new development. What was once tiger habitat is being turned into fields for agriculture or communities. 
  33. text x_mainSol1=   If you want to help preserve the Bengal tiger, you might want to support some of the organisations that are trying to help tigers. The World Wildlife Fund is working with the Indian government on "Project Tiger" to find suitable homes for the big cats.  The IUCN (The World Conservation Union) is trying to find a balance between human and wildlife needs.
  34. text x_2ndThreat=   In the past, it was very sporting and exciting to go tiger hunting.  Unfortunately, the craze was so popular that the Bengal tiger population declined significantly.  Even after the Indian government realised that the tigers were in trouble, the passion for tiger skins continued.
  35. text x_2ndSol1=  It is now ILLEGAL to hunt Bengal tigers in India, and the laws are being enforced by local governments. The new laws have helped to discourage some poaching.  The tigers are more closely monitored by scientists and officials to help ensure their safety.
