  3. WELCOME TO PIPELINE, the premier Internet access software for home computer
  4. users and the three-time winner of PC Magazine's Editor's Choice award for 
  5. Internet access.

  7. Pipeline provides you with all the basic features of the Internet -- the   
  8. World Wide Web, USENET Newsgroups, electronic mail, file transfer protocol 
  9. (FTP), Internet Relay Chat (IRC) and more -- in one easy to install and 
  10. use software package.  And, we also provide you with 14 free days of 
  11. unlimited   Internet access to begin your journey into cyberspace!

  38. MANAGING YOUR PIPELINE ACCOUNT     
  39.  
  40. Pipeline makes it easy to manage your own account housekeeping.  Click on 
  41. Pipeline Software and Services off of the main menu and select My Pipeline 
  42. Account to change your password, see how many hours you've spent online, 
  43. create your own personal web page, add a household account, change your 
  44. payment plan, or write a description of yourself for other Pipeline members 
  45. to see.

  47. ELECTRONIC MAIL     
  48. Pipeline offers you access to electronic mail on the Internet.  When you   
  49. connect to Pipeline, a window will automatically pop up, showing you a   
  50. listing of all the "emails" waiting for you in your mailbox.  You can also 
  51. access your mailbox by clicking on the "Mail" icon and selecting the   
  52. "Inbox" folder.  Your email address begins with your username and ends with 
  53. @uk.pipeline.com.  For example, if you are user "bigben", your email address 
  54. would be bigben@uk.pipeline.com.

  56. To write a message, click on the "Write" icon just beneath the "Mail" icon. 
  57. You will need to know the email address of the person you wish to "email." 
  58. Email addresses generally look like this:     user@host...  
  59.  
  60. For example, the support email address is support@uk.pipeline.com.     
  61.  
  62. SHORTCUT:  If you are emailing another person in the UK who also has a 
  63. Pipeline account, you can just type in their username and leave off the 
  64. "@uk.pipeline.com".

  66. EXPLORE THE INTERNET     
  67. The types and forms of information available on the Internet are enormous   
  68. and growing everyday.  Luckily there are reference guides and tools to help
  69. you find what you are looking for, and we make it even easier by providing
  70. you with subject-oriented menus to set you on your way.  Pipeline provides 
  71. you with 10 subject categories to help you begin your adventure into 
  72. cyberspace.  Each catgeory includes popular and useful web sites, gopher 
  73. sites and files.

  87. In addition to the Pipeline menus, there are loads of search tools -- like
  88. "Veronica," "Archie," and "Jughead" -- available to help you locate   
  89. information on the Internet.  Some of the well known World Wide Web 
  90. "search engines" can be found under the "Exploring the Internet" category on   
  91. the main Pipeline menu.

  93. NEWSGROUPS     
  94. The USENET "news" system is a collection of some 15,000 discussion groups on 
  95. any and every subject you can imagine.  Your Pipeline software comes with 
  96. several newsgroups initialized to get you started, including some newsgroups 
  97. that are for Pipeline members only!  The Pipeline newsgroups are a great 
  98. place to get your feet wet before venturing out into the wider world of 
  99. USENET newsgroups. You might start out "lurking" to get the hang of how 
  100. people interact in the newsgroups -- jump into the conversation whenever 
  101. you are ready and have something to say!  The Pipeline members-only 
  102. newsgroups include:

  110. HINT:  To update your newsgroup lists, click on the News icon off of the   
  111. main menu and pull down the "Actions" menu.  From here select "add a new 
  112. group."  Pipeline will download the current newsgroup list when you select
  113. the category of groups that are of interest.  Scroll through the list and  
  114. double click on any group that you want to add to your newsgroup folder.

  116. WORLD WIDE WEB     
  117. The World Wide Web, or the Web as it's commonly referred to, is one of the 
  118. hottest and fastest growing features of the Internet.  The Web offers a   
  119. graphical, easy to navigate view of information on the Internet.  Each web 
  120. (or "home") page has links to other web pages, providing endless hours of 
  121. Web surfing.  You can access the Web using Pipeline's internal web browser, 
  122. or you can add Netscape to your Winsock applications menu and use that as 
  123. an alternative to the internal browser.  Click on the "Web" icon on the main 
  124. menu to use the Pipeline browser.  NOTE:  The items in the main Pipeline 
  125. "gopher" menus that have a little webicon next to them are other access 
  126. routes into the Web.

  128. INTERNET RELAY CHAT (IRC)     
  129. IRC is a real-time conversation tool that allows you to chat with people   
  130. from all over the world, anytime day or night.  The IRC "channels" or 
  131. "chatrooms" focus on specific issues or topics.  Select Internet Chat (IRC) 
  132. from the Internet pull-down menu off of the main menu to see what IRC is all   
  133. about.

  135. WINSOCK     
  136. Pipeline members can now use various Winsock compliant applications in   
  137. conjunction with their Pipeline account.  You can now add Netscape, Mosaic,
  138. mIRC, RealAudio, World's Chat and WS FTP to your Pipeline account by   
  139. selecting WinsockApps from the main menu.     
  140.  
  141. BELLS & WHISTLES     
  142. Talk - Pipeline's "Talk" feature allows you to page another Pipeline  
  143. subscriber and have a real-time conversation.  To try Talk, select Talk   
  144. (chat with someone) from the Services pull down menu off of the main menu.

  146. Startup Bookmark - By putting a URL or Web page address in your startup   
  147. bookmark file, you will be able to go directly to your favorite Web site   
  148. everytime you dial in to Pipeline.  Once you get to a place on the Internet 
  149. that you would like to frequent, click on "Bookmarks!" from the main 
  150. pulldown menu and a bookmark for that location will be added to your 
  151. bookmark file.  To put that web page address in your Startup file, find the 
  152. desired entry in your bookmark folder and drag it into the Startup folder.

  154. UUencoded newsgroup articles - Pipeline makes it easy to decode pictures   
  155. and graphics that can be found in the alt.binaries newsgroups.  Simply   
  156. highlight the file you want to decode, select "get UUencoded articles" under 
  157. the "Action" pulldown menu, and follow the instructions in the   window.     
  158. Mail and News Filtering - Pipeline's sophisticated filtering system allows 
  159. you to redirect or save messages and newsgroup postings based upon the   
  160. sender, the date or the subject.

  162. Personal profile - You can create your own personal profile, which other   
  163. Pipeline members can access, by going to "Update my Personal Information"  
  164. under My Pipeline Account.     
  165.  
  166. Who's Online - Pipeline's Who's Online feature allows you to view what other 
  167. members are online either by name or by city.  Look under Pipeline Software 
  168. and Services for this feature.
