(FTP), Internet Relay Chat (IRC) and more -- in one easy to install and
use software package. And, we also provide you with 14 free days of
unlimited Internet access to begin your journey into cyberspace!

We even have an email address where you can send all your suggestions for
improving our service: suggest@uk.pipeline.com.
MANAGING YOUR PIPELINE ACCOUNT
Pipeline makes it easy to manage your own account housekeeping. Click on
Pipeline Software and Services off of the main menu and select My Pipeline
Account to change your password, see how many hours you've spent online,
create your own personal web page, add a household account, change your
payment plan, or write a description of yourself for other Pipeline members
to see.
ELECTRONIC MAIL
Pipeline offers you access to electronic mail on the Internet. When you
connect to Pipeline, a window will automatically pop up, showing you a
listing of all the "emails" waiting for you in your mailbox. You can also
access your mailbox by clicking on the "Mail" icon and selecting the
"Inbox" folder. Your email address begins with your username and ends with
@uk.pipeline.com. For example, if you are user "bigben", your email address
would be bigben@uk.pipeline.com.
To write a message, click on the "Write" icon just beneath the "Mail" icon.
You will need to know the email address of the person you wish to "email."
Email addresses generally look like this: user@host...
For example, the support email address is support@uk.pipeline.com.
SHORTCUT: If you are emailing another person in the UK who also has a
Pipeline account, you can just type in their username and leave off the
"@uk.pipeline.com".
EXPLORE THE INTERNET
The types and forms of information available on the Internet are enormous
and growing everyday. Luckily there are reference guides and tools to help
you find what you are looking for, and we make it even easier by providing
you with subject-oriented menus to set you on your way. Pipeline provides
you with 10 subject categories to help you begin your adventure into
cyberspace. Each catgeory includes popular and useful web sites, gopher
sites and files.
The main menu categories are:
The UK and Beyond
Now Featuring...
Exploring the Internet
Arts and Entertainment
In the News
Reference Desk
People and Lifestyles
Business World Online

Search the Pipeline
In addition to the Pipeline menus, there are loads of search tools -- like
"Veronica," "Archie," and "Jughead" -- available to help you locate
information on the Internet. Some of the well known World Wide Web
"search engines" can be found under the "Exploring the Internet" category on
the main Pipeline menu.
NEWSGROUPS
The USENET "news" system is a collection of some 15,000 discussion groups on
any and every subject you can imagine. Your Pipeline software comes with
several newsgroups initialized to get you started, including some newsgroups
that are for Pipeline members only! The Pipeline newsgroups are a great
place to get your feet wet before venturing out into the wider world of
USENET newsgroups. You might start out "lurking" to get the hang of how
people interact in the newsgroups -- jump into the conversation whenever
you are ready and have something to say! The Pipeline members-only
newsgroups include:
pipeline.uk.novice - Newer Pipeline members learn about Pipeline and the
Internet
pipeline.uk.windows - Technical help for members using Pipeline for Windows
pipeline.uk.grapevine - Pipeline members social discussion group
pipeline.uk.help - Answer questions on the Pipeline service and the Internet
HINT: To update your newsgroup lists, click on the News icon off of the
main menu and pull down the "Actions" menu. From here select "add a new
group." Pipeline will download the current newsgroup list when you select
the category of groups that are of interest. Scroll through the list and
double click on any group that you want to add to your newsgroup folder.
WORLD WIDE WEB
The World Wide Web, or the Web as it's commonly referred to, is one of the
hottest and fastest growing features of the Internet. The Web offers a
graphical, easy to navigate view of information on the Internet. Each web
(or "home") page has links to other web pages, providing endless hours of
Web surfing. You can access the Web using Pipeline's internal web browser,
or you can add Netscape to your Winsock applications menu and use that as
an alternative to the internal browser. Click on the "Web" icon on the main
menu to use the Pipeline browser. NOTE: The items in the main Pipeline
"gopher" menus that have a little webicon next to them are other access
routes into the Web.
INTERNET RELAY CHAT (IRC)
IRC is a real-time conversation tool that allows you to chat with people
from all over the world, anytime day or night. The IRC "channels" or
"chatrooms" focus on specific issues or topics. Select Internet Chat (IRC)
from the Internet pull-down menu off of the main menu to see what IRC is all
about.
WINSOCK
Pipeline members can now use various Winsock compliant applications in
conjunction with their Pipeline account. You can now add Netscape, Mosaic,
mIRC, RealAudio, World's Chat and WS FTP to your Pipeline account by
selecting WinsockApps from the main menu.
BELLS & WHISTLES
Talk - Pipeline's "Talk" feature allows you to page another Pipeline
subscriber and have a real-time conversation. To try Talk, select Talk
(chat with someone) from the Services pull down menu off of the main menu.
Startup Bookmark - By putting a URL or Web page address in your startup
bookmark file, you will be able to go directly to your favorite Web site
everytime you dial in to Pipeline. Once you get to a place on the Internet
that you would like to frequent, click on "Bookmarks!" from the main
pulldown menu and a bookmark for that location will be added to your
bookmark file. To put that web page address in your Startup file, find the
desired entry in your bookmark folder and drag it into the Startup folder.
UUencoded newsgroup articles - Pipeline makes it easy to decode pictures
and graphics that can be found in the alt.binaries newsgroups. Simply
highlight the file you want to decode, select "get UUencoded articles" under
the "Action" pulldown menu, and follow the instructions in the window.
Mail and News Filtering - Pipeline's sophisticated filtering system allows
you to redirect or save messages and newsgroup postings based upon the
sender, the date or the subject.
Personal profile - You can create your own personal profile, which other
Pipeline members can access, by going to "Update my Personal Information"
under My Pipeline Account.
Who's Online - Pipeline's Who's Online feature allows you to view what other
members are online either by name or by city. Look under Pipeline Software
and Services for this feature.
These are just a few of Pipeline's "bells and whistles" -- stay tuned for
many more!
