INSTALLATION and DIAL-UP INFORMATION
WHAT YOU WILL FIND HERE:
1. Minimum and Ideal requirements for your computer system
2. List of Pipeline dial-up locations as of February 15th, 1996
*****************************************************************************
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
A 486/33 is the minimum for generally "acceptable" performance. Pipeline
will operate on 386/33 or faster 386 machines, however, the performance
is not optimal. Windows version 3.0 or higher is required. It has not been
thoroughly tested with Windows NT, but is known to work with this operating
system. Pipeline also works with Windows 95 and is now available as a 32bit
application.
HARD DRIVE SPACE - 4 MBs is the minimum, but 8MBs or more is highly
recommended (this is true for Windows in general). Approximately 5 MBs
available hard drive space to install the software, then several additional
MBs for downloading files and storing e-mail and newsgroup messages later
(a busy newsgroup can quite often use up 1 MB easily). The more files
downloaded from the Internet, the more hard disk space you will require.
MODEM - 9600 to 14.4K baud modem recommended. 28.8K is ideal, especially
for web browsing and transferring large files.
VIDEO DRIVER - Video driver needs to be set to 256 colours on some graphics
cards. You know you have one of these cards if you get an "overflow" error.
You may get better results by trying different colour settings (64K works
sometimes) or installing the latest graphics driver for your card (or the
standard SVGA Windows drivers). Consult your graphics card, monitor, or
computer manufacturer to see if they have an updated driver.

NEW USERS LOADING PIPELINE FROM A DISKETTE
Follow these directions (also printed on the diskette label):
1. Insert disk in 3.5" drive (A or B)
2. Choose "Run..." from the Program Manager file menu
3. Type A:setup or B:setup (depending upon which drive the disk is in) then
press ENTER.
4. The program files will now be installed on your computer.
5. After the Installation is complete, follow the directions on the screen
to register your Pipeline account.
IF YOU ARE INSTALLING PIPELINE THAT WAS DOWNLOADED FROM THE INTERNET
NOTE: The file was downloaded to a directory of your choice. If you're a
Pipeline user and you downloaded the file using Pipeline's ftp, the file was
most likely downloaded to c:\pipeline\user\your_user_name\download\, or to
the directory that you designated for your download directory. If you have
any problems or questions please call Pipeline Customer Support on
(01223) 577155.
1. Double click on the Windows "File Manager" application which is usually
found in the "Main" program group window.
2. Go to the directory where the PIPE34.EXE file was downloaded
(example: c:\pipeline\user\your_user_name\download\pipe34.exe). NOTE: It is
not required, but is recommended that you "move" the PIPE34.EXE file to a
temporary directory prior to extracting it.
3. Double click on the file "PIPE34.EXE". This is a self-extracting file so
just sit back and wait for it while it's extracting it's files.
4. When it's finished extracting, single click on the "File" pull down menu.
5. Single click on the "Run..." menu option.
6. In the box that pops up on the screen, type "setup" and then click the
"OK" button.
7. If you are using Pipeline and it is still running, you will receive a
warning window requesting you to close "One or more Visual Basic applications"
(Pipeline is a Visual Basic application) - if you do not receive this message
go to step 12.
8. To close Pipeline, press the Ctrl (control) and Esc (escape) keys at the
same time. A window pops up on the screen labeled "Task List".
9. If Pipeline is on the list, single click on "Pipeline" and then click on
the "End Task" button.
10. You will receive a window asking you if you want to exit Pipeline, click
on the "Yes" button.
11. Click on the "OK" button in the warning window that tells you "One or
more Visual Basic applications are running".
12. You are now at the Pipeline Setup screen. Follow the directions provided
on the screen. NOTE: If you extracted PIPE34.EXE into a temporary directory
you may want to go back and delete the files from that directory. This will
conserve space on your hard disk, and will avoid any conflicts when you
install future releases.
--------------- RUNNING OTHER PROGRAMS ------------------
As mentioned above, no other Visual Basic programs can be running when you
use the Pipeline Setup program. You will be prompted to turn them off if
they are running. If you still have problems, there is probably a conflict
with some other software or Windows components installed on your system.
If you have items in your startup group, try renaming the group to something
like "Startup Disabled". To do this, the group must be minimized, then you
need to select the Startup group icon, then hold down the "Alt" key and press
"Enter".
Also check the load= and run= lines in the file c:\windows\win.ini. If they
have text after the "=" sign, insert a ";" (semi-colon) at the beginning of
those lines. Next, restart Windows to ensure no extra programs are running
in the background that may be interfering with the Pipeline installation, and
try running setup again. Later, don't forget to remove the semi-colons and
restore your startup group name.
