  12. This file provides information for Shareware Distributors,
  13. Disk Vendors, BBS Sysops and Computer Clubs who wish to
  14. distribute the SKYMAP package.

  18. The SkyMap 3.0 package contains two versions of SkyMap;
  19. version 2.2 for Windows 3.1 and version 3.0 for Windows 95 and
  20. Windows NT. SkyMap 3.0 is greatly enhanced over v2.2 and runs
  21. more than 3x faster. The installation program will detect which
  22. operating system is running on your computer and will install
  23. the correct version of the program automatically.

  39. SkyMap is a large package, and is normally distributed as
  40. a ZIP archive. This should be called "SKYMAP30.ZIP".
  41. Of course, other file name extensions are perfectly acceptable
  42. when compression programs other than PKZIP are used.

  44. The package must be distributed "as is". You may add your
  45. own short promotional files to the package, but no files
  46. must be removed from it.

  52. SkyMap is a highly accurate "planetarium" for Windows 3.1,
  53. Windows 95 or Windows NT. It can draw a map of the sky, as seen
  54. from any place on Earth, for any date between 4000BC and 8000AD,
  55. displaying stars, planets, comets, deep-sky objects,
  56. constellation names and figures, and a whole lot more.  Detailed
  57. information about any object on a map can be obtained simply
  58. by clicking on it with the mouse, and high quality charts can be
  59. printed on any printer supported by Windows.  Pictures of
  60. objects, in several formats, can be associated with objects
  61. and displayed, either manually or automatically.

  67. SkyMap is a shareware "Planetarium" program for Microsoft
  68. Windows 3.1 or later. It will display a map of the sky as seen
  69. from any point on Earth for any date between 4000BC and 8000AD.
  70. Two different types of map can be drawn: a "Horizon" map showing
  71. the observer's local horizon, and a "Sky Area" map showing a
  72. detailed view of a small area of the sky.  You can "zoom in" on
  73. a map to a practically unlimited extent, and rapidly scroll
  74. around it.
  75.  
  76. There are many planetarium programs available today.  Unlike
  77. some of these, SkyMap makes no claims of blinding calculation
  78. speeds. Instead, what SkyMap concentrates on is accuracy.
  79. SkyMap uses the most accurate methods available to the author
  80. for all the calculations.  This accuracy makes SkyMap equally
  81. suited for both the novice astronomer who just wants to know
  82. "what's that bright object up there?" and the serious amateur
  83. or professional astronomer who wants a detailed "finder chart"
  84. for a faint galaxy.

  86. Examples of this accuracy are:
  87.  
  88.  -  Planetary positions have a mean error of less than half a
  89.     second of arc.
  90.  -  Star positions are rigorously corrected for the effects of
  91.     proper motion, precession, aberration, and refraction.
  92.     Planetary positions are corrected for aberration and
  93.     diurnal parallax.
  94.  
  95. SkyMap carries out its calculations in as efficient as manner as
  96. possible, but it never compromises accuracy for the sake of speed.
  97. An increase in speed can always be achieved by using a faster
  98. computer.

  100. The following information can be displayed on a map:
  101.  
  102. Stars:    SkyMap uses the SAO star catalog as the source of star
  103.           data. The shareware version of the program comes with a
  104.           database of 15,925 stars down to magnitude 7; the registered
  105.           registered version of the program is supplied with the
  106.           complete SAO catalog of 259,000 stars, and also has the
  107.           ability to display stars to below magnitude 15 from the
  108.           Hubble Guide Star Catalog (GSC), available separately as
  109.           a set of two CD-ROMs. Stars can be labelled with proper
  110.           names, Bayer letters, or Flamsteed numbers.

  112. Constellations: Constellation names, figures, and official IAU
  113.           boundaries can all be displayed.
  114.  
  115. Planets:  The Sun, Moon, and planets can be displayed, labelled
  116.           with their standard astronomical symbols or names.
  117.           The Moon is displayed with the correct phase and
  118.           orientation.
  119.  
  120. Comets:   The program maintains a catalog of comets, in which the
  121.           user may add, remove, and edit entries. Comets from the
  122.           catalog can be selected for display on the map.

  124. Asteroids: The program maintains a catalog of asteroids, which
  125.           operates in an identical way to the comet catalog.
  126.  
  127. Deep Sky Objects:  The complete Saguaro Astronomy Club (SAC) database
  128.           of 11,000 deep sky objects is available. This contains
  129.           the complete Messier, NGC, and IC catalogs, and the
  130.           brightest objects from more than 70 other catalogs. 
  131.           Detailed selection criteria can be used to select
  132.           objects for display. Objects are shown on the map with their
  133.           correct size and (for galaxies) orientation.

  135. Telescopes and eyepieces: The program maintains a catalog of telescopes
  136.           and eyepieces (both of which can be edited by the user).
  137.           Any eyepiece may be selected with any telescope, and the
  138.           resulting magnification and field of view displayed. A circle
  139.           showing the field of view can be displayed on the map.
  140.  
  141. Circles representing the view through a Telrad (TM) finder can be
  142.           displayed on the map.
  143.  
  144. The "track" of any moving object (planets, comets and asteroids) can be
  145.           displayed, showing where the object will be over a specified
  146.           period of time. Points on the track can be labelled with date
  147.           and the object's magnitude.
  148.  
  149. All types of object can be switched on or off with the click of
  150. the mouse, making it easy to see exactly the information you want,
  151. without being flooded with unwanted information.

  153. Detailed information about any object can be obtained simply by
  154. clicking the mouse on it.  In the case of planets, the displayed
  155. information includes both positional (RA, Dec, Distance) and
  156. physical (Magnitude, phase, light time, elongation, phase angle
  157. etc) information.

  159. When you have a map as you want it, it can be printed on any type
  160. of printer supported by Windows.  The printed map is not simply a
  161. copy of the screen; it is printed at the full resolution of the
  162. printer.  Maps printed on a laser printer compare favourably with
  163. high-quality star atlases such as "Uranometria 2000".  Maps can be
  164. printed in either black and white or colour.  If you have a colour 
  165. printer you can select the colour of each component of the map.

  167. SkyMap can also display photographic images, supplied in the
  168. form of GIF, BMP or PDS files.   Thousands of such images are
  169. freely available on bulletin boards and commercial information
  170. systems such as CompuServe. This allows you to build up your own
  171. personal library of astronomical photographs which, coupled with
  172. the map displays, really helps to bring the sky to life.  Images
  173. can either be displayed manually, or can be linked with specific
  174. objects and displayed by simply clicking on the object on the map.

  180. SkyMap 2.2 runs on any 386 or better computer supporting Windows 3.1.
  181. SkyMap 3.0 requires Windows 95 or Windows NT 3.51, and will run well
  182. on any computer on which either of these operating systems will run.
  183. A maths co-processor is not essential, but is strongly recommended;
  184. SkyMap does a huge amount of trigonometry, and use of a co-processor
  185. can speed the program up by a factor of 10 or more!

  187. For the display of photographic images, a video card capable of
  188. displaying 256 or more colours (simultaneously) is recommended.
  189. Images CAN be displayed on a standard 16-colour VGA display,
  190. but will generally look pretty terrible!

  192. Maps can be printed on any printer supported by Windows.  Good
  193. quality maps can be obtained even from a 9-pin dot matrix printer.
