-
- WHAT IS CLAUDE?
-
- CLAUDE is a program that lets you to hold a conversation with your computer. Of
- course, CLAUDE isn't very smart compared to a you, but it spells well!
-
-
- STARTING CLAUDE
-
- I assume you already know how to start a program at the DOS prompt and how to
- make a backup copy. Aside from that, CLAUDE is very simple to use. Just type
- your answers and press <ENTER> when your answer is complete. If you need help,
- press the <F1> key.
-
-
- STOPPING CLAUDE
-
- Press the <F10> key and CLAUDE will stop at once. Or type "goodbye" and press
- <ENTER>. When you do, CLAUDE says goodbye to you and ends.
-
-
- THE HELP WINDOWS
-
- Pressing the <F1> key displays a help menu. Choose any item on this menu by
- pressing the <UP/DOWN ARROW> keys until that item is highlighted. Press <ENTER>
- and help appears. To remove the help window, press a key. The menu will appear
- with EXIT HELP already highlighted.
-
-
- TALKING TO CLAUDE
-
- Talk to CLAUDE by typing what you want to say. CLAUDE waits until you press the
- <ENTER> key before it responds. This allows you to go back and change your
- answer before you <ENTER> it, and to correct any errors.
-
- Press the <DEL> key to erase the letter directly under the cursor. Press the
- <BACKSPACE> key to erase what is in the space immediately to the left of the
- cursor.
-
- You may also move the cursor without erasing anything. Press the <RIGHT/LEFT
- ARROW> keys to move one space, or press the <HOME> key to jump the cursor to the
- very start of your answer. Pressing the <END> key jumps the cursor to the end of
- your answer.
-
- After you press <ENTER> CLAUDE forms a response. During this time CLAUDE won't
- react to any keys you press. After CLAUDE has printed an answer it will respond
- once more to your key-presses.
-
-
-
- PRINTING YOUR CONVERSATION
-
- If you want to start CLAUDE with the printing option ON, start CLAUDE this way:
-
- C:> CLAUDE /p (or -p)
-
- You may also start a printout at any time by pressing <F5>. Pressing <F5> is
- like flipping a light switch. If printing was ON it will be turned OFF, and vice
- versa. A square appears in the status box when the printing option is turned ON.
-
- Whenever you start a printout, ALWAYS make sure your printer is turned on and
- has paper in it. Otherwise, CLAUDE freezes up and nothing happens. To help
- avoid this problem, CLAUDE tests the printer when you turn the printing option
- ON and beeps at you if it gets a not-ready signal. Check to see if the printer
- is busy, off-line, powered off, or is out of paper.
-
-
- THE /QUIET OPTION
-
- To disable CLAUDE's sound effects start it with a /q (or -q).
-
-
- THE /MONOCHROME AND /CHANGECOLOR OPTIONS
-
- If you use a laptop computer you may wish to force CLAUDE to use a
- black-and-white screen. You may do this by starting CLAUDE with the /m option.
-
- If you have a color monitor and dislike the colors CLAUDE uses you may start
- CLAUDE with the /c option. This brings up a screen that prompts you to select
- new colors for CLAUDE, by number. You will need to make six selections in all,
- for the foreground and background colors of the main screen, the menu and the
- help windows. If you mistakenly choose the same colors for both foreground and
- background, CLAUDE will beep and re-prompt you.
-
- If you start CLAUDE with both the /c and the /m option, CLAUDE will ignore the
- /c option. Also, if CLAUDE detects a monochrome monitor, it will ignore the /c
- option. I am not certain how this will affect users with both kinds of monitors
- on their machines, as I haven't been able to test this combination.
-
-
- PAYING FOR CLAUDE
-
- CLAUDE is shareware, which means you can try CLAUDE for free. If you like it
- you pay for it by sending me a registration fee. One month should be enough
- time to decide if you want CLAUDE. The registration fee is only $5.00 (US funds
- only). When CLAUDE is used inside a school building, it's free.
-
- Registered users can order a copy of the QuickBASIC 4.5 source code for CLAUDE.
- The package includes some minor documentation, as well. However, I wouldn't
- recommend this package to anyone who doesn't have an interest in QuickBASIC
- programming. The source code package costs an additional $5.00 (US funds only),
- not including your registration fee. I can put it on 5.25 or 3.5 inch DS-DD
- disks, if you tell me which you want.
-
- Registration payments or orders for source code should be sent to:

-
- CLAUDE'S FUTURE
-
- I have no plans to upgrade CLAUDE. If I hear about bugs (assuming I can squash
- them) I will release bug-fix versions. By the way, users can always write me
- with their comments about CLAUDE. I will enjoy reading them. I plan to release
- all my rights to CLAUDE and place it into the public domain, on Jan. 1, 1994.
